Rhino Cubed Nola Shipping Container Tiny House

This 160 sq. ft. shipping container tiny house is built by Rhino Cubed.

“Rhino Cubed is a Colorado based company building artistic tiny homes from shipping containers. A shipping container is a perfect building envelope: structurally sound, water tight, and quasi-portable. Creative artistry and design turn them into unique living structures.” – Rhino Cubed.

They call this model the ‘Nola‘, named after one of the few remaining white rhinos in the world, located in the San Diego Zoo. The tiny home is currently for sale and listed at $63,999 USD.

The colorful artistic shipping container house is equipped with a kitchen and bathroom with full size shower. I love the ocean wave design on the outside of the home.

If you are planning on attending the Tiny House Jamboree in Colorado Springs you’ll get to see the Nola shipping container tiny house.

Wooo, I would hate to know I dropped 64000 on it. I love a good shipping container home but this is not good. I think I’d be more forgiving if it wasn’t made by a “company”.

Matt, I was also stunned at the price. I just got back from the 3 day Tiny House Jamboree and they had this model there. I was completely underwhelmed with it and cannot image how they can justify requesting that much for it.

I didnt even see the price, I was just laughing at the tin roof and the way it was falling off and the lovely joins all over the walls that are left bare. Not to mention the 1970’s stove that would as much power as a smelter lol. Are they open to offers?

I’m sure the artwork on the exterior may be pleasing to a more abstract eye, just not my cup of tea though. The exterior artwork looks as though a lot of creativity went into the painting and design details. Kudos!

However, the interior seems as though it’s not quite finished maybe?!? I was really excited to see tbis container home but for me it’s just…Meh.

I agree with the other posters. I would have to imagine that a lot more could be done with $64k.

Aside from there being no broken windows it looks like someone vandalized this home and stole the contents.

Amen Larry. Hard to believe that people actually send in pictures of this kind of thing, and I do mean thing.

Yep, I’m always extra excited to see a shipping container home – still holding out that I can get one myself one day. But opened this up and…instantly deflated. I can only imagine the high price is for the “artwork” on the outside – surely someone’s taste, but not mine – and frankly, I’d pay to having someone come over and scrub it all off.

Not at all sure where the money is being spent on this one. Seems to me for twice the price you can get 5x the space (anybody remember that lovely double shipping container home [Containers of Hope] that cost about $40,000? Had to have been at least 500 sf, high end finishes. Of course, that was in Costa Rica, but still…).

I hate to make a negative comment but I just don’t see where the cost of this is reasonable. I have seen beautiful materials and craftsmanship on this site for the same price. If I made this from salvaged materials I would be pretty happy with it, but if I were to spend this type of money (which in fact is about what I spent on my small house) I would choose from one of several other builders I’ve seen here.

Just came back from the 3 day Tiny House Jamboree, and nearly every one of the 12-15 tiny homes there could be had for that price and any one of them was nicer, better laid out, etc. than this box.

I am so sorry Marcy I went to hit reply and I guess I hit report by mistake…I fo apologise….the reason I hit reply was I wondered where you went to the jamborie at..I am going hoping to go to Colorado Jamborie ( about 4200 mile roundtrip for me) and wondered if you felt like the jamborie was worth seeing….again sorry for the accidental report..

Susie, Yes, it was at the Jamboree in Colorado Springs. I see that it would be lots of driving for you to come, but if you’d like to see a number of tiny homes and meet other tiny house people, this is the place to be. Many people add mountain time to the trip and camp out. Last year there was no entrance fee, but this year there is a minimal one and you can pay a single fee for all 3 days. Please feel free to contact me if you come and I’ll try to be as helpful as I can.

I can’t believe the price this guy has on this tiny home. The outside is awful and I wouldn’t be caught dead in it. Although the inside is kind of nice, sort of.

  • August 7, 2015, 3:36 pm

I’m pretty sure this is my first negative comment, and I am always surprised at the negativity expressed by some commenters, but I AM going to the Tiny House Jamboree tomorrow, and I hope Rhino has taken the time to tape, mud, and paint the bathroom, fix the ceiling that seems to be falling down, and done a LOT more to justify the $64K price. Although I’m not sure HOW you can justify $400.00/sq ft for this.

  • August 7, 2015, 3:39 pm

There isn’t any accounting for price. Some like utility, some a bit of glitz, some like art and some like mobility…there are lots of ‘some likes’ and the price isn’t any indicator of value….Someone will probably buy this one too, and who knows what the price will end up being for the transaction.

I just love that there are so many here on this site that are passionate about the little house movement..

I absolutely love color but personally think this is overkill. Was was disappointed because I’m looking for ideas ref container homes.

For a company that will build out a container home for you – one stop shopping and they even take care of all permits, etc.: http://www.montainer.org. Haven’t dealt with them but ran across them in an article and thought I’d pass it along since I’m always on the lookout for who the heck will actually build a shipping container home for me – I know from nothing about power tools!

To each his own, but I would never pay that much for this container home! The inside looks fine, but still not worth the money. I like container homes but this one looks like it was parked too long next to a railroad track!

I have to believe cost listed is a typo!

  • Simon
    August 7, 2015, 7:01 pm

I agree with the comments on the exterior paint work, it is too individual and I also think the wood on the roof is not a good contrast to the metal of the container. Once completed the interior finish however looks good, but as always I do not understand the layout. You have little enough floor space as it and yet a sizeable proportion is wasted acting as a corridor beside the bathroom which you can do nothing with. The bathroom should be turned round crossways at the end and the entry door should be on one of the long sides. It is worth what someone will pay for it, but at $64k, that someone is not me.

Sorry, but this reminds me of an abandoned graffiti covered boxcar, not something I would want to spend $63,999 to live in.

.. I think there must have been a typo on the price ..At least one too many zeros .. The street art looks crap too .. Very dumped in an industrial estate/street kid project/ looking ..

I really liked the paint style, the more abstract, the better. The price not so much. Very artistic. Interior had nice clean lines.

Seventy grand? A shipping container costs between $2000 – 3,000.

  • Nancy
    August 8, 2015, 10:37 pm

I agree with some of the others, I think this is my first negative comment.
There’s alot I do NOT like on this one, including the insane price tag.
For $64,000 they could at least recess the electrical

    • Matt
      August 9, 2015, 12:27 pm

I was wondering about that. Is it typical to run the electrical in conduit in container homes? I’m sure it’d be easier but I’ve never noticed it in others.

Well I have to admit that at first glance I thought that the graffiti on the outside was the “before” pix…it’s great to be able to compare the amazing artistic and affordable tiny homes, like that Zy Vardol builder in Portand or some of the other container rehabs to something like this…thanks for giving us choices!

    August 10, 2015, 3:04 pm

I love the paint job, but that kind of abstract on a home is too few people’s taste and who knows long that paint job will really last?
i hate the black square kitchen cabinets. That shipping container is only 2k tops, it’s not even on a trailer. they couldnt have put more than 6k into it. Thats an old oven. no fridge. The layout is not done well. One story ceiling is low, for 64k, they could have put long cylindrical sky window in. It should have been the whole 40ft of shipping container for a 64k house. They had a chance to do something really interesting….

  • Elle
    August 16, 2015, 4:05 am

Is this a joke? I too try to make only positive comments but the asking price for this is an insult to the intelligence. The “artwork”? It looks like some toddlers got into the paint. Yes marine appliances are expensive but that doesn’t begin to justify this ludicrous asking price. I’ve seen some ridiculously high prices for THs but at least they had some semblance of craftmanship and quality. Yikes.

The rhino art is a bit kitschy, however the graffiti is just FABULOUS!!! Really well done.
