This 144 Sq. Ft. Toy Box Tiny House is a guest post by Frank Henderson – share yours!

This tiny house is a custom design. Using reclaimed materials and high quality fixtures, the motto of this build was “Downsize and Upgrade”.

There is a spacious sleeping loft (7’x8′) and all of the windows are new and operable. The double patio door offers tons of natural light, and the loft windows create a nice breeze using stack effect.

The house is not set up to go off grid, but can be hooked up to a solar powered system. We have installed a solar vent to keep constant air flow throughout the house.
The base of the house is surrounded by a planting trough in which flowers or succulents can be planted.

There is no toilet, because it was our thought process that a buyer might want something other than what we would provide. The house is plumbed in case you would want to add a water operating toilet (RV flushing toilet).

The trailer is a Tumbleweed, designed specifically for building tiny houses. It has working brakes and lights. Please enjoy, learn more and re-share below. Thank you!

The woodwork inside is very well done it looks like. And it has some good features. The outside color scheme sucks tho.

My first thought when seeing the outside colors, “The Partridge Family”. I am wondering when they were going to come out and perform their theme song.
I do like the inside, but I would like to have a little longer, and put the sink and mirror outside of the shower, if you need to shave or use a hair dryer, curling iron, or any other electric appliance, there would be a safety hazard. I would want a washer/dryer as well. You can put the sink on the opposite of the door. I wonder if you can put a slide up ceiling, or sides. RV’s employ them. Where is the ladder to get to the loft? I also want a stove, oven and microwave. Oh yes a closet, dresser. This stretched a bit longer, to accommodate the other things I would want. The outside I would just want one color and a different trim. I like the sectional seating in the living room that can be rearrange to a single bed for guests or taking a nap when you don’t feel like climbing up to the loft. Generally, I really like this. Maybe a retractable awning that goes over the sliding doors. Tinting and blinds in side the sliding glass doors. I have seen sliding glass doors with blinds inside of the glass. Also, tinting with a mirror effect for privacy, and keeping the ultraviolet and other dangerous rays out, while letting light in and also keeps it from getting to hot.

I really like it,, very nice layout. I’d just change the outside color . to just one color with a neutral trim..

Love this tiny house! The built-in bins for food storage are great. Finally-some color on the bathroom wall. Tired of the all wood or all white look on walls. Very pretty!

DItto! There’s nothing wrong with wood and white, but seriously, love to see and potentially incorporate OTHER COLORS, lol. As for the outside, it certainly calls attention to the buiding, (not lilely anyone will rob it while the population is staring at it) , but of course a quick coating of paint adapts it to whatever my current color scheme might be. AT LEAST its not wood or white, lol.

Like the clean lines in the kitchen area. In this case, less crown moldings etc….really is more. I would certainly enjoy using the shower. Brushing teeth in the shower is something I did years ago because I just wanted to do everything at once. I’m not in that kind of hurry any more. Just sayin’

I’m not a fan of modern furniture or architecture, but I really like this one. I love the dark and light wood treatment and the cubes for bed/sofa. I would just change the outdoor colors to be more muted. If I go off-grid I don’t want to stand out like a flashing light. Thanks, good job.ccc

This house is gorgeous! I love the loft area and the use of different woods in a sleek modern design. The bathroom is ingenious. The use of a stainless steel surface on the sink tqkes care of any worries over water from the shower. Soooo pretty, too! The kitchen table is prett, too, and looks very practical. Great job! Great tiny house!

Marsha, didn’t even notice any spelling goofs. My parrot says “you’re so prett” unless he really loves something. Then he says “you’re so prett-E”. I like this unit. It is so prett-E.

I like the wall cube in the kitchen with the storage containers in it and what looks like under-cube lighting for sink and counter.

Interesting layout. Curious that they say 2×4 closet in bathroom, which I couldnt find nor the toilet. From the photos none of that exists, but perhaps its the way the photos were taken.

In the article it says this: “There is no toilet, because it was our thought process that a buyer might want something other than what we would provide. The house is plumbed in case you would want to add a water operating toilet (RV flushing toilet).” I don’t know about the 2×4 closet in the bathroom.

