The NestHouse by Jonathan Avery of Tiny House Scotland

tinyhousescotland.co.uk

I started Tiny House Scotland in February 2014 as an overall banner for my experimental small-scale eco-building projects.

After many months of research and development, I built the first prototype – the NestHouse which is now complete and undergoing testing. I am currently working on the next project – a road towable design called the NestPod which will start building very soon.

Tiny House Scotland represents my personal crusade to bring together the physics of building science with aesthetic design and individual craftsmanship to create a new alternative for small-scale sustainable living. The aim is to create a holistic result which is beautiful and functional both inside and outside.

My lifelong passion for architecture and green design prompted me to design a beautifully crafted small wooden building with high-quality sustainable materials, offering complete protection from the elements. A fundamental shelter with a totally comfortable interior that is light-filled, snug and charming.

The Nesthouse combines many innovative techniques in its construction. Unlike traditional architecture, the shell is conceived as a whole – not a series of interconnected and differently structured walls, floor and roof. My Snug Shell Concept with Advanced Framing techniques creates a stressed-skin timber frame shell which is heavily insulated but also has a further unbroken (apart from door and windows) outer shell of outsulation to remove virtually all thermal bridging, effectively providing a fully insulated combined roof/ wall / floor structure. The double or triple glazed windows ‘float’ within this outer shell. The Nesthouse is designed with a solar orientation so it had minimal glazing on the North elevation reducing heat loss while the Southerly elevation gains solar energy passively with large windows. A brise soleil will provide summer shading over the larger windows.

So my concept for a Moveable Modular Small Eco-house was born and I decided to call it the Nesthouse using the analogy of a bird nesting box – a compact, wooden, eco-friendly survival unit. This was the start of Tiny House Scotland – my business to design and build small-scale moveable homes in Scotland.

Indeed this was my main vision for the Nesthouse – full-time homesteading or micro-living – ideal for singles or couples who want to live sustainably on their land or as an affordable starter home in urban or rural areas. Of course the Nesthouse can just as easily be used as a studio, home office or holiday let, but I do believe that there is a greater purpose here; to provide affordable small housing units – whether for a young person on a Scottish Island beset by the holiday-home phenomenon or a communal housing co-operative like a Tiny House Community.

This holistic approach to living in a small house on a smallholding or small farm with varying degrees of self-sufficiency, or even just taking a conscious decision to live more simply and closer to nature whilst working from home, could mean you could live debt-free without a mortgage.

The need for a sustainable small living options for people who cannot afford £100k plus for a house has to be a compelling argument in this era of housing shortage, not to mention the Planet’s need for us all to want and need less of its resources and practice consumption awareness. I hope in a small way that my Nesthouse can address some of these issues!

Well thought out and utilized storage spaces and I like that some of them are on wheels. And what’s not to love about that bathroom and soaker type tub! Nicely done.

I love the staircase! Much better than those ladders. The pictures show several configurations of the wheeled furniture — very clever. I’d probably make a couple cosmetic changes, like painting/staining all the raw plywood. And find a spot to hang a TV.

What a charming tiny home! Love the airy feeling you get when your inside. All the colors throughout the home co-inside with each other. Great idea as far as the matching furniture works well as storage pieces that just fit together nicely. The loft is a nice little retreat, awesome idea for the closet. Everything through out the home just matches perfectly. love the large deck that you find surrounding the home outside! Thank you for inviting me in.?????

Leave it to the Europeans to come up the with most well planned tiny houses. Every one I see utilizes space in the best way. Nothing looks cluttered. Clean lines, light colors, interesting containers, space savers make it look large and livable, bright and sunny. We Americans need to hire these architects and learn a lesson or two or more! I would put this on a slab today an move in tomorrow if I could.

I am completely in love with this home for the same reasons as listed as above – clean lines, uncluttered, extremely well designed with essential many miss. I also love the furniture on wheels. Such a simple yet effect solution to many problems. I also love that it can be changed around a bit. I need to change things around a bit from time to time and to have that option in a tiny home is so perfect to me. Brilliant.

