I figured I’d give you as many tips that I could think of to help meet other people who will most likely be interested in living small as well. So here they are:

This is actually a really great idea. Lots of people tell me that they would be interested in tiny living but their girlfriend/boyfriend think they are nuts. It does take two people who are genuinely interested in going small to be able to handle life in such a small space together. I speak from experience. Matt and I have been together a very long time and we were both on board with this idea from the start. If you’re not both into it you may have to pick either the person or the house. But if you can find someone who is you really do have the best of both worlds!

Just use the free site: okcupid.com and add the keywords in your profile so others can search for you. As for me, I’m looking for an RV/yurt/tiny house kinda gal who’s a little adhd. Hmmm… Although my strategy hasn’t worked at finding a tiny house partner, I have found like minded souls who appreciate my quirks. 😉

I think Laura put it beautifully. I’m a single girl who is 100% behind the tiny house movement. And I know where and how you want to live plays a huge role in a relationship. When I saw your blog headline I thought, “Yes, why hasn’t this been mentioned before!”, and better yet why doesn’t something like this already exist. I know my future will be in a small house, so it would be nice to find someone who already thinks along those lines.

That’s a great idea! Maybe dates or events that involve visiting community gardens, local organic farms, etc?

Hello, I am very interested in organic farming. I have a small Farm in Lincolnton Ga. where I am wanting to start a Tiny House Community and
Workshop. I have a passion to share with people how to live Healthy and live simple. If you know of others that has the same passion please send me a email. Thanks!!!

Skip! I can’t believe there is actually someone near me who is interested in this kind of thing! I live nearby in McCormick, SC. My mom has been having health problems, so I’m living with my folks to help out, but I’ve been toying with the idea of building a tiny house in back just for my own space. I’ve also been wanting to learn more about organic farming to save money. So feel free to email me if you don’t mind sharing your knowledge.

I think it’s a great idea. I live in a boat in Baltimore and when I go on dates, the question of where do I live always comes up. Some girls think I’m kidding, others think I’m crazy. None if them seem interested in the idea of living with me on a boat.
Tiny house dating would take out the work of presenting the benefits out small living to someone with a mansion of a dream home in mind. Meeting people who share in personal ideals is key to building a deeper relationship.

    Sign me up for it!

    Ha!

I still remember when I brought a lady I was dating to see my cabin the first time and she couldn’t believe anyone lived in such a small place.

After awhile of staying with me she changed her mind as she found the freedom that living small without any bills brings.

If people judge you for the size of your house then are they really people you would want to be with any way ?

I meet lots of people and date women that have common interests like homesteading, gardening, outdoor adventure, photography, raising animals etc.

If they don’t want to live with me in my tiny cabin that is fine as long as they don’t expect me to change I won’t expect them to and my current girlfriend has her own place and job in town and we get together when we can. It works for us!

I worked it the carnival business for many years and have lives in small campers and travel trailers for extended periods.

I lived in a small camper with an over the cab sleeper that slide into the bed of a pickup, it was self contained and slept 4. I lived in it full time for 5yrs.

I ran across tiny housing by accident but the idea had immediate appeal, after living in that camper I feel anything much bigger that 7’x 12′ for one person is a waste and am currently living in a place with a roommate that is 15’x 35′ that is just too big. My roommate feels the same.

    I’m currently designing something a bit smaller… maybe 12’x 20′ as a permanent structure.

Suggestion: Bookworms — especially the kind of person who would love e-readers (I’d love to learn about these) and/or the local public library. With the e-reader, you have your books in a small space; and with a library card, you have access to the world without having to drag all those books around.

FYI: ALEX, I’m having trouble accessing the last link on this week’s newsletter list. I wasn’t sure how to let you know. Thanks!

I fought the planning department in Ashland, Oregon about a tiny house; they won. Now have property in No. California where I can build a “shed”. Would love a dating site of like minded so I might find a partner interested in building it together.

    • October 22, 2013, 5:43 pm

Hi Barbara, I built a Tiny House down here in S. California where zoning laws are a nightmare. Needless to say, I too, purchased a small lot in N.California where I hope to relocate the Tiny House to, eventually. By “shed”, you probably mean not more than 200 sq. ft? One could could make a cozy 200 sq. ft “shed” if you can get around the “no elect. and no plumbing” issue. Anyway, we may soon be neighbors and would love to help out. Just a thought. Darryl.

        October 22, 2013, 7:46 pm

Hi Barbara and Darryl, and anyone else out there that would love to meet others that do the tiny house thing! I am seeing some of these replies are from last year and some are from this year. What has happened with a forum site for Tiny House people?
I bought some land in AZ and and am having several buildings to make a “home” with Tiny Houses, though I get a little confused about “Tiny” To me tiny is 200 sq ft or less, yet some of the Tiny houses I see are 300 and 400 sq ft.
Anyway, let’s do a yahoo group, I am going to leave now and find out if someone has already made one, if not, then I will name it…Tiny House Village…please everyone come and join up, we can use it to keep in touch with other Tiny House Dwellers, for dating, for whatever! So look for Tiny House Village at yahoo groups!
Looking forward to meeting you all!

Hi there Trisha. Yes, I looked for your Yahoo group but couldn’t find it. Sounds like it would be be a blast, though. Let us know when you get it up and running, I look forward to it. Darryl.

Currently living in rural remote N. Cal near the Klamath river = where are you? Wishing you every success with this venture. If you build on a trailer frame will that get you past the codes?

