Woman’s Anthropologie Airstream Renovation

This post contains affiliate links.

If you’re an Airstream travel trailer lover like I am, I think you’ll really enjoy this renovation. It’s a story about a family of four who partnered with Anthropologie to transform an old Airstream trailer into a beautiful tiny home on wheels.

This little home has been named the Wandering Star. I think you might agree that you’ve never seen an Airstream that probably looks and feels like a cozy home more than this one. It’s just awesome, isn’t it?

Oh wait, you probably haven’t even seen it yet! Just wait until you see inside. I think you’ll be pretty amazed. Not only is it awesome, but it serves as a reminder that you can live tiny in a renovated travel trailer too! Especially if you desire to travel often. Remember, there are many ways to live tiny (and stick-built tiny homes on trailers aren’t the only way). So please enjoy the tour, visit Sarah Schneider, and re-share this with your other Airstream-loving friends below. 🙂

    W.O.W.!-!-!

First: “Way to Go, Alex!!!!” I see the new option, “Report This Comment!” Now, you don’t have to do all the Heavy Lifting around here and your faithful followers can come to your aid when rabid trolls invade your Kingdom. 😀
      ———————————————————————————-
Now, onto this beauty. It was too late last night for me to truly appreciate this but it’s now morning, I’m fueled with a proper cuppa and I have brain-wave activity going on.

This is SO charming! SO delightful! SO Bright, White, Effervescent and just plain LIVABLE!!!

Being that it’s partnered with Anthropologie, I’m sure that the photos are being used for marketing their wares, of which I feel is a brilliant move on the family’s part: get cool swag for showcasing your trailer. 😀 My own family did this back in the 60’s: we were offered by a builder to have our entire ranch house “done up” with aluminum siding, a true stone veneer on the front of the house, with a matching stone planter along the front staircase. It took all of about a minute for my Mum to say “YES!” to this deal: it meant photographs for the company brochure of Before & After and “Drive By’s” of prospective customers driving by the house to look at it. And it didn’t cost us one penny!

Aside from the utter brightness banishing ALL gloom, I loved the S.T.U.F.F. displayed throughout the home! This is NOT the home of someone with OCD, who literally counts their belongings with a maximum allowance of a certain number. It represents the HOMES that I hold dear to my heart, festooned with doodads and gee-haws and texture and dinnerware galore! THAT is my style of living!

Yes, you may actually need to “break into a sweat” to clean the interior but so what?!? That’s like pitching a fit when you have to bring a silk dress into the dry cleaners: Beauty Comes With A Price! I would much rather crank up the Classics on my speakers and take an extra half an hour to Hoover the rugs than to live in some of the bleaker examples of tiny homes I’ve seen pictured.

Simply a charming example of how you can have all your lovely belongings around you and still live Tiny. Bless them all. 😀

I would just like to say that I think it’s time Cahow was put on the payroll, because one of the reasons I visit this site is to read C’s comments. Depending on the tone, they make me laugh or cringe, and are always worth a read.

You do good work, too, Alex! 😀

About the “report this link”, I accidentally hit it on Alex’s thoughtful response to a little girl on another post. I tried to apologize in reply, but it wouldn’t let me. on my smart phone, the reply report…is extremely close. I adore this blog, however I’m often saddened by the negative comments on the name of considerate criticism 😉 that never appears very considerate. I am shocked by how freely people rip apart someone’s hard work. Yet I’m not the first to point this out, and Alex seems to always try to tactfully discourage it, but tact seems to fly over most of the negative commenters iq. My 3yr old and I live in a 1950s train car and I enjoy learning how others live tiny so thoughtfully on the blog. I really look forward to checking my email to see if the blog has arrived yet. Blessings to Alex and crew! Also appreciate the innovative hard working people sharing their brilliant designs with us!

Alex, is Mary’s house featured on the site? If not, I wonder if she’d send some photos…you’ve had a couple of streetcar homes that really interest me.

@liz n., I echo your comments about Cahow’s posts. Cahow, please come back. We miss you.