Well it’s amazing what you can learn from reading your information regarding plans 🙂 My honey and I live in the US, Ohio and in the city and pricing for homes has gone through the roof and we are considering other adventures with living smaller. So my question would be, how can we build one of your beautiful designs or a design that you would keep within your philosophy here in the US.
        Thanks,

This is my second-fave tiny house (first-fave is Zyl Vardo’s Moon Dragon). Everything is so well-placed and beautifully finished. And that bathroom – WOW! Crummy bathrooms are my pet peeve with TH’s, but this gem has no such problem. What’s the price for this?

    • Jonathan Avery
      November 6, 2016, 4:25 am

Thanks for the kind comment Sparrow – I’ll happily take second stylistically to Zyl’s Moon Dragon which is on my fave list too(!!!); although that is a Vardo, rather than a heavily insulated near zero energy 7.5 ton house which is what the NestHouse is.
The price for the NestHouse – as you see it in the pictures – around £47,000 GBP, but available as a shell finish from £32,000

Thanks so much, Jonathan! Hmmm…converting that to U.S. dollars, a fully-built version would cost around $58,294. Not at all bad for what you get. I wonder what the Scotland-to-U.S. shipping costs would be? (gulp).

This is my first comment as I finally found a “Tiny House” which I think I could actually live in for a long period of time. I feel the combination of abundance of sunlight and strategically placed living area (Toilet/Shower and stairs for sleeping areas) well planned. One point I would enjoy is a bit more “Solar / Eco” measures such as sun panels etc. Otherwise, great build and awsome creativity!

    • Jonathan Avery
      November 10, 2016, 6:22 am

Many thanks for your comments Brian! The NestHouse prototype does not have solar panels yet but it is available as a full off grid version or indeed hybrid with batteries and mains hook-up. It does a lot of work with its solar orientation though (a la Passivhaus methods) so its required energy input is very low. Oh, and while you guys are recovering from Election fever (ouch!) – here is my manifesto for Tiny House Scotland!! https://tinyhousescotland.co.uk/tiny-house-scotland-the-manifesto/

Went to your site..Not really a conversation place. So I will state I have never been to heaven, but I have been to China. And what you might look at is some way to expand the sleeping area where older people can stand up. Worldwide a lot of people not built like Jackrabbits or young and drunk and twenty might consider your product…Which is odd for me..as THAT is my only complaint. Every other aspect is WAY UP on the WOW Meter.

Ahh….! Lake Placid again..A name I have given this Tiny House because of it’s color scheme… And I finally get the nesting name it’s been given, as it reminds of a set of nesting tables, if looked at from it’s frontal, or profile view…! Or at least I’m guessing it’s why it has it’s name… ( Honestly I never really had time to read the whole story behind this Tiny House, so I am assuming ..)

So adorable! Love it! The colors are so refreshing and uplifting. I would probably put the couch over by all the windows and the table where the couch is,but that’s just personal preference.

Best tiny house design I have ever seen.

  • david
    May 10, 2017, 1:56 pm

I like this design quite a lot. And the many windows give such lovely “nature” feel: bright, airy, freedom! Then, what this house also shows, I’d say better than any other house I’ve ever seen: what a waste of space and freedom a gable roof is! It’s beyond me why so many builders aren’t practical, when they decide on the roof design. And if it’s for beauty reasons? Hey, there are so many more beautiful roof designs too.
But if you haven’t seen those, obviously you’ll find this gable roof the most beautfiful possible.

    • Alison
      May 10, 2017, 6:06 pm

The gable is the classic shape, embedded in our psyches. They do shed snow and rain well. A friend of mine has a theory that low ceilings make people aggressive and irrational, and you have to admit that these open, high gables have a nice airy feel. But there are certainly other good options that might make ‘better'(?) use of space.
I like the natural plywood walls.

I really, really like this. I would tweak a bit for myself (a larger fridge/freezer, a kitchen pantry, and mostly a washer/dryer.) I would live in this in a heartbeat. I love the light look of the natural plywood/paneling.

Lovely. It even looks like there would be room to set up my loom so I could weave away the pleasant hours in my lovely little home.

