A happy new year to you and yours, Alex! I hope this is the year you make your own tiny house dreams come true. I’ve enjoyed many hours wandering through your site, gathering ideas and inspiration for my own small house journey, and it’s much appreciated. I’m on the verge of making an offer on land (next week, quick response, fingers crossed), and then the journey begins in earnest for me.

I’m single, not young, was laid off in 2008, struggled to make a living working from home when jobs withered on the vine, made paying off my debts a priority, and am finally in a place where I can own a (very) modest slice of the American dream. It’s been a long, challenging, and scary struggle, but for all your readers who have left comments expressing their longing and frustration, their fear that even the most humble dream of having a place they can call their own is out of their reach, I can promise them I was frequently convinced of the same thing, but fought my way to making it a reality…and if I can do it, starting with no job, no savings, no 401K, no money in the bank, and weeks from homelessness, then trust me – they can too.

Patience, perseverance, and positivism – they do get rewarded in time. Creativity and a willingness to face reality and accept some limitations, not to mention a sense of humor and a real talent for making a virtue of necessity, will help get you there, too! Best of all, a little faith in yourself and the One who loves you certainly make the dark days a little brighter.

Begin as you mean to go on! Make 2016 the year you take that risk, or begin the first step! Make a workable plan and knock out the obstacles one by one. Eventually you WILL find the path to your dream becoming clearer and less cluttered with doubt, fear, and stumbling blocks. And when you start the process of tiny or small home-ownership, well…you’ll have had plenty of practice at battling all of those things when a whole NEW path of doubts, fears, and stumbling blocks present themselves! (Since, alas, nothing in life is easy. But the rewards can be great!)

Deadrock, thank you for sharing your truly inspirational story. Fingers are crossed. Please keep us posted on what happens. I remember you were looking in the Asheville area. Is that where your “slice” will be?

Hey, thanks, MareM! I started out just wanting to wish Alex and Co. a happy new year, and then got carried away. 🙂

Yes, I spent a week in Asheville in late October/early November. It was tough to be gone from my business for a week, when I’m the only employee – but that’s what I meant by stuff often being challenging. You just do what you have to do to make what you want happen. Anyway, I spent every moment I could looking at raw land to find something I could love at a price I could afford, and actually managed to find 2, after 3 real estate agents I’d spoken to on the phone (and one who never returned a call) basically tried to discourage me from believing it would be possible. I’ve given up on real estate agents, and am going it on my own, with the help of a real estate attorney based in Asheville.

Property #1 went off the market just as I arrived in town, but I persevered anyway, sending them a certified letter of intent, to which they responded positively. However, they wanted to wait until after Christmas to deal with it, so I have been chomping at the bit for weeks, waiting until they could get their ducks in a row. One week after Christmas, however, they have failed to respond to my follow up emails, so Monday I make an offer on property #2. While I preferred the location of #1, the size, price and sheer beauty of #2 makes that a choice I’m sure I will be happy with – and hopefully the seller actually wants to sell it and we can both move on with our lives!

Once the land is in the bag, “all” that’s left is getting sewer and septic, a foundation, a house built, and move cross country. Piece o’ cake. Urgh. At least I have a contractor and a tiny house builder lined up and ready to work with me, so hopefully the rest of the process will be relatively straightforward. Not that I’m actually kidding myself about that.

Thanks for showing an interest! Hope your 2016 is epic.

Sounds like things are working out for you, hope it all goes well. 2016 is the year I finally get to build my shack, after saving out of my disability pension for almost 8 years. Thought I’d lose my marbles several times over, but at least I managed to get land paid for while I was still working. Plans are just about nailed down – basic structure definite, some inside stuff not but that’s easy enough to figure out on the fly. I’ll be slowly building most of it by myself, with a bit of help for heavier, awkward stuff. Though it’s amazing how much you can do on your own if you rig things right. This and several other blogs have been invaluable, if somewhat distracting. Every time I thought I had my plan solid I’d see another great idea that would set me off in another direction. Trying to anticipate what might drive you crazy later is kind of hard to do, but spending the 8 years part timing on my land in a 13′ Boler and in town in a 300 sq ft studio was very educational. Best of wishes to all in 2016. If you can’t build yet, at least start planning!

