Jay Shafer’s 312 Sq. Ft. Tiny U-House Cabin

This post contains affiliate links.

If you haven’t seen Jay Shafer’s latest 312 sq. ft. tiny U-house cabin design that’s coming soon (it isn’t officially released yet) then you’ll get to preview it here right now.

This is a much larger tiny house relative to Shafer’s earlier designs that range from 65 to 200 sq. ft. but this one is geared towards the ‘average’ person since not many are cut out to live in 100 square feet.

So this new tiny cabin design has just enough space for all of your modern day needs. It includes a washer and dryer, full kitchen, full bathroom, large refrigerator, full-sized bed, dishwasher, dining space for 6, store space, and even an extra bed for guests

I think that is really nice. It seems to have everything I would want and need in a small house. It is well done.

Bwhahaaaaaa, Paul, on your comment regarding the combo of “Jay Schaeffer” and “S.T.A.I.R.S.” !!! lol I guess that phrase “If you build IT, they WILL come!” is proven true! Finally, a home for people that DON’T want to live in a Cook County Holding Cell for their home!!! Stairs, washer/drier, furniture that you don’t have to frickin’ fold down/hang up/adjust to use!!!! <(that feature wears out your soul very, very quickly, my friends! You try folding up a bed and chairs for 365 days and tell me how you like it!)

I still don't see the "U" formation, though. Huh.

I was figuring the U is abbreviation of You… yeah I looked too… couldn’t find it either.

        But….

If you go to the linked page and read down it says: The U-Coupler© component can also be added to connect U-house to virtually any other structure, including other U-houses, for infinite expansion and varied form.

Now, quite what that U coupler component actually is remains to be seen. Like the TV ads say, Wait… there’s more. : )

Looking at the pictures and sqft claimed it would have to be a 12×26 which would be too wide for a legal road limit and would require a wide load permit and would be considered a park model. Lots of park model designs out there. It also appears to have 10 foot sidewalls and that would put that peak way over the 13’6 allowed on highways. I went to the website to see dimensions but none given so I hope Jay will share the dimensions with us.

      also on the linked page:

      Nesting-Hinged-Roof©

U-house’s unique Nesting-Hinged-Roof© allows for the unprecedented transport of a relatively tall structure (over 16’ in this case) from one place to another without incident.

Now, quite what a nesting hinged roof is remains to be seen. Hope it doesn’t come complete with birds… ; )

My guess on the roof is that is somehow folds flat during transport, then is put into place with supports added once on site. My wife and I have been researching tiny houses for a few years now in preparation for moving into our own one day, and I have always wondered why they didn’t build homes like that so that the lofts could be high enough to stand up in. Or with some sort of second floor transported separately, then craned onto the first floor once on site.

Beautiful job, nice lay-out, but I dont see the”U”. Does the outside picture go with that interior. Is it like a TARDIS and the interior is larger than the exterior?

WOW This is very nice. Looks a little bigger than 312 Sq. Ft. to me.. and don’t see any adequate closet space here..I’d like to see what the floor plan looks likes. to maybe shoehorn in a closet somewhere..

It doesn’t show here, but the stairs have books on them. It’s a bookshelf staircase. I really like this! Go to Jay’s website and see it.

    Beautiful design
I think Jay is such a visionary, and has such a talent……..
So many tiny house manufacturers churning out anything and everything…..
Jay consistently produces quality, and efficient design and still maintains a design that encompasses beauty and comfort……..
    He can create it all.

I love this house Jay. What is the cost of the build including all parts and labor with kitchen appliances but no furniture?