Gee what can I say? Finally something amazing and in Scotland and only a mere 50 or so miles from me, I have died and gone to heaven I really have its truly the work of my dream home!! How did you do that? Were you in my brain? As its really truthfully EXACTLY as I want, colours in all, I am semi disabled and retired, so a lot of reading, writing and web stuff so the sheer abundance of natural light in this build is a massive result for my lifestyle and needs, if it was wholly totally off-grid I would kill for it like many I would want it in the glorious Highlands of Scotland having just recently been forced to move back to the metropolis that is Glasgow (well it’s outskirts anyway 🙂 ) through circumstance and no suitable housing for me in Lochaber where I was extremely happy until the ruling council decided to take my spectacular cottage in Morar overlooking the River Morar and the world famous “Silver sands of Morar, away from me on some technicalities in reference to my disabilities and further abandon me bang smack in the middle of Fort William which I hated from day one and couldn’t wait to get out of there, so you see when you have had an such amazing home and lost it!!!! And something as amazing comes along that might just be possible (money aside 🙂 )
If only I was able to lease one very long term (I’m 53 so for the rest of my life) I would pack now and be there tomorrow, so my friends, builders and enthusiasts IF you can find a way to provide such a spectacular home for me please don’t hesitate to contact me (or any equally spectacular TH or cottage in the NW Highlands (Lochaber preferred) I’m all ears there would I’m sure in fact positive there would be a market for holiday letting or full time letting such a property or small exclusive development of these in Scotland but I bags the FIRST one just show me where I sign 🙂
Until a kind benefactor happens along I shall just have to remain here doing the lottery and hoping upon hope something changes but if I ever did win I would order one of these immediately for sure.
Bravo bravo bravo one very special build and in Scotland too, I take back all my moans about Scotland having no TH interest as obviously it does but to my knowledge no active enthusiasts community? If there is either a website community or Facebook community of Scottish TH enthusiasts that I have not yet found please point me in the right direction or fancy setting one up? I’m game for that also.
Until something happens in any area noted above regards to one and all from a delightfully unseasonal bright sunny hot central Scotland 🙂 🙂

Avery = Light and nimble as a BIRD!
What a terrific and fantastic tiny home. Your brain is so amazing to come up with such an incredible build. So peaceful, so full of light, so very functional & such soothing/pleasing colors. Love it all. Love how the winding stairs beckon exploration. Wonderful drying rack, is it on a pulley system? And you can rearrange large objects as needed! Please come to the US and build your homes or start a new NestHouse Tiny Bird Branch here. Or place one in a museum or library in US so more people can see what you’ve created. Alex, maybe your readers would help fund such an exhibit.

I’m more than happy to be your gineau pig to live in this to show how easy it would be and sing your praises to anyone that wishes to view get in touch 🙂
As I said in my post above a “Scottish” TH website community would be the utmostly best way forwards to get the word out of here in Bonnie Scotland, catering to Scottish people, and their specific needs from such a property, now with a “Scottish” builder backing it can only help both that builder and a community both working for each other, I have plenty of time on my hands to set it up and run it if you would be interested I am happy to discuss it further, we have a very unique opportunity to be first in Scotland to do so not a situation to be sneezed at my friend, would love to discuss this idea further with you I am here should you wish to throw some ideas about.
        Yours Dougie 🙂

This was my favourite solid foundation tiny home when I first saw it months ago and it still looks as good. At last a design that allows the furniture to be moved around depending on the season or what else is going on. Fixed furniture is a nightmare for anyone who has differing needs at different times. For example when sewing I need space for a table I can walk around while pattern making/fabric cutting as well as a smaller table for a machine to sew on. When painting I need floor space for my easel, chair and work unit for my paints/brushes/cleaner etc. This is the first house that would allow me to work inside without having to purchase an extra building for sewing/painting. Others, like my daughter who is a hairdresser/make-up artist who sometimes works from home would also be able to use the house instead of having to purchase/build a work shop for clients to visit if desired. Most tiny homes build everything in meaning that you can’t adapt the design for multi use which is essential for anyone who works from home either full time or part time. Well done to the designers, other than some THoWs from New Zealand – Pohutakawa and Kauri models – this is the ideal design. Easily adapted for families as well.

