Tiny Vintage Cars Towing a Matching Teardrop Trailers

Probably one of the smallest cars on the streets these days. A vintage Fiat is shown here pulling a matching retro teardrop trailer.

As you see below the retro teardrop camper is outfitted in coordinating red and white checkered fabric. This classic trailer is chic in its own retro way.

I’d love to see this vintage Fiat and retro teardrop trailer pull up to a diner or drive-in theater. Sometimes the classics never grow old.

The car pictures isn’t a Fiat but a late fifties lightweight German car. And I doubt it’s tiny motor, trans could handle much other than flat round or down hill.

Even the small Fiat of the would have a hard time pulling this. Not that small cars with better engines, trans, brakes can’t as I’m building just such a vehicle with only 1 rear wheel to be a MC, just not this example.

A very nice Teardrop trailer though as is this car is, just not together as not safe.

Thanks Jerry. And yes it actually does look like two different cars (and a different teardrop in the photos).. Similar but not the same! Sorry about that.

I think the car is a Messerschmitt.

The whole rig is terminally cute though.

Looking closer with my failing eyes I see the lower pic does have a little bit of Fiat showing hidden mostly by the trailer. I’d assumed it was the same as the top pic.

I like the top trailer wheel pants as it’s fairly aero, most are not.

Yes I also assumed they were the same. Pic 2 looks like a Fiat Bambino.

The first car is a BMW Isetta, the second a Fiat 500. And as nobody has a clue from what kind of material these Teardrops are made of (incl. jerryd) they obviously are light enough to be pulled by these cars. Trailers in Europe tend to be built from much lighter materials. Furthermore these Teardrops seem to contain no gear (kitchen etc.) other than a mattress, pillows and blankets which reduces the weight as well.

    Love the retro look!
I have a small trailer not being used and have wanted to build one to tow behind my PT Cruiser. This gives me some ideas.

Actually, the little red car was produced by “BMW” and is called the “Isetta”. It was basically an “enclosed motorcycle”, that had a door in front (and the steering wheel swiveled out of the way when opened…) because you angle parked it to the curb like a bike. Most were 2-seaters, but they did offer a later version that had a side door and small rear seat. They also had large sunroofs to be used as an “escape hatch” should the front door be jammed in a frontal crash. Pretty cool vehicle!

Duke has it right — the car with white top in the first photo is an Isetta; the other almost certainly a Fiat. Used to see Isetta’s fairly often, here in the states during the 1960’s. Now they’re a comparatively rare site and a treat to look-over, if you get the chance. The two teardrops pictured are indeed different models (but lots of common features indicate to me they’re likely by the same manufacturer). I like the bottom-pictured trailer best, with its side ribbing and simple white fenders: not so ostentatious as the fancier trailer above. Sure would like to go camping, though, in either of these! Thanks for the fun post.

One might gear it up with a smaller version of the “van conversion, 4 nut unit furniture on you tube.” just saying. It’s a thought, probably have to lose a bit of that aero dynamic though for sitting up at the “table”. Good for us shorties though. 🙂 Ty for sharing, very cute! Happy Trails and God speed!

    The
    That’s a BMW Issetta.

Duke properly spotted the car as a BMW Isetta.

But Messerschmitt made a car that looks very much like the Isetta. They also made a few really good airplanes, such as the Me-109E that some of our fathers had to shoot down.
