Woman’s Triple Axle Tumbleweed Tiny House

This post contains affiliate links.

When this woman wanted to find a better and more affordable housing solution she decided to go with a triple axle Tumbleweed Tiny House on Wheels built by The Shed Yard in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

It’s fully off-grid with solar panels and all and is 24′ long and 7.5′ wide to make room for road legal overhangs. The sleeping loft even features dormers to increase spaciousness inside.

Right now Ariel, the tiny home owner, is happily living in her house in the mountains of Wyoming with no plans of moving anytime soon. But if plans change, isn’t it pretty awesome that she can take her house with her? She named her tiny house Fy Nyth which, in Old English, means the nest. Isn’t that nice? Please enjoy, visit her blog for more info and re-share below. Thank you!

This is so cute and I love the stairs/drawers! Great floor plan. I also like the kitchen and great headroom in the loft. Well done.

I love this! Only thing I would change would be a more cozy/comfy sofa. ☆☆☆☆

I meant to comment on the sofa comment, not report it (which i did by mistake; sorry!!). I agree about the non-comfy sofa, and it seems to be a theme throughout tiny homes. 🙂

This is an excellent use of space and light! Curious how Ariel retrieves those books (I’m an avid reader). Also if she would consider a bit more color (accents such as on throw pillows, shams, towels…). The pine is beautiful and her design and choice of building materials is both practical (excepting the book shelf) and aesthetically appealing!

    • July 2, 2015, 8:23 pm

I’m 5’8” and I can reach all the books while standing flat on the floor. That wouldn’t work probably for someone much shorter than me though. I know lots of people would like more color and that’s totally fine, but it’s just not my thing so I doubt I will add any. I find very simple neutral color schemes the most relaxing.

I like your choice of trailer manufacturers,Tumbleweed is right on! I myself have plans for a 32’x98″x13′-6″,double 10′ lofts w/ all dormer on one side, and double dormers and gable in the middle on the other side.Totally off grid, and hopefully in large annual rainfall region. Three axle, like yourself with a four foot loft overhang (frt.porch)and a fold up 4′-6″ porch.Enough for now, comments welcome,Mike

I also find neutral color pallets more restful. I love the design of this home.
I would add two things, a bathtub and an office/desk area in the upper area opposite of the bed. You can sit on the floor.

Nice job. Did you purchase the table and if so where did you get it from? Please let me know. Thank you in advance.

    • July 2, 2015, 8:20 pm

My table is from Ikea. Look up Norden gateleg table. I love it.

    • Jaime
      July 2, 2015, 10:22 pm

According to the page on her blog, she got the table at Ikea – I’ve got one that’s very similar to it myself – it has two leaves (one on each side) that are supported by swing out gate legs. The version that I have only has one shallow (height wise) drawer, and instead of the three drawers, it houses four matching wooden folding chairs. It’s very convenient for a small space.

    • Varenikje
      July 18, 2015, 4:26 am

Anybody have a guess how many can sit at this table? The Ikea site says 4 but somehow it looks like it would hold more, especially if some were children.

      • Jaime
        July 18, 2015, 6:37 pm

The table can seat four very comfortably, six if you put people at the ends, and eight if some of those people are small, or you are all very chummy.

        • Varenikje
          July 18, 2015, 11:46 pm

Thanks for the info. Ikea isn’t too close to me so I have to guestimate. I am roughly in the middle of Nebraska.

We have that table in our small house in France and in our home in England. With both leaves up, we had 6 adults sitting at it for Chrustmas dinner one year! One leaf up sits 3 happily. I find the storage drawers really useful for cutlery, table cloths, sewing items and food! Here in England we have folding chairs that we store elsewhere. I use it with one flap up as a computer/work desk. It is solidly built and quite heavy to move around, though it won’t need to go far in a Tiny House 🙂

Nicely done. I really like that the cedar chest was put in the small loft. I have one that I don’t want to part with and this is a perfect place for it. The stairs are great too.

My only problem is that their was no bathroom, only an outhouse !! Other than that it was pretty nice. What was the Sq. Footage ?

    • Jaime
      July 3, 2015, 12:24 am

There IS a bathroom – it’s alongside the kitchen, opposite the range. There are pictures on her blog – it’s -extremely- compact, but a serviceable space. For my own part, it’d be too narrow – being of a larger than average frame, I need more than 24 inches width in a shower, but all these things are tradeoffs.

    • July 3, 2015, 1:16 am

The other commenter was correct. There is a bathroom though it is small. The outhouse did use to be an actually outhouse, about 50 years ago. It is now my garden/tool shed. The house is 229 square feet counting the lofts.

  • Jaime
    July 3, 2015, 12:39 am

Okay – I’ve just spent the past couple of hours prowling through Ariel’s blog on her tiny home – I must say at the start, that I am not generally a fan of the THoW… the eight foot width restriction makes them a bit cramped for those of us that have heavier frames. That said, this is one of two that were in the day’s newsletter that really -really- impressed me.

While the bathroom in this TH would be way too cramped for me, in every other respect, this is a truly superb piece of design – given that you can use a sleeping loft. I can, still, so that’s not a deal killer for me. I -love- the use of space here – there is nothing wasted. The kitchen is truly functional, and has lots of easily accessible storage, the staircase drawers are beautifully executed, and the inclusion of a large pantry is a huge selling point. Ariel and her builder should both be very proud of what they’ve achieved.

Further, Ariel’s blog is highly informative – on everything from her solar power rig to the composting toilet – and everything in between. It’s also very honest – nothing is sugar coated or glossed over – she’s very open about the good AND the bad aspects of the options that she’s chosen, and how they work for her. It’s obvious that she put a LOT of thought into this little dwelling, and she is reaping the rewards of that work.

