  I agree with Eric – nice concept, love the portholes and the round door, but the inside is WAY too dark. White and sea-green paint would make a real difference. Also, the composting toilet…ugh. But otherwise this is awesome!

    Most people who install composting toilets do so because they don’t have sewer or septic hookups, not because they _like_ them. You could fairly easily put in a flush toilet instead, if you were planning on having hookups.

      Now that’s not exactly true Alison, if it was only a matter of finding something to use off-grid then there are plenty of other choices…

      Even flush toilets can be used with a black tank… Like they are in the majority of all RV’s… Among other choices like Porta Potti’s/Cassette Toilets, Dry Flush toilets, Incinerating toilets, etc.

      So people don’t use composting toilets because they have to… Most do it because they consider it an actually better choice.

      Unlike pretty much all other alternatives, composting toilets actually convert the waste into something useful and beneficial to the environment, and it doesn’t require wasting water to do it or even for you to even directly deal with your waste at all…

      When you’re using a composting toilet, it is actually killing off all the pathogens and getting rid of the waste by converting it into compost that you’d naturally find in soil/dirt… It’s basically letting nature do the clean up like it has done for about as long as organic life has existed on this planet…

      You’re not just flushing it away to let some city sewer processing plant deal with it at high cost and release tons of gasses into the atmosphere, like methane, which is 10x the green house gas compared to CO2 or leaving it to pollute the environment until nature finally gets around to dealing with it very slowly…

      Nor are you using a messy flush system that unless you always keep the lid closed releases a fine spray of particulates every time it is flushed and can reach up to a couple of feet in all directions around the toilet…

      It also helps that not using water can help save on water bills and you never have to worry about sewage blockage or septic failures…

      Homesteaders and farmers also can make a lot of uses for compost… It’s a cheap way to feed livestock like chickens, for example, and they turn it into eggs, along with all your other food waste… Among many other uses and it really costs nothing but time and a little space… So Win Win…

      So call them crazy if you want but some people actually like their composting toilets and may even have the opinion that flush toilets are gross…

        James D., I completely agree with you, and I like your clear explanation of the benefits of composting toilets. My comment was a reaction to Sparrow’s “ugh” comment, but I was a bit off base.

        No problem Alison, but you were right though that someone could always just put in a flush toilet if that’s what they really prefer…

        It seems to be missed a lot that these are custom homes and thus anything and everything about them can be changed and done differently…

        One of the reasons people like Tiny Houses is because they provide each person the freedom to do things their way… a rarity in our mass produced one size fits all products world these days…

  I hope she doesn’t have any problems with depression because that is one very dark places. It looks cool but I couldn’t live there.
