Room To Move Solar-Powered Tiny House in New Zealand

This is a Room to Move home in New Zealand.

It’s a super solar-powered house built from SIPs. New Atlas wrote:

Ex-boat builder and carpenter Jeff Hobbs from New Zealand-based studio Room to Move was recently commissioned to build a special bespoke tiny house for local resident Briar Hale. The 23.95 sq m (257.8 sq ft) house was built using structural insulated panels (SIPs) made from plywood and foam; recycled wood materials and sports multiple off-grid solutions. Hobbs chose to build the home using 62 mm (2.45 in) thick SIPs due to their lightweight, strength, durability and excellent insulation qualities, and also meant that he had extra floor space to work with when designing the home’s interior.

I absolutely love tiny houses! I like the idea of living tiny and living off grid with solar power!

I like the solar panels on the roof , I would think with all of them this house would be a charm to keep of grid…!

As a firm believer in solar ability and a sound, well built house I am really impressed with this house. I have personally seen 1400 square foot house at 7,000 foot elevation with utility bills totaling less than $500 for a year. In the right place a Tiny house could basically be cost free if built correctly. Costly, maybe, but then you are finished except for maintenance.

Very true! I love solar power — we usually have the sun 🙂

Looks great except for the heater being right next to the stairs. Putting the stairs on the opposite side at the end of the sofa would be safer.

There is a safety railing between the heater and the stairs. It should be fine even if a bit warm. That said, a more central location for the heater might be more effective.

I’d think in a tiny house location isn’t really a factor for heating the whole structure. It’d heat up in very short order.

If you look closely Chel, you will note that there is a vertical pole with a
couple of cross bars attaching to the wall which are all between the stove
and the stairs. The owner and the designer were aware of safety issues.

I just watched the original video on You Tube before you put that safety rail in. I am so glad you did that because if you slipped and grabbed the chimney or water pipes you would get a bad burn or if you fell down the stairs there was nothing to stop you hitting the fire. Good thinking guys.

Watched a video on this about a year and a half ago. That handsome New Zealander..the tall guy…did a long video, including the builder.

    Quite the house!