I remember you and I have the same affinity for container homes. Please tell me that’s what you plan to have built on your new property…and if you do, which company did you finally decide to do the work?

I too, NEED and want a SMALL home, not Tiny. Though there have been some really beautiful and creative Tiny homes on this site that have made me reconsider my Small home choice! Building UP keep the square footage at bay but I know from experience of taking care of my aging Grandparents that climbing up or going down ladders or stairs for that matter, will be impossible if I plan to build my forever home…so I need a SMALL home with a bit more square footage than a Tiny home would afford me.

BL: Still considering several styles for my small home. I plan to call this week and get some quotes on stuff – plans (I have a lot of faves saved on Housplans.com), cost to modify plans (most of the home plan websites offer this service), cost to have my own plans converted into blueprints suitable for construction (thinking of getting some software to create my own perfect floor plan), cost to finish out an interior if I end up just getting a kit (Noble Homes looks good, and I have a tiny home builder near Asheville who will build a 600sf timber frame for $17,500), and local labor costs for all the above (I have a contractor I’ve been in touch with who can hopefully give me some ballpark figures for stuff – including septic and well costs). One of the places I plan to call is Numen Development to see what they can do for me for container home building. I suspect they’ll be a little pricier than I’d like, but if anyone is interested in what they say I’ll pass along the info.

        January 4, 2016, 12:10 pm

Thanks for the well-wish! Things might go smoothly if I can only get people to respond to my calls and emails. I keep them to a minimum so no one starts thinking of me as a gigantic PITA, but then nobody else has the urgency to get this project done that I do. And I really, really, REALLY want to get out of the place I’m living right now as soon as I possibly can.

Hey deadrock, wish you well. I will soon share the 20x 24 accessible arched cabin on which we are getting closer to our CO. We are in wilkes, just a bit up the ridge from the pricier Asheville. I would love to speak with your timberframer.
. Next time we see the local building inspector, it will be for FINAL! meanwhile we are stuck in a motel room, feeling what it is like to be homeless, jobless, and watching mother nature siphon our savings. The continuous rain has put building 8 weeks behind. Hoping for several more dry days to get us in the door. Had to step away from desired interior finishes; we can do those later after we recover a bit.

Wow Alex…see what you started with this blog-site, people from all over sharing one thing, their visions for the TSHM (Tiny/Small Home Movement)!! Alex & the TinyHouseTalk Crew, Thanks for all the ideas and sharing so many tiny/small homeowners perspectives, experiences and finished homes!! Keep up the excellent work that you and the tinybousetalk crew create everyday!!

After reading the many posts and reading the experiences that Deadrock shared, once again I am inspired and motivated to downsize. I’m a looking way off but FATHER GOD works in ways that we at times cannot comprehend or even fathom, so with deep, earnest prayer I know that I will have my small house sooner than even I had anticipated!! Till then, I have to sell my 2 large storage units full of things so that I can begin a life of freedom from all the “stuff” + make come coins in the end!

Deadrock, THANK YOU for your inspiration…know that I am sitting on the edge of my seat this weekend waiting for an update on the land you plan to purchase! I’m excited!! I pray you will get land #2…based on what you said, YOU and your tiny home would be a perfect addition to the land (not the other way around)!

I have learned so much from this blog-site and come to see some of the regular posters on this site as my nieghbors in my web community!! Thanks for the exposure to the TSHM. Please keep up the good work TinyHouseTalk Team and keep us in the loop with your progress Deadrock!!

Make that your NY resolution, BrownLuster – get at least one of those storage facilities emptied! All those people who say they feel lighter and happier when they’ve offloaded “stuff” aren’t kidding. And the extra money gets you that bit closer to what you really want.

And how about considering using the money to buy up other people’s stuff, and make a profit with it on Amazon or eBay? Many, many folks are making a good living that way. Just a thought!

        January 1, 2016, 10:43 pm

        Thanks for your encouragement Deadrock!!

