Tiny Beach House by Charlotte Perriand and Louis Vuitton

This post contains affiliate links.

This tiny beach house has a great story behind it because it was originally designed in 1934 by a famous architect in Paris named Charlotte Perriand.

The design is called La Maison au Bord de l’Eau and the purpose was to create an affordable vacation home option for everyday people.

More recently, the popular fashion organization Louis Vuitton created a clothing line with inspiration from Charlotte Perriand. When they unveiled it, they also decided to bring the original La Maison au Bord de l’Eau to life.

So it was build in Italy and then shipped to Miami, Florida and placed on the beach at the Raleigh Hotel in South Beach to show off at the 2013 Design Miami show. This tiny home consists of two wings and an open patio in the center.

Inside one wing you’ll find the kitchen, living, and dining area. And on the other wing you’ll find two bedrooms and a bathroom. All of the rooms open up to the outdoor space which also functions as extra living space. Pretty nice, isn’t it?

The furniture that you see inside was designed by Charlotte Perriand during the 1930’s and 1940’s. Notice the space-saving slide out beds in the rooms. Please enjoy, learn more, and re-share below. Thank you!

What a beautiful little house! You could see from the second video how the sail covering the Paris would react in a storm or in high winds. The circular hole above the water barrel would work for the first few inches of rain, then the patio would flood! However, if a proper roof and folding glass doors were installed, it could be used more widely. I love the sketches show ramps and bridges across to the house, showing it could be built on different sites and that it could be accessible for people with disabilities.
Amazing to think this was originally designed in 1934!

Absolutely fabulous! So clean edge and minimalistic for having been conceived in 1934. Charlotte Perriand was a visionary. I. Want. It. Thank you to the Vuitton organization for reviving it. I wonder where it is now? Did some lucky millionaire swoop in and buy it?

I would love to live in some variation of this. Yes, it is a vacation home that needs insulating for year round use. I would need storage for a library and art supplies. A retractable roof and foldaway windows to enclose the courtyard/studio. Perfect. Especially by a beach or a lake.
Self-build is probably the only way most of us could afford this. What a project! Thanks for finding this one Alex. 🙂

Love it! I wish there was a more adult bedroom and it would be perfect!

Two 40ft insulated shipping containers. Additional steel skeleton supporting permanent glass and solar panels over centre patio.
Optional two additional containers stacked and buried under the on ground containers. These could be used for services and storage.
Maybe it could work for Ontario weather? Beautiful to see, great to dream.

I like the basic design and love the kitchen area, but I would want a regular kitchen with appliances. I got an idea for a design I would want, though, from this house. I would take three large shipping containers and put them in a U shape with an indoor/outdoor deck in the middle. We’d need it covered with a regular roof and heavy, heavy duty screening at the end—strong enough to keep our cats inside but fine enough to keep the bugs out, with foldaway window to close during the cold weather (and believe me out here in Colorado it gets very cold in the winter). Then I would make the back container the kitchen, living, dining area, one side container a master suite just for my husband and me, and the other side an elaborate indoor house for our 10 feline babies. Each side opening onto the deck.

In the living area, I would design some type of guest bed for company, although that would be easy to do on the deck too. Or, better yet, build one of those She Sheds next to the home and turn it into a Guest Suite. I would have solar panels on the roof and an outdoor hot tub because we love to sit in a hot tub while it is snowing (unless it’s a blizzard of course).
I think I just designed our dream home!

We’ve been struggling with trying to figure out how to live in a small home with our 10 rescue cats, well, I think I just solved that.

I love this house. I have designed something similar to it, using 2 prebuilt buildings with a deck/greenhouse in between. The water would overflow too easily in my climate, but I like the concept. Perhaps an overflow that would fill a cistern below the deck. My area is quite cold half the year, so I am leaning toward a small square home.

does anyone know how to get plans this, or contact the builder. I have tried everything I can think of with no luck. went to all the resource sources listed and left messages at the Miami Show Expo number on the site but no luck. I would like to build myself on a less expensive budget then this was, but the blueprint would be the same. Thanks for any help

Maggie, If you showed the video to any architect worth working with, they should be able to prepare the necessary plans for you to build from. While they wouldn’t match exactly, they could easily match the concept and fit the specifics of your situation.

Amazing. This is the home that my husband and I designed for our retirement dream house–almost down to the nail head. Agree with the other comment that the central opening in the roof would flood the open area even with the lines directing the water downward and acting as a rain chain. You gott’a understand water flow and gravity times distance covered when working with hardscapes.

I love it, all accept for the chunks of wood for seating. I am sorry, but I am a minimalist at heart, but I would come up with a better solution than that. Other than that, it is gorgeous. Can you say, just add money?
That is what this tiny home is saying to me.

I just want to say that I have been following tiny houses for years. Love them! I just recently designed my own very similar to this one featured. My husband and I are developers and we are currently building one very similar to this on an island in the bahamas called Eleuthera. We also have land for sale if anyone would like to have a home built as well. Take a look at our website, http://www.paradisecovebahams.com
and YES they are very affordable

Would love to see the houses you’re describing, but I don’t believe the link goes where you intended it to. I spent some time as a child on Eleuthera. Gorgeous!!

Perfect. Size, proportions, colors, textures, furniture, execution.

Small house with huge patio. This makes sense.

Slide-away beds. Curved back-rest on the couch. Shower inclusive entire water-closet. Artichoke pond. Subdued lighting. Smoky Blues by Norwegian school-teacher Arne Bang Huseby. Breathing space.

    Hey, Jock, been smoking long?

Add the name Louis Vuitton to something and increase the price by 5,000%?

    Probably I reckon.

Simplicity rhymes with sincerity, but in this case by simple squares that refer to the “Modernism” of Walter Gropius, actually reveals a genial bulding that like a crown around the daytime sleeping area and services environments with a central living that fulfills a role of relaxation and aggregation. Brightness and intimacy are the additional element and parallel to total architecture. Excellent finishings and designe. Corently it is a sincere and genuine interpretation of the architect made wonderfully!