Now for the Airstream…I enjoy seeing what can be done with a travel trailer–and this one is eye-popping!

Beautifully done! I could easily live in that. I’ve often thought I’d like to buy a small travel trailer (smaller that this one), live in it and travel when the spirit moves me.

With the white walls and the color scheme, the trailer feels spacious and airy.

Years ago, I lived in a 32′ Spartan travel trailer with the gorgeous wood interior. It didn’t feel spacious because of the color of the wood, unlike this Airstream, but I loved it. With this light interior, I’d be in heaven.

Gorgeous! Of course I’d have it all muddy and disgraceful in no time. Light coloured interior furnishings and I have “issues”. I like this a lot more than the usual Airstream interiors.

I do live in one! My husband and I live in a 35 foot long long trailer! (if you saw the movie) If you didn’t see the movie it’s a Redman Blue Moon. I LOVE it. We still need to do some work inside, but it’s an awesome way to live.

Wow. I am gutting my camper tomorrow. No more excuses. It isn’t an Airstream but it doesn’t have to be Early American Hole in the Floor, either. Wow, that is gorgeous!.

That back bedroom with the twin beds- that is what I envision for the school bus I want to convert to a tiny house. What a lovely, serene, creative place!
    Thanks for sharing!

  • March 27, 2015, 11:58 pm

I own a 26 foot Holiday Rambler 1968 year. I have wondered about painting the dark wood inside. I got it to use for storage and find it is way to nice for that and want to use it but that year camper is not allowed in all the campgrounds I have found. My camper is in near perfect shape, all original and everything works. How do I prep the wood to paint it the nice clean white? Can you advise me what to use? Thanks. Judy in Northern Michigan

    • Criss
      March 30, 2015, 12:47 pm

Not allowed? That is an option?? Wow, learn something new every day.

      • gm coop
        March 31, 2015, 2:09 pm

Oh, yeah, not allowed! Some national parks, nothing over 30 ft due to small spaces from the 50’s. Some RV parks don’t allow removing the camper shell from truck bed. Some RV parks don’t allow any rigs older than, say, 1995. These rules might in place to head off FSTS (Fear of Shanty Town Syndrome)!

    Luv this trailer!
I was completely in awe of how well designed and thought out the

Will definitely remember this when I design my tiny house!
    Beautiful!!

I managed a RV parts store for years, and I also did repair work on site in every campground for a 100 mile radius. This is definitely the BEST Airstream trailer I have ever seen in my life ! I LOVE the bright color inside. I’ve lived in 2 different campers for about 4 years each, one being older with all darker wood paneling, and one brand new with light, bright wallboard. I was much happier in the bright one. This one is done so well, plenty of room, bright, airy, and comfortable looking ! LOVE IT !

I would Love to be able to do something similar for my self sadly right now money is just to tight.

The reason I would love to do one myself is back in high school I had the chance to try and restore a 1963 airstream with a friend we got as far as gutting the kitchen before she had family problems. We lost touch but I was left with a love of the brand to this day.

    March 28, 2015, 2:30 pm

Love, love, love this one! Light, bright, and cozy. What more can you ask for? The only thing I would change is the light bulb hanging over the table with the cord hanging in the way. I envision a small light fixture mounted on the ceiling with crystals hanging from it.

Luv tiny houses and as I have aged (an active 71 yrs.) I have Coe to appreciate small spaces in which to live. It gives u many lessons in what is truly necessary to own. You have done an awesome job in the interior design, all choices are so me. Luv it!

I have been liking Airstream or Avion travel trailers all the time.
They are easy to tow and less weight compared to the traditional style tiny homes on wheels. This restoration show how it could be done.
    Great job.

    Nicely done, comfortable

  • March 29, 2015, 6:11 pm

I love it! The shabby chic look is very pleasing and restful.

Makes me to redecorate my Park Model camper which I have lived in for 13 1/2 years.

So yes…I could live in this Airstream but my 2 cats would destroy all that beautiful fabric.

