The Moving House Tiny Motorhome

This is The Moving House. It’s a custom converted tiny motorhome using a 2011 Mercedes Benz Sprinter 313. You can actually see how they built most of it right here on their blog.

When you go inside, you’ll notice it has a cozy space that feels a lot more like home when you compare it to most motorhomes. According to This Moving House, they can build a van for you. It takes them about 13 weeks to complete.

The van still has four legal seats with seatbelts for travel.

This area has a table available.

And behind you is the lovely tiny home area of the van.

Sorry, this isn’t a home, this is a beautiful camper. Showing 6 times the same view isn’t making it a home either. If it had a bathroom I’d love it as a camper.

Many people wouldn’t classify a Tiny House on Wheels as a home either. I think it’s wise to be cautious about labelling things “not home” if someone, in fact, wants and can live in them. It hurts the whole movement! — Tiny House Talk Team

Nice motorhome/camper/weekend van, call it what you will. No loo or shower? Would be very hard to live in this. And believe me, I’ve tried living in a van like this!

Just wondering what makes you feel that every comment is one from a wise and experienced user? I comment from time to time on how I feel about some of the tiny homes featured in regards to how they would be suitable or slight changes that would make them me suitable for me if were ever to live tiny.
Perhaps you would care to fill the rest of us in on ‘your expertise’

I’m with David. Beautiful camper; not a home. A home meets three (3) requirements: (1) eating, (2) sleeping, and (3) bathroom facilities for washing up and other physical (and private) needs. Going in the woods doesn’t qualify a place as a home. Even cabins minus bathroom facilities may be spaces people occupy but it doesn’t make them a home; I call them “shacks”.

PS THOWs that meet the requirements of three are, most certainly, homes.

does a tiny house actually need an inside bathroom to be considered a home? If that was the case all those homes in the past and even to this day that have outhouses, would not be considered homes for that reason, and we all know that is not the case. A home or house mostly is a shelter from the weather, a place to sleep, and eat. If it has inside pluming that is a plus but does not make it any less a shelter to be used as a homestead. I like this design, could it use a portable potty sure and a shower and a washer and dryer. But there are places we can all go to do the very same things outside of the van/tiny home/cabin/camper/. Minimalist means you do not have to have a trump style bathroom. Just a bucket, 5 gallons of water, and a creek to wash your clothes work as well as any thing else

I totally agree Natalie, If you love it and you live in it then it is your home! Simple as that !

I love this. I have often fantasized about living in one of these with my kiddos!!! The toilet and bathing would be an issue. I’d get a longer one and add a bathroom at the back. I would also probably lose the back bed and make more storage for clothes and gear. It’s really nicely done tho!!!

I don’t think we need to blur the lines this much. It’s not a house. It’s a small motorhome. Or camper. I suppose they would call it a “3 bedroom home?”

    • Natalie
      December 19, 2016, 11:28 am

Not trying to blur lines — Although many people associate “tiny homes” with THOWs, our definition of tiny home is simply a dwelling smaller than 400 sq. ft. — Tiny House Talk Team

We post a variety of housing for the extremely varied audience we have 🙂 THOWs for couples looking for a first home, motorhomes for single folk wanting to travel, 600 sq. ft. places on foundations with no lofts for older people — you’ll get it all! — Tiny House Talk Team

The problem with these vehicles is that living in them, unless you are very, very short, means you are going to be stooping all the time where you should be standing. That would get very old, incredibly quick.

    • Natalie
      December 19, 2016, 10:47 am

        December 19, 2016, 4:20 pm

This van has had a raised floor installed further lessening the headspace. I know some people even live in cars–but I don’t think this was meant to be a long term home. Besides, just how short are you?

    • Eric
      January 18, 2017, 4:33 am

Well when I said very, very short I was meaning sort of like my wife who is 4′ 11 1/2″ tall.

But even she would have an issue with the height of one of these. Not everybody (most people?) would be amenable to stooping all the time in a motorhome. Heck, for me the twisting and turning in a conventional caravan is bad enough, especially in and out of a typical caravan’s family dining table with bench seats either side.

      • Natalie

    December 19, 2016, 8:31 am

I think I would lose the bed in the back and use that space for a bathroom and storage. I’d also most likely lose two of the seats personally I think they take up too much needed room. it’s a cute lil camper van.

Ditto your comments up to the “camper van” comment. Although I am not one of them, there are a lot of minimalists out there that live in this amount of space or less and call it home — many of them live in New York City. The fact that this “home” has wheels like any other THOW means it is a “tag-along house” and I like that idea.

    Ok guys simmer down
It’s Christmas for goodness sake, and it’s built in the UK (an almost first for here, many more to come from these shores I trust 🙂 )
It’s most certainly a Motor Caravan actually as Bourne out by its DVLA (motor beauro registration DMV I think you call it)
Having designed and built a few in my time 🙂 mostly based on the ever popular VW Transporters (Eurovans to the US) my last one an early VW T4 (circa 1990) a swb, tin top, as this was prior to steel high tops and LWB models being produced anyway a company in the UK called Autosleeper custom made a lwb high top version for the camper market called a “Trophy” it had a fibreglass HT grafted on and a fibreglass complete shower & Toilet on the back protruding about 2 ft or so further than the original swb would have, and in fact taking it to the length of the later 92/93 model LWB models but it allowed for a nifty complete shower room on one side and full flushing toilet on the other on a walk through basis allowing 4 seated and belted persons on board and walk through from cab to toilet (a very handy addition with my ex let me tell you how has such a weak bladder but anyway moving on >>>> as I am disabled it meant I had access to the toilet always and was able to getup out of bed to make a cup of tea through the night also as it had a full galley kitchen with house quality/size white goods but having two single beds worked well for us in truth and is a design not favoured by builders who seem to favour r/r beds that block everything up when down also restricts early morning breakfasts etc etc so no it’s a superb plan but if it were me I would loose the top bunk going breadth ways and bring the double forwards and have an L shaped kitchen that would allow space right at the rear for a toilet one side and shower at the other easy peasy making it a spectacular vehicle for two plus one oh and loose 1 X front (rear) seat

