Four sites for tiny homes, not too many considering the demand!

      Hi Claude,

Caballos is an animal oriented equestrian community also, so there is more demand for lots than sites. Still we did our best to offer sites for people with Tiny Houses that want to enjoy horses and nature without owning a large parcel of land. Hope this helps further explain the concept.

There are more opportunities for tiny homes on the lots for sale. You can live in your RV or tiny home for up to 2 years while you build your site built home. The site built home has to have a minimum of 1000 square feet, but it can have an attached art studio, indoor atrium, enclosed screened in porch to be included in the square foot requirement. The cool thing is after the site built home is finished, you can turn your tiny home into a guest home, or if you are bringing along an aging loved one, it is the perfect alternative to assisted living. Generations can live on the same property giving each other privacy with mutual support. The amazing thing about the community is all the amenities that are included, you can even bring your horse and dogs! Zhenna is a big animal lover.

Some other questions these communities may want to address:

How close are you to good medical care? It’s not always a good idea for the aging loved one referred to above (or a couple with small children) to need to drive forty or fifty miles to a doctor or hospital.

Is public transportation available? For instance, although my wife drives, I don’t–they just don’t make white canes long enough. A good transit system helps people keep their independence without a car. I bring this up because, as has been said in other articles, tiny homes can be a good option for seniors who wish to downsize and do not want/are no longer able to drive.

I realize these aren’t specifically “tiny house” issues, but as the movement grows and as communities like this are established (and the pictures make me want to move to NM!), addressing them could help to make the communities more attractive, thereby enhancing the tiny house movement.

I’ve actually been in that area. It’s the high desert that borders NM/AZ and it is beautiful. That said it is in the middle of nowhere. Closest “big” town is Lordsburg off RT 10 where they once had a large Japanese internment camp during WWII. Pop. may be 3,000. I would guess the closest medical center would be Tucson or El Paso, each more than 100 miles away. VERY hot in the day VERY cold at night:)

      Dick,

Caballos has big plans for the community and one is to have an area called The Mercado. It is a commercial and business section, designed to meet many of the community’s needs without requiring the daily use of a car. You can easily walk, bike, golf cart, or take your buggy to The Mercado. Space is available for residents who would like to open a business. Plans in the future include grocery pickup, a recording studio, feed and hardware store and more!

I addressed the hospital concerns below.

One more consideration regarding medical care. I broke my ankle 3 years ago. Because of the strong sense of community at Caballos, my neighbors pitched in to help care for my dogs, the house and laundry, my shopping every day during recovery. I had in house nurse care (local nurses) and they along with the in house therapist, gave me far better and more personal care than I would have had in a city.

My friend shattered his ankle in Phoenix. He had to be packed up and hauled off for appointments and therapy, uncomfortable and through traffic. I feel I did better. Plus in a regular neighborhood, no extended community family to pitch in and help. Caballos is a small tight knit community. We all have each others backs.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience, Zhenna!

    Hi Dick,
Caballos caters to specific interests. Equestrians, animals, nature. That is our focus. Our residents range from 21 to well over 70. We are rural and remote. Caballos is just one option of many wonderful options that are out there. We have a local area Dr. and a couple of nurses. The hospital 65 miles away has a helicopter and can be here in minutes. Still not an urban setting but in a more urban setting with all the perks that come with that life, we would lose the very things we value most. It is a trade off. Hope this helps.

  • February 16, 2017, 11:42 pm

There is a doctor and nurse in town. A helicopter can be there in 5 minutes for a serious medical emergency. The larger cities are Bisbee, Douglas and Wilcox which are 65 to 85 miles away. They all have shopping and hospitals.

Call Zhenna for details, she is great to talk to.

So, it’s not really a Tiny House Community in the sense of THOWs.
Too bad. It had me going for a (short) while.

    • February 17, 2017, 5:14 am

Caballos is a mix or site built and Tiny Houses. Without the site built section, we couldn’t offer the extensive amenities.

    Hi David,

Not to worry David. 1000 sq. ft. is not that large and many of our residents include an indoor atrium, earth ship style which is wonderful. Also the way everything is laid out, wildlife can move through most of the community unhampered and we have a resident wildlife habitat management specialist. We cater to wildlife and nature in ways few developments can or do. We take co-existing very seriously.

Building codes are always a drag. But as I mentioned in the above comments, you can live in your tiny home for up to 2 years while you are building on your site that you bought.

You also get to keep it on the property as a second dwelling AFTER you build your site built home. That is incredible.

It is not a tiny home community, it is more than that. It is a community offering some amazing opportunities for tiny homes that I have not seen anywhere else with incredible amenities and very much of a Sanctuary refuge for people and their animals.

How can I get more info re: lots, medical care (we plan to move somewhere when we retired…maybe there) and climate?

I am still confused. Can I have a tiny house without having a stick built house or do I have to build a stick house within 2 years? I currently live in a tiny house in SC which could be moved or sold but i font want to have to build a 1000 plus stick built house.