Once again many thanks for the many kind comments on Tiny House Talk about my NestHouse™ – so many of you have really GOT the features and ideas that I set out to incorporate…it’s very gratifying and important to me as a designer craftsman working on my own and trying to lead a sustainable lifestyle with my craft.

My new tiny house – the NestPod™ has just been delivered to a client in Portugal – so keep your eyes out for that when I release it…there are some sneak peaks on my website for now: https://tinyhousescotland.co.uk/nestpod-tiny-house-caravan-wagon/
Note for Diana Angell the bathroom is under the sleeping loft – it’s the door at the end of the living space!!

Check out Cook County, Minnesota – you can build andplace your tiny home there on your own land and live in it full-time! Talk to zoning – they are very open to tiny houses. Murphy Mountain area in Grand Marais (Cook County) – gorgeous area and the town of Grand Marais is right on Lake Superior with a pretty lighthouse and natural harbor.

The NestHouse has been my absolute favorite since I first discovered it in 2016. Your high standards were as important to me as yout impeccble color design sense, and yeah, it was the orange, lime and aqua with natural wood that I drooled over first, LOL. I have known that the Nest Pod was coming since I first read your website material. So I was SO excited to have a link to new info. I LOVE how the Nest Pod options look….but now ask me how much I would have paid for a photo spread of the interior!! I know there is only the one finished, but next time, please send pics! Maybe we could see a floor and elevations plans in the meantime?

Stunning! Outside and inside. The colors are attracting. Wood burning stove is classy where it sits. Very clean and precise. When we get one. I need a big fridge. I love to cook and eat. Kitchen is perfect and I could cook in it. Has room for a butcher block too. Skinny one. Green door outside makes it really stand out.

I find tiny homes most intriguing however I could never have a loft bedroom for two reasons: too old to make the narrow steep climb and at the age where the toilet must be handy. I can’t seem to find a tiny home on one level. Do you design them?

What a lovely wee house! Aesthetically, it is near perfect…ok, I’m not a fan of the apple green front door but it’s not the end of the world as we know it…and even though I am not a fan of wood with lots of knots, because the knots are small and are uniform throughout the interior, it just seems to work. I love that the wood is a light color and hope, after aging for some years, it stays that way. There is such a pleasant serenity with this Tiny that is not always achieved and it’s why there are so many positive comments with this one. And I am blown away by the clever storage! Those shelves and storage on wheels should be part of every home whether tiny or not! Even the slots next to the stove for the cutting boards is such a clever idea for an otherwise unusable space! I love how they combined both open and closed cupboards above the sink and counter. Some of our stuff is worthy of seeing and some of it is worthy of being hidden so it is the best of both worlds! Others have mentioned the versatility in furniture arrangement which allows for fabulous interior refreshes and wholeheartedly agree! Now, thinking of this being a residence and not a BnB, I can see a couple of things I would like to change slightly. I really do wish that there could be a regular refrigerator so fewer trips to the grocery store would be required and even though the indentations on the exterior might add some interest instead of having flat sides, bringing those parts out to all be the same width would add so much to the interior space. The part by the front door could still be shorter so that second roof line wouldn’t be lost but if you add to the sq. footage on the interior, you could use it for more storage or just a greater feeling of space. The coziness isn’t lost on me but in going Tiny, thinking in practical terms is sometimes necessary. I don’t think it would mean it was less attractive. Expanding the first floor to match the upstairs loft would also add some much needed interior space without harming how pleasant the whole look of it is. Honestly, it is lovely the way it is but those few suggestions could add some ease to tiny living and are based solely on my own personal preferences and needs. I say kudos to the designer(s) for a job well done! There’s NestHouse and NestPod…I’d love to see that one…and the expanded Tiny could be NestHousePlus. I’m not sure when this was originally posted but it was probably prior to my finding the Tiny House Newsletter during the pandemic as I haven’t ever seen it before so I appreciate it being shared again. Love seeing those that are from the beginning of the movement! Thank you for sharing, as always!!!
