This Tall But Tiny House is a Guest Post by Angie Campbell

Hi there,

I wanted to share with you my “tiny” house. I’m newly moved in as of Nov 1st and have been merrily working and living in my tiny footprint, but rather tall home.

It’s 18×20 and has 2.5 levels (around 870 sq. ft.). The bottom level is my reading clinic where I tutor kids after school. The main or 2nd level is my living room, kitchen and bathroom (with lovely high ceilings) and there’s a loft bedroom where I have the bathtub I couldn’t fit in my main level bathroom. I will attach a video I did in the fall and will attach some more up to date pics from earlier this week. I took the pics with my phone, so I apologize if they’re not very clear.

This is just darling. And it’s evident that you are so happy in your new house! May I ask how you built this? And what was your ball park figure not including land? Was it something that you built DIY or contractors? This plan is very nice and one day you would even be able to make your first floor another bedroom if you needed to. It’s just darling. Congratulations!

I adore your tiny but tall home. Did you have this built, or was it a prefab? I’ve been looking for about a year but so unsure as to how to get started. I live alone, and basically a minimalist, minus the books and cds.

My builder and I came up with the plan ourselves after much deliberation 🙂 I had such specific needs where I wanted the structure to house my business too, plus a small budget, and viola!

We’d love for you to share the specifics of the cost ‘as is’, Angie, minus the land. I read a LOT of articles and blogs in my search for a small place. Currently we’re in a roughly 150 sq ft and need something a little larger but the cost estimate is holding us back. It’s nice when the owner shares the nitty gritty.

I’ve been thinking of something like this for me. However, in my imagination it was not nearly a nice as this one! Bravo!

So have I and was surprised at how nice it is. This is about 650 sq ft larger than what my husband and I are in right now. We’re looking at finding a larger place to have a regular kitchen and bath.

Angie: are you my Long Lost Twin?!? There are too many examples of colour choice and furniture design and placement that duplicate my style of decorating to list. I kept shouting, “Oh! I have that chair! I have that colour paint!,” etc.

At one point in my life, I could climb stairs. Bravo to you and your nubile body that you can do it without pain but additional Bravo’s to you for battling against ILLITERACY!!!

What a wonderful place to live. You are so fortunate. No matter the weather outside, inside, it is cheerful, like Springtime.

It’s odd that 800 some square feet is considered “tiny”
I own and old floor and a half cape built sometime ground 1860.
It’s no more than 800 Sq ft.
My next door neighbor who is 90? Or so was raised in the house with 5 other children. Then she raised 4 children in it (my other neighbor)
No complaints about spacertain from either.
Nice tall house by the way. Lovely.

This doesn’t really look like a tiny house tho… It’s over 800sq feet. Really neat tho. I love the height.

Considering her business is the whole bottom floor I feel this home qualifies as the living space is only the top 1.5 floors.
It’s gorgeous. I love the tub upstairs.

Hi, I’m hoping to to build a tiny house in the near future. I doubt it would be as big as what you’ve built but I hope it will be as lovely and homey as your’s. I know you’ll be oh so happy living there! Yours truly Andreas from Toronto Canada

I can hear the pride and joy in your voice. No wonder, it’s beautiful!
I live in the Ottawa region, and have been debating forever if I could get a tiny house. Yours in not tiny but very small, just the right size for me. I am retired and could use your teaching room as a sewing room and storage. Wow for the great natural light. I love your house plan and hope you will share it as well as tell us how much it cost. Would really be helpful.

Hello everyone. Wow! Thank you so much for the wonderful comments and questions. The cost of the land was 20k and the cost of the house was about 125k. The walls are about a foot thick with blown in insulation. I didn’t use an architect. My builder and I worked out the plans. Trevor, the company is Bentley Built Homes. Thanks again everyone for your comments 🙂

I love your new house! The bold colors for the doors and walls really make the classroom downstairs pop. I do have one question though – what have you planned for a fire escape for the top floor? You could probably get some great ideas from your local fire department on that. Your home looks warm, efficient, light and inviting. Great place for a cup of tea! Good on Ya!

I agree with all the comments. Such a great idea mixing work and living quarters. I especially love the separate entries for work and home space. While I was watching the video, I was imagining what I would do with the downstairs space as a work and hobby areas. Really gave me food for thought about how I wish to live in the future as I prepare to retire. Thank you for the tour.

I love your living area!! The first thing I look for in tiny houses are washer/dryers. I didn’t see one in your home. Did I just overlook it?

Terrific design and use of space. I was thinking that a Daybed in the living room area would turn it into a 2 bedroom tiny house.
Are there plans available? What was your cost to build.

I like the light and the feeling of living in a treehouse or a fire tower in a National Park.

One of the best designs I’ve seen. More space than I would need, but I could rearrange. With a Daybed on the first floor, to tops floor would be my ham radio shack and astronomy station. LOL!

    Hi Angie,

We loved your post – especially the video. We did have a couple of questions: First, were any parts of the house pre-fabricated? Second, how long did the construction of your home take?

    Cheers!
