The Saskatchewan Small House Design

The Saskatchewan….

The province of Saskatchewan is situated between the two other prairie provinces of Alberta and Manitoba. In addition to the flat prairies which are optimum for agriculture and ranching, the northern portion is treed and has many lakes ideal for fishing. Areas in southern Saskatchewan feature badlands, sand hills and treed plateaus.

The Saskatchewan plan pays tribute to the iconic grain elevators which were once landmarks along the railways and highways for the many small villages and towns. The 722 sq. ft. 3-storey home has an open floor plan on the main floor and instead of the usual rectangle the kitchen island also features the shape of Saskatchewan! Tucked under the stairs is the laundry, while the sitting area has a small gas stove for heating. The bathroom is on the second floor as well as a bedroom which opens out onto a large deck. Up the stairs one more flight there is a bonus room with doors opening onto a small balcony front and back.
Every elevator also had a detached building that housed the office and equipment. We have designed a small studio with a bath linked by the deck for guests which adds another 160 square feet of living area.

Love the concept. Now if you can find a grain elevator still standing to renovate…bonus!!

I have never left a comment before after being here for over three years. That being said and having lived my entire life in Saskatchewan, (almost 6 decades), Excellent design. We have extreme temp change, for example summer highs could reach 40c (100F) in June-Aug. and ( -40 f/c late Dec. early Feb. but normal is usually around ( – 12c/20f) highs and (-25-30 c /8 – 0 f) lows in the winter months in the central part of Saskatchewan. The extreme areas are warm in the SW central and cold in the NE central. Heat rises, cold falls, so this design is easy to heat and cool (with good insulation) year around and so Iconic of our history

What a totally perfect and iconic design solution for that landscape. The owners and the designer certainly must have a great sense of humor. One needs a lot of humor to survive prairie-life, especially in the winter

I’m having trouble seeing myself getting back & forth between the bedroom and the rest of the house at 40 below and in 4’ of snow !!! Not much fun?
