Top 7 Futon Options for Tiny Houses and Other Small Spaces

When you’re getting ready to live in a tiny house or other kinds of small space you’ll probably end up wanting a futon.

This way when you have guests there’s somewhere for them to sit and/or sleep.

A futon is almost like having a sofa bed except that it’s less expensive and most of the time more comfortable.

In my friend Dan Louche’s first tiny house that he built for his mom, she used a futon as her couch during the day then converted it into a bed in the evening.

This allowed her living room to serve two functions with little effort since she didn’t want to be climbing up a sleeping loft to go to bed.

So here are what I consider to be the top 7 futons for tiny houses and other small spaces.

If you’re actually shopping for this right now, look carefully as you may have to purchase the mattress, cover, and frame separately.

I believe that the best place for a quality futon is a local dealer carrying a good brand of futon mattress ans frame. Metal frames do not hold up nearly as well as wood. An innerspring futon is most comfortable for sleeping (loft bed), where a cotton – foam layered mattress is best for a convertible couch – bed. Futon Don of fort worth Texas had the best futon by far, it was a 100% foam in full size. It was the best, period, but was more expensive and he discontinued it due to not enough sales.

I sold futons Retail and Wholesale from 1986 to 2004 when I sold my futon business.

    Hi Alex,
Wonder if you know of anyone making tiny houses for sensitive people..like MCS types, who are sensitive to
the usual building materials of homes today.
I know that someone has a business redoing Airstream trailers for folks who need special non-toxic materials when building something. I am in Wisconsin and don’t know of anyone to consult, locally, near Milwaukee.
    Thanks…love the photos and videos!

I make my own by using 1/2” plywood and make the base from plywood too for storage. The angles are important for comfort as is a good thick mattress

I haven’t found a good futon matttress yet as too thin and cheap filling. I get good thick foam and cover it with the material, design/color I want and thumbtack it into place to the ply.

Cheap, comfortable, flexible, space saving with storage. And you only need about 4.5′ high to sit in it so above can be storage, loft, etc.
