From the Builder:

Metal Self Build

Choose a metal chassis, and then decide if you would like our pre-built frame panels, joinery and extra components. Our full kits come with instructions and pre-supplied with all the fixings you could need and some natty little jigs and tools to help you out, as well as our helpful instruction video. If you wish to clad your hut in tin, we put you directly in touch with our supplier, or we can supply you with oak cladding if you require.

Available in 12, 14, 16 and 18 foot lengths – and 7 foot 6 inches wide.

Price starts at £3,150 inc. VAT (approx. $3,930)

Oak Self Build

The oak chassis is a real trademark of a Blackdown Hut, and as carpenters we have to confess to loving them! Again, available in a choice of lengths with the option to add our pre-built frame and joinery onto your shopping list, this does represent a very cost effective way of combining Blackdown heritage and quality with your own hard work and ideas to create something really special. Again, instructions and extras to make your life easier are supplied as standard – we can’t guarantee that you won’t swear at all – but it will definitely be worth it in the end!

Available in 12, 14, 16 and 18 foot lengths – and 7 foot 6 inches wide.

Prices start at £4,600 inc. VAT (approx. $5,740)

Why buy Blackdown Self Build?

At Blackdown® Shepherd Huts we believe in working with you to achieve your dream hut, rather than limiting your options. To that end, we have devised a hut-build which allows you to construct your own artisan hut, with our self-build system. Having built quite a few huts, we’ve used our knowledge to pre-prepare the elements which need specialised equipment or components, but apart from that it’s all down to you and your skills (which can be anything from basic carpentry to fully-fledged builder). A self-build option allows you not only to save money, but also enables you to add your own personal touch every step of the way.

That’s a great way to get a custom THOW because looking on their website I figured out that they are building commercial ones on trailers. Beside that it seems to be really high end quality looking on framing only which provides more horizontal strength than usual stick frames and all the other details.
Height is much less than the standard THOW and there is no loft.
Pricing seems to me competitive, too.
I am going to contact them to learn more.
    Natalie, thanks for sharing.

I like the concept, but I am not really digging them wheels…! You can tow that down the freeway in the US, so it would have to be built to stay where ever it is in the US….! But I know the laws are different in the UK..! I am totally in the dark as to the laws of the UK, so I can not say the pros or cons there… But all in all, I think it would work pretty darn good on a regular axle and tire here in the US…! Brilliant idea….!

Simple road moving solution: You just rent a road legal 20 ft flatbed trailer with ramps, winch up the hut onto the trailer, and move the hut to wherever you wish around town, state or country.

        That’s an option!

Nope, I imagine we couldn’t tow that on the road here in the UK either. As suggested, we would have to move it on a separate trailer, but I guess this would only be a big problem if you were moving around regularly. Fantastic tiny house though!

A great idea, if we can choose our own wheels or just set the kit on cement foundation. Whichever is good!

A google search for images of shepherd’s huts will bring up lots of interiors including full bathrooms – I love these! In the UK they are typically moved on private property by being towed by a tractor. I like the idea of a flat bed to transport them otherwise. The cast iron wheels are beautiful but not practical for a lot of travel. Thanks for posting and reminding me of these, a girl can dream!
