This tiny cottage built for $11k is a guest post by Dominique Poulin

We recently built this tiny cottage with help from family and friends in Saint-Andre- Avellin, Quebec, Canada for 11k. We were lucky to have a neighbor mill all the exterior wood from our very own trees! The interior is not quite finished but we are getting there.

We plan to remain off-grid and install solar in the coming year as well as build a well. We have about 60 acres of land, and are planning to build more tiny cottages.

We would be willing to share the place with other tiny house dwellers on wheels for free. It has a lovely river which is swimmable and lots of forest. We have big plans for a garden and fruit trees. Hope you enjoyed the photos.

Our big thanks to Dominique Poulin for sharing their tiny cottage and offering the community a place to park our tiny homes on wheels!

If you enjoyed this tiny cottage built for just $11k you’ll absolutely LOVE our free daily tiny house newsletter with even more! Thank you!

Why is it people send pictures of the outside, or of a creek, but not the interior?

Seriously, people! What’s with the entitlement mentality on interior pictures? The author stated that the interior wasn’t quite finished. Did you notice the part where she mentioned sharing their beautiful site with other tiny home dwellers for FREE? Maybe that could be a focus instead of what you didn’t get in the pictures.

        You’re welcome, Alex! And I wasn’t “fussing” at people who ask nicely, but at one particular comment that must have been edited to delete the petulant tone. ;-}

Jess, petulant entitled “victims” are everywhere. Don’t apologize for calling them out. They ask basic questions indicating they never bothered to read the article, or don’t know much about THs, yet if you reply, all of a sudden they are indignant experts on the topic, and you have offended or insulted them by responding. I have been labeled “inflammatory” by fellow commenters on here. Wah. Hope to see you on here again 🙂

OK…..so I get the part about the interior not being done so there are no pix……….but I have a few other questions. What size is this particular cottage and apparently there are plans for a loft?? Love the VERY generous offer of sharing the land, but what would the actual arrangements be?? How far is it to the nearest sewage dump station and what is the weather like in regards to snow fall, etc. What are the intentions for the other tiny homes you plan on building? I could REALLY get in to this! I live in a 14 room house and have been looking at, talking and dreaming about down sizing…..probably not to a TINY house, but definitely a MUCH smaller one. I have three passions………music (have a harp and keyboards at present) sewing and crafts (would need a basement so as not to unnecessarily increase the SF, and gardening. Have raised beds and fruit trees and recently purchased a grow light system to raise organic plants for my gardens next year as well as wheat grass and greens for this winter. I can and freeze and do some dehydrating, but can do without the freezing and with a small summer kitchen off to the side, can make quick work of the canning. I’m already planning on what I can get rid of (almost everything, lol) and downsizing my clothes. Everything I wear on a regular basis can fit in two, possibly three laundry baskets at the most, so that part is going to be very easy! But I need that basement because sewing, etc. is part of my livelihood. I hope we see more of your exciting project in the future!! Good luck!

Thank you for all your comments. My email adress for those who want to get in touch with me: [email protected].

We are planning a well and a septic tank for next year as we would like to built a common bathroom space.

In answer to your questions the cottage is 12 by 16 with a loft.

Snow removal is an issue in winter, we usually snowshow in. But it is possible to put your tiny house near the road, or to have the driveway cleared.

We are 5 minutes from the village of Saint-André-Avellin and about 45 minutes from Ottawa.

    Regards,
    Dominique Poulin

Dominique, muy generoso de su parte!! El lugar se ve espectacular!
Sin embargo me inquieta la pregunta: ¿Qué requisitos hay para poder acceder a la propiedad?

    • May 9, 2015, 5:25 pm

Bonjour Dominique. Merci pour l’offre du terrain!!! Je viens de l’ouest du Quebec. I’m not interested at the moment, but would love to know a couple of things about your property. How are you planning to heat your home, and how well is it insulated?? Please explain the “common” bathroom space????
I am assuming that you use the cottage only as recreation property, not full time. Thanks!

Very nice. Very nice offer to other TH’ers! I will say that to me the title is missleading. It says off grid cottage built for $11k… but it is not finished and not powered off grid yet. It costs a lot to finish one out especially if you figure your time and solar is not cheap. I suppose they could have double that in it by the time it’s finished. Looks great tho!

Me thinks another Canadian Stampede is about to happen! Watch out! Your lil 60 acres may soon be over run with those of us yearning for wide open spaces dotted with teensy cabins and gorgeous waterways! A VERY generous offer and very tempting!!

Great setting! Have to agree w/ others – a photo of inside, even unfinished, is expected. Have built 12×16 and this looks definitely smaller – counted 21 ribs on the roof (21 x 9″ = 15 ft 9 in.) – and yes, they are still framing in Imperial dimensions in Canada. Imagine that front door sideways and you expect maybe 9′ for the width of this cottage. Quaint, cozy, well-lit, asymmetric roof line (i.e. visual interest) – you’ve got a winner here. très agréable, mon amie!
