The Tree House Flat: A Clever, Small Home With An Ocean View

I recently stayed in a charming Airbnb rental that any tiny house fan would love – in part because it’s owned by a tiny house fan! The Tree House Flat is 850 square feet with an open layout and one bedroom.

The home revolves around the beautiful ocean view from the dining area and the deck.

Located in picturesque Oceanside, Oregon, the flat is a five minute stroll to a few restaurants and a dramatic beach.

The flat takes it “tree house” name from the fact that it is actually the second story of a two-story home. The host lives on the first floor, also an 850 square foot space, and separated the two units to offer the luxurious top floor as a vacation rental to couples and families who want to enjoy the ocean. I wasn’t at all surprised to see Lloyd Kahn’s Tiny Homes, Simple Shelter on the coffee table when I realized what a clever use of space was at work in the Tree House Flat. Not everyone can live in a “tiny home”, but there are opportunities all around us to use our space more wisely to save money and focus on what’s really important to us.

The listing has dreamy (and accurate!) photos already:

But the flat also has a couple cool touches that weren’t in the airbnb listing photos, including this clever use of space: adding a bar to hang clothing onto an attic ladder, which doubles as a handrail for the ladder.

And this great scale model of a true tree house!
