Tiny House Family Looking for Land near Asheville, NC

Lisa over at the Bumble Shack sent me some exciting news today I wanted to share with you. And heck, you might even be able to help. Either way it’s fun and interesting because they’ve recently bought a tiny house on wheels from Joe Everson at Tiny Happy Homes and they’re moving in really soon.

Right now they’re living in a normal house in Florida but they’ve already had their tiny home for a while. Her husband, Jon, has already found the perfect job and he’s to be in Asheville in only six weeks. So this tiny house family is in need of a space to park and live in their beautiful little home.

“That means all of this stuff in our big house has to go NOW! We have 6 weeks to get it done. SIX WEEKS, holy cow. And, even more important than immediately downsizing, we need to find a place to park the tiny house for about 6 months while we get more familiar with the area and find land to buy. We’d like to move onto our land in the warmer weather of the Spring.

So if you have some land, or maybe an organic farm, or a large backyard within an hour or less of Asheville, NC and would like to rent a small portion of it out for some extra income for approximately six months (end of October through April), please contact us!

We are a super nice, quiet, private, environmentally friendly family of four – hubby, our two daughters (12 1/2 and 2 1/2 years old), our calm, sweet, older Golden Retriever/Newfoundland mix and me. We also have two indoor cats, but you will never see them! Hubby is a software engineer who works Monday through Friday, and I am an artist, wildlife biologist, amateur organic gardener and work from home Mom. Our mornings will be spent homeschooling, and our afternoons will be spent driving into town for dance lessons, delivering to art galleries and such. We will rarely, if ever, have guests over. You can find more information about us on this page.

The Bumbleshack is an 8×20 tiny house on wheels. It is finished with dark stained cedar siding, has a red metal roof, lots of windows, and frankly, is downright adorable. It would make a great addition to any farm, yard or neighborhood. We plan to hide the trailer portion with latticework and potted plants. There is a more detailed description of the house on this page, and you can find more photos of it in our Photo Gallery. The interior decor is not quite finished yet. We just bought it from Tennessee Tiny Homes, an RVIA certified builder, a couple of months ago.

What we need:

  • Level spot to park, minimum size of 10 x 24 feet
  • Outdoor water hose hookup for fresh water – we have our own hose
  • Standard 110 volt extension cord hookup to power the tiny house (from the main house or existing utilities) – we have our own extension cord
  • A place nearby to dump greywater – we use all natural and organic soaps and shampoos, so it could be used to water landscaping
  • WiFi internet – we can acquire our own internet if needed
  • We have a composting toilet, so no sewage is necessary, and we do not need cable or satellite.

What we can offer:

  • Monthly rent – we are open to suggestions on the amount
  • Payment for electric, water and internet usage, which could be included in the rent if preferred
  • If you have an organic farm, I would love to volunteer to help out in exchange for knowledge, experience and possibly a share of veggies! About 10 hours a week would be perfect.

Have something that might work for us? Contact us! And please share our page with others!

Thanks!

I wish them good luck in finding a parking place! I am wondering though, seeing the house on the site, I cant see how they are going to fit a family of four and 3 pets into that house. that loft has no dormers. it looks like it would be quite cramped with two people.

Thanks SC. Definitely an interesting situation, right? I think they’ll do well. They’re wonderful people (I got to meet them not long ago)

I believe the family of four are doing fine. They seems to know what they have to do and they don’t seem to have all the pressures. I hope to meet them someday.

I didn’t see any closet space in there. I wonder where they will hang their clothes. Four people and their dog . Sounds like a very tight squeeze. Good luck to them.. Hope they’ll give us more feed back after a few months . and lets us know how they are coping..and what new ideas they may have created to manage their way of living..

Thanks Dominick. Well right now they’re kind of on the move but I’m sure they’ll keep us all updated as well as their blog (http://thebumbleshack.com/) so stay tuned 😀

There is plenty of room in the house for a family of four, especially if they are all bought into living simply and spend time doing and being rather owning. They seem like a close family and probably will have much involvement in community things, church, friends, etc., all things done outside the home for the most part. Asheville is a multicultural area with something going on all the time. I was under the impression that there were a lot of really nice RV and mobile home parks in the area, and that most of them were open to tiny houses. Might want to check that out first, but also Asheville has an atmosphere of creativity and trying new things, so many people are open to new ideas, like housing someone in their back yard. You shouldn’t have too much trouble finding a spot, but you need to look locally at their newspapers, inquire at their little shops, talk to the lady at the Chamber of Commerce, visit a church or two, and ask around at the local market, etc. Drive it downtown and park it somewhere, and you will probably meet lots of people who will come up and want to see it and know somebody who knows somebody who can help you. It is a community involvement kind of town, so take advantage of the generosity and knowledge of the locals.

By the way, Joe is my favorite builder in the eastern part of these United States. This house, like all of his, is exquisite! Enjoy, little family!

Great suggestions here Marsha, definitely sounds like a great way to go about it. And I love and agree with your simple living lifestyle philosophy. They’re going to do great!

        Alex,
Do you know if they have community to help build a tiny house for the family of 3? If so, how does it work? Im interested in Tiny house or anything that is simple to build and live a reasonable simple life style. I grew up in the country all my life and prefer to live in the country.

aw….thank you Marsha for all the information about this community of the Asheville . I had my eyes set on this town for a while as Im looking into moving out of the North to the South. I am interested in growing a small organic garden if possible all year round to feed my family. I would love to be out there helping the community. I love new ideas and meeting real nice out going people and lay back too. Thank you for all the information. Jackie

Dance Lessons? Country I’m guessing. To bad I’m currently in Calif. I could teach you two how to two step and a list of other fun country dances. Alas I’m not gonna be back that way till April myself and by then I’ll be pulling my own tiny haven. Good luck finding a winter haven. I hope you find a place that has a well.

If only we could get the laws changed on Tiny Houses…. I have a grandson who would like to build one on my son’s land, but local codes won’t allow it. They are on a private road with about 25 acres of land around them, nothing to interfere with anyone else. But, it’s a no go! What can we do to change these laws? I am 73 and about ready to give up my home for a smaller place, but where would I put it? Not everyone wants to live in a trailer park, nor a campground. What’s the solution? You can tell by looking at the photo, that this is a very nice family! ‘Wish I could help them!

Wow, that is sad. Why not as they have others? Hopefully, the law will change as its getting popular. Maybe have all the people get together and sign the petition to add the Tiny houses put on the land. What else can be put on the land?

I have no idea if this family has found anything yet. I live outside of Murphy, NC (“close” to Asheville??- well, I guess it depends…..). But I wonder if I have something here that would work out. Live in a nature oriented community, altho I am the only house here (2007-8 economic thing wrecked a lot of plans). It is in the mountains/abuts national forest. Probably enough of a level spot (own the “lot” next door). Feel free to email me at [email protected].

I wrote a comment earlier (but think I forgot to hit submit- so hopefully it won’t show up twice). I don’t know if something has been found or not. I live further from Asheville than the stated desire (2-3 hrs), but live in a “nature” community (I am the only house at this time). I have the lot next door. Probably enough flat space. In the mountains/abuts Nantahala natl. forest. I can also think of another possible option closer to Asheville (a friend). If you have any interest in more information (and v.v), feel free to contact me. You can see some pictures: http://www.mountainhomeshow.com/mypagenewhomeQ.htm (if it opens up). It is not a “tiny house” but is smaller than average.
