Family Builds 40×28 Shipping Container Home

This post contains affiliate links.

This is Brook, Ryan, and Soleil’s 40×28 shipping container home in Asheville, NC.

They’re a young family who, over the past year, bought and prepared their land, collected recycled materials, and built their first home using two shipping containers and a shed-style roof! It’s a 1,140 square foot house that was built for about $110,000 USD including land, mostly their own labor, and the help of friends. When you go inside, you’ll find a dining room, three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a full kitchen, living area, and plenty of storage space.

This appears to be well thought out. I am interested in how they handle their water supply, sewer or septic, electricity, gas supply…..

congratulations on getting a nice home for $100 a square foot

It appears that only the bedroom areas are shipping containers and the rest your normal wood construction. I bet that a good chunk of the square footage includes the slanted roof and the ledges they hold. Beautiful house and nice use of containers. Similar to how I would like to do it.

It looks great and is showing how to overcome the narrow shipping container.

“DHASED LINES DENOT” = DASHED LINES DENOTE”, and “FINISH AS PER OWNE” = “FINISH AS PER ONE.” Spelling counts, especially on architectural drawings.
    Nice build, though.

This one definitely has some wow factor! Love all the windows! One change I would suggest is to put the bathroom between the two bedrooms rather than having the bathroom door open up into the kitchen area. I might be tempted to make that master bedroom a couple of feet wider, sacrificing a bit of the dining area. Personally, I don’t need to have a loft so that staircase (shown in the floor plan) could be eliminated, too, providing more living space. Maybe even move the washer and dryer there. Think of the huge amount of kitchen counters and storage you could have, too! Or a back door to a deck area. My suggestions don’t mean that I don’t like this. It is fabulous but everyone likes to put their own touch that meets their own needs. Nice share.