I finally started selling some things from my storage units on eBay this Summer and it has been quite an emotional process as one of the units has my Grandparents things in it. My Grandparents rasied me from a baby and they are no longer here with me. My Granddaddy passed away in 1991 and my Ma (Grandmother) passed away in 2011. As soon as I buried her, I went through a horrible time in probate court with a greedy relative & their unconscionable attorney. The whole process folded me over, took thousands $$ to fight. I was awarded the cash but the court gave my Grandparents big, beautiul house and the only house I’ve ever known to the greedy relative. The whole process took 3.5 years while I tried to deal with the grief of losing the only family I ever had. So with that said, ALL my Grandparent’s things & vintage furniture are in one of those huge storage units and is extremely emotional for me to even think of consolidating. At least for now…

Now the other unit is MY crap and earlier this Summer, I was motivated by this Tiny/Small Home Movement and jumped in and started the process of selling things on eBay. It’s been interesting to say the least. It’s actually invigorating to find creative ways to sell my STUFF besides just on eBay.

So being on TinyHouseTalk has been my constant motivation and has given me tips on HOW to deal with the STUFF and take ownership of my freedom, not the stuff! (Yay!) Deadrock, this blog-site and posters like you and many others that I’ve interacted with have been a blessing to my spirit and are STILL A HUGE MOTIVATION for me!!

Thanks My Friends On Tiny House Talk. I will make it through and finally be in the position to have that Small HOME that I’ve been planning for, for these past few years! Thank You for the inspiration!!!

I will say this too…IT’S AMAZING HOW MUCH STUFF I HAVE STRATEGICALLY PACKED INTO THAT DERN STORAGE UNIT!!

Deadrock, it’s overwhelming at times. Seems like the stuff is gonna swallowed me up when I walk in there. Lol

Thanks, everybody! Here I was, a little embarrassed thinking I just ran off at the fingertips, but comforted myself with the notion that nobody is probably reading this stuff on New Year’s day anyway. But a few good people are, and I appreciate your well-wishes!

I thought about starting a blog chronicling my experience through this process, but wasn’t sure if the truly TH crowd, with their DIY sensibilities and way off-the-grid hopes and dreams would have any interest in hearing about someone who ISN’T actually going tiny (more like 600-700 sf, hopefully, and there WILL be a flush toilet and room for lots of books), and who has no plans to do any of the work herself (1/3 because of the 2500 mile distance from the build site, 1/3 because of lack of construction skills, and 9/10 because of laziness). But if any of you out there are wondering how one goes about finding land, finding a builder, getting all the things done that need doing to get yourself out of a rental at one end of the country and into your dream location and a home of your own at the other, well, I might be able to give you some useful tips at the end of this journey.

Thanks, all! I appreciate your kind interest. See what a lovely community is building up around you, Alex?

2016 looks like it’s going to be a tiny house year for many people. After 2+ years of dreaming and planning, I am on my way also. After finally getting ready to part with the $4000 to have a trailer custom made in Oregon (I live in WA) I EAS perusing Craigslist and found an ad that had just been placed by a couple who had started their tiny home and ran into financial difficulties. Exterior is finished. Good roof. Stained and sealed. On a trailer. They live in my county. I drove out there, paid $5800 and it was mine! That’s $1800 over what just the trailer would have cost, so I felt like it was a good deal. They have built four other ones. My son-in-law is a home builder and will do all the inside work. So I’m feeling really blessed.

    Deadrock,

    • Deadrock
      January 4, 2016, 12:24 pm

Well, keeping a spreadsheet comes naturally to me, so I suppose I’ll have at least a really good ballpark idea of what this whole process costs me. I’m considering the blog idea, if only to help give Alex’s subscribers – many of whom ask about costs a lot – an idea of what to expect. Between trying to get land, sewer, septic, and a house built from across the country, and running a home-based business that is supposed to pay for it, I don’t have bunches of time, but I think it would be a fun project. I suspect it will end up helping me even more than it does anyone else who reads it, and in ways I can’t even imagine now. So if Alex is OK with it, I’ll shoot him a note if/when I get something set up, and maybe he’ll be kind enough to mention it? I won’t be trying to monetize this blog – it would just be an online “travel journal” giving a brief background of how I started and ended the path to my dream small home ownership, as well as the costs and setbacks and victories along the way. I might call it “From Nada to Nirvana” or something – hopefully something better than that! At the moment the creative juices are percolating, but no guarantees I’ll get anything down just yet.