        October 23, 2013, 5:31 pm

        Hi Judi,
Are you near Alturas by any chance? I started to buy land up there but it just didn’t work out for me. If I could find land for low down, low mo payments I would get some and be a snow bird, living there in the summer and here in the dessert–Mohave County, AZ in the winter. Or would you or anyone be interested in starting a couple of tiny House communities? There is enough acreage here to start one. My land is 2.35 acres, and for snow birding situation it is large enough for 3-4 people not crowding each other and if they use only Rv’s or Tiny House. There I would want to have a summer place for sure!
Get in touch with me [email protected]
Even if you are not interested in a desert home (though there are some pretty nice mountains close by, making a really nice view) I would like to know if there is anything up your way.
I know someone up near you–not a tiny house dweller, that comes here in the winter. I never thought to ask him, but when he comes in Nov I will.
I have tried to open a yahoo group as tiny village and it won’t work….I will try a different name and see if that does, then I will post here the result.
        Thanks for your reply.

Hi Judi, I looked at property up that way, too a few months back. My piece of property is in Clear Lake, Lake County. No, building on a trailer does not get one passed codes. In fact, there is a whole other set of codes for any habitable structure on wheels. This also varies greatly from area to area, too. It’s all about zoning.
        Darryl.

        • October 23, 2013, 6:26 pm

          Hi Darryl, Judi and Everyone.
I had to go to firefox to get the group set up, but it finally worked with a different name. It turned into
United Tiny House Dwellers Here is the subscribe address
          [email protected]

Maybe/hopefully that will fit better in the end. If all Tiny House dwellers would unite maybe we could get these dratted building codes changed!
More thoughts, experiences and stuff over there! By the way, Thanks Alex for letting us get good kick off from your site here. I for sure will refer people here and will be a regular visitor!
Ok, hope to see you all over at United Tiny House Dwellers!

Hi…this was great to see on the site. I wrote to you some time ago, asking how I could meet a guy who wants to build a tiny house or cabin together…tougher for me since I am a 69 year old widow who still has energy to burn and would love to meet up with a “true grit” kind of man! I think a tiny house dating site would be adorable. Our small dwellings are so ingrained into our lives that I can imagine easily two people on a date pulling out their wallets and – instead of pictures of the kids – showing off pictures of their tiny houses. More so, I like to see a general social networking site for tiny house enthusiasts. Perhaps instead of Facebook, we could have Tinybook?

Tiny houses were love at first sight for me! I think to my self “Surely there is someone out there who would love the idea just as much as I do, but how do I find them?” I even thought about buying a shirt that says “I Live In A Tiny House”, and wander around until someone strikes up a conversation about them (not really though). A 200 sq. ft. tiny house can be just as lonely as 5000 sq. ft. mansion. A dating site for “Tiny House Lovers” would be a wonderful idea, maybe it will become a reality soon enough.

Why limit it to just dating?
How much fun would it be to have a tiny house village convention???
    Talk about bringing about change…
Can you just picture it? A whole bunch of Tiny Houses being towed into a State Park, every one doing pot luck suppers around a central fire (circle the wagons style) Oh boy, it’s hell to get old, these late nights when I can’t sleep, my mind just wanders off without me…
My plan is to travel until I find a neighborhood that I like and can afford to park in for a while… maybe a tiny house, maybe a converted school bus.

  • October 21, 2013, 10:41 pm

Alan from Maine here. I’m building my tiny house now and think this is a great idea.

It does get cold in the winter up here and having someone to snuggle with in my tiny house is important….

Although, bringing a date to diner at my house (tiny) would be quite amusing…. It’s probably wouldn’t be for long… (visions of my date walking back to her car before diner….)

You pretty much already have all you need to start such a site; you would need to allow people access to each other’s e-mail addresses, participants would have to give permission for you to give that info out. Beyond that, you know the traditional place for new ideas to get circulated is at colleges. I could easily picture a McMansion owner, placing an ad on the student housing bulletin board, to help out with the mortgage payment. They could either convert a garden shed to this new use, purpose build a new structure, or allow students to put one up in the backyard. I know a couple of people who’ve built ”illegal suites” in their basements for the same purpose….not much different in size or philosophy, and far less invasive of the home-owner’s personal space.

“Tiny House Lovers” …Lovers ! Think of the bumper stickers and T-shirts!
Like minded people getting together for fun, laughs and maybe a love connection. This is a great idea.
I am looking to retire and my tiny house plans are on the drawing table. It would be nice to have a partner that is interested in green living. I can split wood, can food, bake bread. I made my own rain barrels for my organic garden and I grow shiitake mushrooms. Raise chickens too.
I live in N. E. Ohio it gets kinda cold here. How would insulate that tiny cabin?
    Can I use wool?
I loved all of the above ideas.
And Thanks Alex, for the great site !

I think that there should be a network of people that have common interest in living “Tiny”. I have many questions about things and options in my area. But, if people in Connecticut have a Tiny house tucked away somewhere’s in this state, I would imagine that they would want to keep it secret and for good reason. I also would like to look into creating a building co-op, where we could have a network of people to trade services and material, in order to support eachother in obtaining our unified dream of living tiny !

Frank, me too! If you have Facebook, come on over to the Tiny House Connecticut page. There are not too many people in CT who have tiny houses and broadcast it, but there are a bunch who are flying under the radar! I’m researching all the options for legal, or at least more legal, tiny house living in the state of CT. I’d like to have a community tiny house building space (shared tools, public workshops on home construction, open shop nights where anyone can come by and pitch in labor and learn about tiny houses), but first, we’ll need somewhere to put the houses after they are built!

Hi There ! As a tiny house fan, I must agree this is of huge importance ! For when or if looking for a special someone, to share a small space with, so many dynamics come into the mix, mainly being the desire to use less. I also feel one very important one, is that you both having similar “spending habits” and how each view that. As most who favor this lifestyle, that I have spoken with truly dislike waste and place strong value on the energy required to earn it. They prefer freeing up that time to spend on far more joyful pursuits !