Thanks Alex for including campers in the world of tiny homes. 🙂

I would love to know the length, model and year of the Airstream! It is positively adorable!

It looks like someone popped into my airstream dreamin’ dream when I was asleep and made it a reality.

    Absolutely stunning.

I’m going to the Tiny House Jamboree in Colorado Springs in August to start building my tiny house, but the more I see airstreams, the more my heart flutters. Gahh! Decisions, decisions! I just want to roam in my very own home!

We have a 20′ travel trailer that I use on a daily basis as a spare room/quiet spot/tv room. We got it when we thought we were going to be homeless. Now that the economy is a mess, the “homeless” situation looms once again. Yes, I could live in a 20′ travel trailer. I love it, but an RV would be better.

I would absolutely love to live in that. It’s absolutely perfect for anyone, but especially for a person with challenged knees. Just enough space, distinct areas for living, dining, cooking & eating & sleeping plus the bathroom. The only thing that would make it even more perfect for me, would be laundry facilities.

I too think it’s somewhat busy in the design but it sure doesn’t overwhelm one. It’s got great colors and ideas and I especially love, love, love the sink made from an old bowl. I could easily live here!!

  • VJ
    May 27, 2015, 5:24 pm

It’s gorgeous! I would live in that in a second, and travel!
My husband fully restored an Airstream for an older couple, which he said was interesting, as all of the walls are curved (vertically and horizontally). It made fitting new cabinets, etc. a little more challenging. It too was beautiful when it was finished.
We hope to buy an old Airstream (inexpensively) and gut it and restore it, to travel around when we retire. (Although, my first love is really for the tiny Trillium and Boler trailers! However, as a retired couple, it would be so much easier to live in a roomier Airstream!)
Which brings me back to this lovely little jewel! The Wandering Star would be a cosy, warm and inviting little place to come home to! It’s beautiful!

I enjoy this blog so. Thank you Alex for bringing us a wide variety of tiny homes. I love the idea of the Air Stream but I too worry about its expense. I dream of owning a tiny home one day. My husband and I are both disabled so think it would be a stretch for both of us, BUT if one day it is just me, I’d do it. I’d have to have a tiny shed or some such for all my fabric lol. Wonderful place to dream. Thank you

Oh, how very pretty and feminine! Having a manly-man husband of nearly 50 years, and three manly-men sons – no daughters – I have developed a love of sleek contemporary design with which I am very comfortable, but every once in a while, something comes along that really calls out the girly-girl that I am who is buried deep inside somewhere. Boy, did this do it! I love it all! (OK, just where did that tear on my cheek come from, anyway?)

I presently live in a 26 foot trailer and love it. Hope to build a tiny house someday because of the better insulation. It would give me more options on where to live in Canada although I’ve been comfortable in my Citation during the winters here in BC. Would never live in a traditional house again! Love the remodel of the Airstream. One thing I would advise is to put in skylights in the roof. It makes such a difference in the brightness of the place. I’m lucky in that I have light woodwork but in the past, in darker trailers, I’ve painted the dark woodwork white. All you need to do is to clean the wood with TSP then use a good primer before you paint. It makes such a difference!

  • Dick
    April 24, 2016, 3:35 pm

Great remodel! I can imagine the purists gnashing their teeth right now; elsewhere on the site is a story of a bi-level mobile home for sale–there’s a post from a purist saying *never* remodel, you must RESTORE!!! Anthropologie did a wonderful job, even if it is a bit too “girly” for me. My wife would love it.

Now my question: I went from this article to the Wind River Homes redo of an Airstream. I saw the Dickinson marine heater there and wondered how this model is heated and cooled. I didn’t notice any heating or a/c units, and if you live in Oklahoma, as I do, you’ve got to have the a/c in summer (105 degrees, heat index at least 115). It also gets cold in the winter here. Not to mention tornadoes.

The state song says, “Oklahoma, where the wind comes sweeping down the plain…” They should add, “And never stops”.