I like watching these tiny homes come together but I think there is more to this show .
I really enjoy the fact of three young couples working and building their own business together . Something they obviously enjoy.
There is something to learn here about being independent , going your own way , doing what you like , pleasing customers and being proud of what you accomplish. These 6 are doing it.
I have worked for myself for almost 40 years . I enjoy the freedom of being independent , working at my own schedule and have many happy and repeat customers . I really never feel like I am working , it is my hobby.
Would love to see a tv show series about young people in their own business endevour .

    hi everyone,

Deadrock, I’d be interested in reading your blog. I’m also interested in building a small, not tiny, house. I’ve been obsessive in looking at designs, and think i would like between 400-800 square feet, depending upon the design.

What intrigued me about the house above were two features that make the home feel larger. One was the folding glass door, which is something i was interested in before seeing this. The other feature i like is the moveable interior bedroom wall. I saw a wonderful small home in Spain on YouTube with moveable walls that made the small space very functional. I hope we see more photos of the above house soon.

Holly, I totally get your obsession. I currently have exactly 99 websites bookmarked just for the good pictures, ideas and info they gave me. I’ve also gotten cost quotes, dimensions, and filled out countless “Tell us more about your project” forms. Downloaded brochures and floorplans. Even created my own floorplan on a free online design website. Thank goodness I actually like to research stuff, or I’d still be on sites like this one endlessly asking “What’s it cost to build this?” or “Where’d you get that stove?” or “You deliver?” or “What’s a link?” or “Does anybody now anybody in the Podunk, MS area can build me a tiny house? I’m a disabeled vet retireing on $230 a month and me an muh 17 dogs need a place an I wooden be asking exept [insert sob story about how the world has mistreated the commenter cruelly ever since birth]…”

Holly – assuming you’re joking cuz you knew *I* was joking…just imitating the kind of comment I’ve seen so many lazy people make on sites like this. Usually they are the kind of people who haven’t gotten very far in life because they didn’t want to do anything for themselves that they had the remotest hope they could get someone else to do for them if they just ask enough times. You could sit them down in front of a computer monitor that had nothing on it but a big button that says “CLICK ME!” and they’d ask you what they’re supposed to do next.

Oh, Deadrock, I am so disappointed for you. (I’ve been checking this post frequently to see if you’d heard.) Try to hold on to the thought that something even better will come along, may it be soon, and may it be in Western NC. My husband and I live in Hendersonville, and we love this area. So when you are speaking at a TH/small house event at the Ag Center, I can come listen.;)

Regarding your potential blog, I join the others in encouraging you to pursue this. In addition to your excellent ideas, questions and comments, you have a really enjoyable writing style. I actually look for your posts here. Substance and fun! Also, with all your accumulated knowledge, and with the wealth of experience you WILL gain WHEN building your small home, I think you should consider writing a book. I promise I will buy it!

So, while you are grieving for losing this land, I hope you will feel all the positive energy people have for you.

Alex, thank you so much for providing this forum. Keep on keeping on.

      • Deadrock
        January 4, 2016, 11:58 pm

MareM, I’ve been trying to be stoic, but your comment and kind words sent me over the edge. I’m talkin’ sob city, sister.

I’ve visited Asheville twice, and each time I stayed in Hendersonville. I really liked it…wished I’d tried harder for a rental property I’d seen there last year on my first visit. There is a super Ingles I would always shop at that I swear contributed 50% to my decision to move to the area!