I am absolutely obsessed with the food organizer in the kitchen!!! I am in the process trying to reorganize my kitchen, and as an avid cook I have to say one of my biggest challenges is to store and gain access to various ingredients. This organizer would be the perfect use of space, and is sleek and clean looking to boot. I wonder if it was purchased, and if so, where? I have never seen anything like it anywhere!! If it was handmade, I wonder if they have instructions and a source for the various compartments. For sure I am going to be dreaming about this-once I get my mind on a topic, I rarely let go!! If anyone has any information, I would greatly appreciate if you could let me know.

There were some things I liked about this tiny house, and things I didn’t like. The nooks for storage in the kitchen wall was a good idea, and the loft in this house was ample size. However, the living space looked more like a sterile office environment to me.

The kitchen is very cute. I like the awning windows on that wall. Nice height in the loft. Couldn’t see myself sitting in the living room more than 10 minutes tho! If you notice that there are two parallel shower curtain rods in the bathroom? I think the only place for the closet would be on the other side of the rod farthest from the door. And I believe the toilet would have to go right under that small square window on the pink wall.

Just curious…when the tiny house gets moved, do you have to pack up all the stuff on the shelves in the kitchen?

    • August 21, 2015, 6:02 pm

Yes, Sharee. While open shelves are lovely, any “open” storage space has to be secured in some way for transport, or all your lovely possessions will be strewn around the house. It is something to give careful thought to. On the other hand, “closed” storage, means that you will be opening and closing doors or drawers all the time, since most everything in a tiny house needs to be put away all the time. I have opted for a mix of open and closed in my Tumbleweed home, and simply employ some temporary method for restraining the contents of shelves.

I was thinking along the lines of bungee cords in front of each shelf. That might hold things in. I love the open shelves and have begun converting kitchen goods into see-thru containers.

I like the bathroom with sink/shower combo. I have been collecting photos for possibilities. I hope you don’t mind if I save a copy of yours.

        • August 21, 2015, 11:08 pm

Happy to share! I used bungee cords on shelves that had boxed stuff on them. Just a small eye bolt top and bottom with some cable clips in between. On others I have used molding strips or firring strips. You can power screw those with 3/4 inch screws zippity zip and when you’re done moving the holes hardly show!

I like your wet bathroom; very smart. I agree with your idea to not install a traditional, plumbed toilet. In my opinion, a simple cassette toilet is best for your house size and design.

I am retired and forget things easily so I don’t mind re-runs because I don’t always remember the first time I saw them.

Yeah, well, I’m retired too, and at 74 probably older than you. And my memory is excellent.

I too have seen this TH before and it’s definitely worth seeing again. The kitchen storage is not only creative and unique but beautiful. The storage system alone makes this one of the prettiest kitchens I’ve seen in a TH. I love the side by side fridge/freezer combo. The neutral color scheme inside is tasteful and balanced perfectly with the gorgeous multicolored woodwork so they complement each other very well.
I like the cubes in the living area. If not in the main living area these would be perfect for a small office/guest/reading space because it looks like you can stack them to the ceiling when not in use and do so w/o them being an eye-sore.
I really like the ‘color-block’ concept of the exterior. I agree, I’d go with a less-bold color scheme if I wanted to be discrete, but whoever put these colors together really knows what he or she is doing. I personally like this color combo. Individually the colors are well, icky, but in this combination and proportion they’re outstanding. What a lovely TH.

About the only thing that’s missing is an easy chair. It would be all right if you had a really good back.

Love the modern look, that built in bench looks damned uncomfortable for a back the age of mine, otherwise I’d make one like it.

Five stars for the small windows above the kitchen area. Privacy, with natural light from high. Good idea.

As a retired restaurant owner, I prefer plenty of powered exhaust over my cooking area… hmm…

I like the bunk bed area. The materials are easy to clean of the usual sleeping debris == dust and hair and shedded skin.

I like this. Very different and striking. I do like the exterior. Colors and way it is designed is real striking. Very creative. Has it’s own personality.
