Tiny Purple Cottage in Portland

This post contains affiliate links.

This is a tiny cottage in Portland, Oregon with a fun, contemporary shape and feel.

You can’t help but notice the bright purple clapboards that encapsulate the house. A slanted, shed-style roof gives the home a unique roof line, and the large front windows provide plenty of natural light. The beautiful wooden deck gives you extra living space outdoors.

When you go inside, you’ll find knotty pine floors and ceilings with a large paneled accent wall in the living space. A bright blue sectional couch sits in the living room and the L-shaped kitchen lies in the opposite corner. It has open shelving for plates, dishes, and food as well as an oven, dishwasher, full fridge and freezer, and microwave. On the other side of the house is the bedroom with a queen bed and more sitting chairs. The bathroom even has a cool claw-foot tub where you can soak after a long day of travel and/or exploration!

This is not a Tiny Cottage, author!! It’s just a Cottage…

It’s one thing for Tiny House Talk to start featuring all things cute and adorable, it’s another to start calling all of them tiny!

Mike: While I agree with you whole-heartedly, this really is a great (just) cottage, not really SO tiny… I have to defend Alex because, in the great scheme of things, this IS a tiny house, when compared to the homes now-a-days that are 2,000 sq. ft. So, although not a TINY house, I personally like to also see these mid-size ‘tiny’ homes. It really IS still small, as opposed to some of the LARGE homes today (albeit, all that space of x-sq. ft. is normally probably not even USED by the family, as I’m sure you will agree) . So Alex does so many of us a service here, with GIVING tiny homes, yet also including LARGER tiny homes too! I don’t even know if he realizes that he gives a LOT of us great ideas here! Well, yeah, I guess he DOES, that’s the whole point of his blog. LOL! 😉 –gv

Thanks Gloria, I am aware that it’s small. Tiny has generally been accepted as less than 400 sq. ft. For a one bedroom, this is nothing special besides being purple..

I like it that they’re including the smalls as well as the tinies. Some of us would like just a little more space.

This place look HUGE to me. I think it’s too big to be called “tiny”. Also, is this on skids or on the ground? If it’s on the ground, then it’s a “foundation house” and not in the realm of homes that are above ground, like THOWs. I thought the whole idea was to take a SMALL space and get everything needed in to that small space by being clever and smart in the organization of that small space. This place has lavish amounts of space in comparison to, say, Jay Shaffer’s first THOW. This is nice, but I’d still prefer a well done THOW. Thanks anyways.

PS: As I look at the lot this house sits on, I’m seeing mental pictures of all of the THOW’s that could fit on this lot. I think this would have been a better use for this piece of land; a THOW mini community.

Wow Lisa… have you looked at the link bar at the top of the page?

There is a link for SMALL… click on that and you will find under it numerous categories including… (gosh) cottages.

If you don’t like things that are happening, such as this, you have 2 choices. 1 don’t come back (but that’d be cutting off your nose to spite your face… or 2, if you see cottage bypass it and look at the things that you do like. I’d say your best course of action would be the latter…

Arrogant people like you, Eric, really burn my toast! Who the Hades do you think you are to be going around telling people what to do and how to think and feel??? If you don’t like a post, then keep going and MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS and keep your MALE need to dominate to yourself!

People like you Eric are the problem with this blog. Lisa is directing her opinion towards the subject, you don’t mention anything about the subject.

I like this “TINY” cottage. I say “tiny” because to me it is tiny compared to others I’ve seen or been in. If one wants to call it small, go right ahead and call it small. If one wants to say it isn’t really special other than being a certain color, go right ahead. If one doesn’t like the design, layout, or furnishings, that is fine also. Each home also isn’t our own home. So we really have nothing to say about it overall. It’s not a popularity contest people. In the end, our opinions really shouldn’t matter to the owners. They paid for it and like it, not us. We all have our opinions and choices. Alex provides an excellent opportunity here for all of us. A simple bypass of a particular article that one may not like will do just fine. Feedback is one thing, but negativity and verbal bashing of one another is not acceptable behavior. In fact, if I were Alex, that sort of behavior might prompt me to remove those people from my mailing list.

Thank you Alex for providing these opportunities to all of us.
Thank you Natalie for sharing this wonderful “Tiny Cottage”.
Thank you to the owner’s of this home for allowing us a peek.

Everyone else, Have a great day!

Just who are you referring to in your passive aggressive comments Brian? Well, let me be clear… Your such an idiot Brain you don’t even make any sense!! If our opinions shouldn’t matter in the end, what’s the problem with voicing them? Last I heard…Brian it’s still a free country. A simple bypass of the comments by you Brain will save us all alot of grief since obviously you can’t handle free speech, or honest opinion. Your so inane Brian. you can’t even understand that nobody attacked the home, but only questioned it’s inclusion here. You don’t even take the time to mention what is so great about the house, or what isn’t, you attack the commenters who don’t like it and you call them out of line? Alex does have a nice blog, and just because some don’t love everything that is posted doesn’t mean we don’t appreciate it, our comments are an honest contribution to the blog, when on subject, which in this case they are. Whether you think they’re positive or negative is besides the point, nobody asked you to take interest in or reply to the comment section. And just in case you still don’t get it, I’m writing this because you attacked me, not because I’m trying to be a comment cop like you.