I’m afraid I’ve been bitten by the Asheville bug, and to respond to susan’s comment, yes, it has to be Asheville…or at least within a 20 minute drive of downtown. I found myself accidentally, unexpectedly, and unpreparedly thrust into a very small town here in Northern California, and the shock hasn’t worn off in 16 months. Even Asheville is a bit too small, but it has a lot to make up for its modest size. Anything smaller and I know I will be suicidal within weeks. I am not, nor have I ever been, a member of the small town party. I live in a small cottage in an alpine forest, surrounded by lakes, at the foot of an active, snow covered, 14,000 plus foot volcano, visited by deer and bear and bunnies and all kinds of wildlife – basically I live on the set of a Disney flick – and all this beauty doesn’t even begin to make up for the urban losses I’m suffering from. We all have to find our perfect spot, that place we hang our hat and leave our heart, and for me it will simply never be the remote wilderness. I am aching to get out.

So I guess I keep trying to find someone in Asheville (or Weaverville, in this case) who isn’t advertising land for sale that doesn’t actually want to sell it. I know you’re not supposed to get attached to a property before the deal is done, but what can I say? I fell, and I fell hard, and I landed with a splat. I built a house and decorated it in my head, and landscaped the beautiful wooded grounds, and imagined growing old there, and even had dreams about it when I went to sleep. Lesson one for my new blog, if it ever gets off the ground…don’t get emotionally involved. Twice I’ve made an offer, and twice the owners said “sure, we wanna sell!” And twice they’ve come back and said “yeah, no…we’ve changed our minds.”

Deadrock: I have no idea if Asheville has to be the area or if you would consider other areas. I live in Western NC also, but at the southwest end (Murphy area) altho go frequently to Asheville. Cheaper here to live, tons of property available and much more eclectic and creative than meets the eye. I am also thinking about building in the 600-700 foot range since I do not need current amount of space I am in. Also live in a “nature area” where giant houses not allowed and can’t just go cutting down trees. There are designers/builders here who are very creative with space. Look up Richard MacCrea Murphy, NC. Altho many of the houses on his site are bigger than 600 sq. ft., he lives tiny, has done houses of various sizes and would love doing a project like yours. He designed my current house and if I do build smaller, I am having him design it (along with LOTS of input from me, of course). Don’t give up altho I know how disappointing it can be to have that “starting over.” Oh, and here we have lots of ways of drowning sorrows without alcohol or drugs (altho have that too).

susan, thx for the suggestion and referral! I was (mostly) kidding about the destructive behavior…I’m just really sad at the moment. I’ve seen pix of Murphy, and I’m glad you love it there, but no more small town living for me, I’m afraid! Heck, if I really DID want to drown my sorrows, around here there’s only one bar anyway, and the only pleasure it probably affords is the being tossed out of it. And Murphy is even smaller than Mount Shasta.

Heads up be strong Deadrock, God doesn’t close all the doors without opening a window somewhere. Just stay open to what HE has planned as to where you should be and ask HIM to show you. I’m praying for you and I’m sure your other co THOW lovers are praying for you as well. I’m sorry for your loss, yet look forward to the blessing to come in it’s place! God bless you and keep you throughout 2016. Happy trails! Thanks Alex for sharing Deadrocks journey with us as well.

Thanks, Glema! I DO ask, but I must have cloth ears where God’s concerned – nothing has ever come through very clearly. Also I’m aware that with him “a day is like a thousand years” and frankly – I don’t have that long. No angel is coming to let me out of this particular prison; I’m going to have to dig my way out with a spoon. But thanks for your prayers – from your lips to God’s ears, please!

Enjoyed reading all the comments. I already live in a 26 foot trailer and am looking foward to building a THOW. Have lived in my place for more than 10 years withb 2 dogs, a bird and 2 cats. Want to build a THOW with more insulation so I have more options on where to live since I’m from Canada. I love the idea that I can move anywhere especially if I’m not enthralled with where I’m at now. It’s the best lifestyle. Have been in big houses before and couldn’t wait to be back in my small place and have the freedom to choose where to live and the excitement of learning about new places. My kids think I’m nuts but it’s the only life for me! Hope things work out for all of you this year and that I can join you as a member of the community of THOWs. I’m finally free of the unending housework that comes with living in big houses!!!