    December 30, 2016, 6:19 pm

This is a nice build. Would I do it differently ? Absolutely, I think most everybody would just because there are so many options to roll with & we all have various wants, needs, & desires. I believe they built this van to suit their needs & desires & they did a great job! Obviously a bathroom was unimportant to them & they decided to utilize the space in a different manner. They also wanted to have travel capacity for 4 people (seats). Pretty cool & unique bed layout. I don’t ever recall seeing one like it so 2 thumbs up for the creativity.
My daily driver is a 2015 Nissan NV200 van. I’m going to start a conversion on it shortly after the new year. Not much space to work with so it will be a challenge.

So if it had a port a potty then could it be call a TH? I would like to know. I have two TH that have no built in bathroom. 4 of my TH are under 9 feet long , 6.6 feet wide do these count as TH or am I just kidding my self? What these people did to this van took time and they care how it look to others. It is their home and they have the right to live how they want to live. I think they did a good job on it. I try to build my TH s out of what ever I find. Plywood or even a fiberglass sheets can be made into a TH.

One day we will all be in tiny houses…called coffins. No bathroom…
I like dug’s one sentence–whatever it was. Or why someone would have tea in the middle of the night with a weak bladder. Such mysteries…
Anything can be a house, tiny house, ugly house, cheap house, expensive house, modify it any way you want. What does a label matter? No one is contesting anyone’s right to live as they please. It is what this is all about. And every comment is nothing more than just an opinion.

    • Dug
      January 1, 2017, 9:40 am

I should just point out nobody said I had a weak bladder ? I often can’t skeep due to extreme pain thus a cup of tea settles me helps to dissolve pain killers and get me back to sleep hence why it’s important that I can access the kitchen without waking the other half ! That said I’m now single again and am currently designing a unit for just Moi and this will be a total custom vehicle to suit me and only me, possibly with added ability to accommodate my much now needed wheelchair and other disability needs all built into a far smaller Connect or Caddy sized vehicle – Watch this space along with a container home if I can ever obtain suitable land on which to do so as Scotland/UK is very hard to achieve this sadly but I won’t give up trying regardless

    • January 1, 2017, 9:48 am

When I was building mine the “city” and “cops” came by to talk to me day. I change it to look like a homemade enclosed trailer. No ton of windows, nothing that makes it look like a TH. The AC unit is stuck in the windbreaker on the front. With the doors closed you do not see it. I have travel with my smaller day runner TH. Fishing trips and Cops came by to make sure I was not drinking or making a mess of the grounds . Bless your heart. Happy New Year.

Plenty of cheap land in the states if you don’t need a job. And out in the sticks you can have a tiny house built for you real cheap–or have a pre-fab delivered. If an area where property taxes are calculated on your home’s worth–then I would have all kinds of paperwork showing how little it cost! Whatever it took to establish that low valuation from the beginning. With an efficient house your utility costs will be low. Food is about the same everywhere. The five-thousand pound gorilla that is now up in the air is health care cost(s). Many seniors have to work crappy jobs just to have coverage. Now THAT’S a sin!
But maybe it’s time for all states to designate some free living land areas. No taxes, no restrictions, no harassment. Why not? They build refugee camps in other countries and provide them with food and health care.

REALLY smartly designed kitchen, storage and sleeping areas. They’ve even put in a good sink! Whoever designed this is clearly talented enough to be able to reconfigure things to included bathroom facilities over where the two back seats & table are now.

    • April 3, 2017, 8:29 pm

Nice kitchen but no refrigerator??? Unless it’s very cleverly hidden somewhere.

      • October 10, 2017, 2:38 pm

I looked and didn’t actually see a fridge. There might be a mini behind the doors under the sink. No one was asking me but if they did I’d say maybe ditch two of the big swivel chairs and that big bed area just beyond the sink to make room for a fridge and bathroom-like facilities.

      • October 10, 2017, 2:43 pm

P.S. I checked out the “See More” link. There is a mini fridge behind the doors under the sink.

Who are we to say what someone else may call home. It is a great tiny motor home. How often most forget, indoor plumbing was not part of a home in our history. Those living off the grid, living in Alaska, and certain communities (Amish) etc, still may use other means to wash or take care of business out side of the home/motor home. For all we know the park right next to a very expensive lavish spa! Thank you Tiny House News. I enjoy all your information you share. I may not alway like the layout, plan or decor. But I remember it also is someone else’s great idea, and with them enjoyment.

I consider a Home a product of independence. If I have to depend on basics like washing and going to the bathroom somewhere else, or let me rephase that statement…If I don’t know where I’m going to be able to shower and use a bathroom, (especially for number 2) then I’m afraid that’s not going to cut it. In fact just a basic toilet and a standup shower is all I need. Maybe if you got rid of that back bed and used that space to make a bathroom, then I would call it a “Home on Wheels”! Until then, it’s a really nice van with most of the comforts of a camper, but certainly not all. I would probably get a Porta-Potty to cover the toilet aspect and then use the back bed space to make a stand up shower. If that could be accomplished, I would have no problem what so ever living in that van and travelling the country, what a dream! Nice job on the van, a couple of minor changes and your golden!

This is a very nice camper for when going camping. But to be able to live in it, I would need my closets, my bathroom, my toilet. Without them, it is just something nice to take when going out of town.