Yes it’s sad to see our American freedoms erode away due to overly sensitive unpatriotic people like you who believe that the only way to support is to voice no dissent. I guess the next time I want to comment I should consider passing it by Brian the Commissar.

By all means Brian, have a great day. Ignorance after all is bliss!

Hello Mike H! How are you today? I hope all is well.

I sincerely apologize that my comments directly offended You or anyone else for that matter. Yes, this is supposedly a free country, thus I posted a comment just like everyone else did. Only mine was making a statement about how dissatisfied some (to include You) were about the posting of this nice little home. I read many of these just like many others do. What I don’t understand is when people make negative comments about an article when a writer is simply trying to provide good information. I guess I am to believe that living simpler and positively is what “Tiny House Living” is all about. Requiring less, living more, and being a better person because of it. Perhaps I’m wrong, but that is what I see from it.

Was I indirectly commenting about what You had said? Well it seems that I have and I already apologized for that. That doesn’t take away from the fact that all of us (to include myself) have the right to post comments. My message, be it perceived rude or not, was intended to open the eyes of people so that they may not be so rude to the host (Alex) the next time. I guess my message wasn’t received as well as I’d hoped. Just a little side note here. At no time did I ever verbally bash You or anyone else. I certainly did not resort to name calling either. Nor did I question Your Patriotism.

I stand by my original post as well as this one. Again, I apologize to those that I have offended. Especially to you Alex. I did not think that my simple comment would create such a backlash on your post. I hope this post shows how people can right their wrongs and be civil towards one another. Even IF they are under attack.

    Good day to you all!

No, you Brian posted a comment about a comment. That is off topic in forum speak and as such that makes you a troll. The topic is the “tiny cottage” as the author wrote. Tiny Hose Talk though a very nice blog is not the sole authority for the tiny house movement. The tiny house movement has generally said that tiny is below 400 sq. ft. For a one bedroom though, that is not much of a feat. So right there Brian, your wrong twice!! Your wrong that this is “house” is tiny, your wrong to direct your comment to us in an attempt to police us and our valid opinion of this article. Then, you try to come off as being supportive of this blog when you haven’t even made a valid contribution to the subject of it. We don’t need you to “protect” the tiny movement, it’s not going anywhere. Furthermore, your trying to “paint” anyone that does not mouth full support for everything in this blog as anti-tiny. What you can’t understand is not my problem Brian but it’s obvious that there is alot here you don’t understand. Now, do you have something to say about the article, or are you just going to continue aiming your ignorance towards others who offend you fragile sensibilities?

Author, this Tiny cottage is not tiny. It’s not even someone’s minimal home, it’s a vacation rental. In fact it could be said that this is nothing more than an ad for Air BNB!. I’ve read some of your recent posts and they all read like ads. You actually do nothing more than describe the pictures as if we can’t see them. You add no information about square footage, costs, and construction, or personal story of the dwelling. Pointless articles like this are what’s going wrong with the Tiny movement.

I gotta ask, did Air BNB pay you to feature this property? Does Air BNB buy ads from Tiny House Talk?

      February 29, 2016, 12:22 pm

Author, I do have to take Mike’s side on this one. It does appear to be setup like an ad for Air BNB! I do however like certain design features to this. I do like how it is an all in one sort of feel to it. One neat little package. I’m sure my Wife would love the color. I like the counter space since I enjoy cooking. I’m sure we would both enjoy the fairly large deck. It seems very peaceful. Does it state anywhere what the square footage is? It would be nice to know. Especially if one would want to build something like this for their own home. Maybe it said somewhere and I didn’t see it.

      Mike H,

You’re right! I know absolutely nothing about this topic. There that settles that.

      Have a great day everyone!

Is this two tiny homes budded together to become one tiny house. I am asking because I found a great deal on two homes and want to connect the two. I’m open to ideas or comments

For those of you trying to qualify whether or not this fits the category “tiny” and you are so expert on all that it has to do with tiny, why not just enjoy the cuteness and accept the fact it is not an oversized lump of wood that people can’t even afford to furnish while too busy paying the huge mortgage. If it is on a foundation or a trailer, who cares, it is small, tiny in many ways, and absolutely adorable!

This L shaped house is almost exactly what I have envisoned as my retirement home. Although I like tiny houses they are not suitable for some of us due to disabilities. I can’t safely climb ladders so I need a BR and bath on the main level, and doorways wide enough to potentially allow the use of a wheelchair. I actually submitted a design that I created very similar to this one to a builder for a quote but never actually got one. My thought was to bump two tiny houses together. Is there anyway to get a drawn floor plan of this one.