Ariel, I salute you! It’s beautiful, and brilliant!

Thank you so much for sharing it with us.

(As a side note, do you ever post the recipes for the food that you post on your blog? That Rhubarb Custard Pie looked amazing. ^^;;)

    • July 3, 2015, 1:19 am

Thank you for all your kind remarks! I’m glad you enjoyed it. And yes, I happily share recipes, though often I don’t use them and just make things up out of my head. 😉 That pie is a family recipe of a friend however. I don’t think she’d mind if I share, but I’d like to check first. Feel free to email me and I’ll try to get it to you.

I was going to say, there’s that little Ikea table again!

Of all the Tumbleweed variations we’ve seen, I really like this one. The fixed storage ladder and partitioned-off loft are very sensible modifications.

I also like the kitchen layout – usually there’s only a teeny dorm fridge in these. Tucking the dish dryer into the corner space is quite practical too; I’ve seen some that put the burners or sink there, which seems hard to reach to me.

  • Maria
    July 3, 2015, 7:24 am

Now this one is just right for me. How much did this cost to build? The only thing I would change is I like the loft to be open with a rail.

  • Elizabeth
    July 3, 2015, 5:45 pm

I love the design, color scheme, partially closed-off loft, open porch, everything! Well thought out and executed, Ariel! My one question is about “where” you live…how did you secure the propert/land you live on and are there any concerns of being ordered to leave? Okay, so I have two questions :)…would love to know the colors used on the outside of the house? Paint or stain?

Thank you for sharing your home with us!

    • July 3, 2015, 6:29 pm

Thanks! I am able to live on this land in exchange for some care taking and cooking for the owners. I’m not too worried about it, but yes, there is a chance I could be forced out. If something falls apart between myself and the owners which does not seem likely at this point but is possible, or if someone else gets really nosy (the house really isn’t visible from anywhere unless you are already trespassing) and tries to make it a legal issue. Hopefully that never happens.

The outside color is a semi transparent acrylic wood stain. It was custom mixed to be a very dark grey. A lot of shots of black went into the can I know. Once on the wood, it looks lighter due to the transparency, and I suppose how light the wood underneath was before being stained..

  • Annie
    July 16, 2015, 2:25 am

Looks like a different location than the video tour. Hoping she was able to ditch the noisy generator and go completely solar. Sound polution in such a beautiful environment would be a deal breaker for me. Really like the new color on the exterior.

    • July 19, 2015, 10:51 pm

I have a more current video tour. You are right, my house has moved up the hill since this past winter. You can see it’s current location here. http://fynyth.blogspot.com/2015/03/realities-of-solar-power.html

Unfortunately unless I was a monster solar setup I will probably always need to use the generator as a backup in the winter. In the summer I do not need it at all. I just live too far north with little sun and a lot of snow in the winter which keeps me from being able to rely 100% on solar year round.

Love, love, love this tiny house! Beautifully done. Question: Is that a heater built into the wall at the base of the steps? Is there a danger of banging or burning your ankle as you ascend or descend the stairs? Great job!

    • September 9, 2015, 1:16 am

Thank you! Yes there is a heater at the base of the steps. I’ve never had a problem with banging into it at all though I suppose that would be possible. It’s not hot enough to burn you instantly like touching a hot burner on a stove would though.

I think it’s very nicely done. If it were my place I would have to sacrifice a little of the living room for wider extended stairs as I am 56 and climbing is an issue. I would also put in connecting recliners w/cup holders instead of the couch.

I love your stairs, where did you purchase them? I too am building a TH, 8ft wide 20 ft long, I am yet to finish and want to save as much space as possible, but want to have real stairs, at my age one has to think about that as one grows older. I did purchase my TH Trailer from Tumbleweed company.

    • September 9, 2015, 1:32 am

Tumbleweed built the stairs for me, but there are quite a few patterns out there if you are doing your own. I know others have done their own.

    Ariel,
I love your whole place. I love the light color of the wood. I also love how you can actually cook in your kitchen. I too love to make my meals & having a hot plate or microwave just doesn’t cut it for me. If you don’t mind my asking, what are the dimensions of the inside of your oven? I cook with all cast iron & I like to make my own pizza and everything from scratch & I’m curious if some of my current pieces would fit in the smaller oven size. The smaller size would obviously be the way to go & I’m currently trying to design the kitchen for my own tiny house build. I’m trying to plan everything around my way lifestyle because I couldn’t part with my Kitchenaid mixer or my continuous brew Kombucha.
The stairs are just wonderful. So much extra storage room & then the extra shelving for you books and such.
I plan to have my tiny house be off-grid as well. I know it does pose some challenges. I had though of adding a couple wind turbines to mine to help out in that department. Do you live in any area that is windy?
I’m so glad and thankful you have shared your tiny house with us. It has certainly been an inspiration for me.

Thank you! Sorry it took me a while to see this question. I don’t always check other people’s pages very often.

And did you see my kitchen aid and two gallons of kombucha? That’s funny, we must have similar cooking styles.

There can be some wind here, but I’m too tucked into the trees to get much right here at my house.

What a beautiful home, I love it all. Can you tell me if the table would be sturdy enough to use as a sewing machine table? My home is small although twice the size of yours but all on one level and I used to almost apologise to people about living in a park home as it was all we can afford but now I love it. We have learnt how to live harmoniously together in it and respect each other’s hobbies, even though my sewing area takes up a 1/3 of our L-shaped lounge. I have a very understanding husband! I live close to a small town in England UK and always wanted to live somewhere wilder and more remote but as we get older it makes more sense to be near amenities. Thank you for sharing your home.
