Just got an email this morning from the folks over at Molecule Tiny Homes.

Remember their surfer’s oceanfront tiny house that they built for a client?

And their spacious tiny home with a flip down porch?

Another Spacious Tiny Home on Wheels by Molecule Tiny Homes…

I love Molecule’s tiny house designs and builds because they look and feel like I could easily live in them. Not sure if you feel the same way…

But let’s take you on a photo tour below:

As you can tell right away, plenty of windows to allow lots of natural light inside.

This is the biggest benefit in my opinion with tiny homes versus apartments or studios…

You get all of these windows! And no shared walls.

I absolutely love the custom made backdoor, don’t you?

Micro Storage Shed for Little House on Wheels

You can’t have a livable tiny house on wheels without a micro shed. Alright, let’s go inside..

Notice the storage underneath the staircase to the main sleeping loft.

Small ceiling fan installed to increase circulation in the house. This is a great idea.

If you weren’t open to a sleeping loft before, does a staircase like this make it better? Let us know in the comments if you want. I think the rails help big time.

And there’s even another loft that you can use as the second bedroom or just as storage. This loft is accessible via a ladder.

And of course, the kitchen and bathroom are underneath the second loft. Below is a look at the main loft:

They used an RV style range in the kitchen which is great. A compact stove top oven range like this would also work well.

This is a beautiful home! Don’t think the loft would be a problem with the nice stairs! Wonderful use of space and I really like the kitchen layout. Nice design. I really don’t care for the color in the bathroom, but everything else looks nice. Am curious as to what size fridge goes in the space in the kitchen though. Love it!

So far, this is my absolute FAVE!!! And I’ve had a few others, but with all the natural wood, which I adore PLUS, the necessary requirement: a staircase! It’s got it all!!!

I agree. Hate the purple but love this house. very well thought out. what are the dimensions of this house? looks lavious, and well done. love it because it is so well layed out, just beautiful.!!

You’ve done it again! Great floor plan and I love the staircase, but personally can’t do stairs very well. I don’t know why I’m surprised to see your work improving with each passing day. Ok, now I have a question and hope you take it to the drawing board; how about us senior citizens who are still independent, but don’t maneuver as well as we use to. A lot of us are wanting to downsize, but a little leery of taking that first step. Our homes hold an awful lot of good memories, but we just can’t take care of the house and yard as we use to. Can you help us married couples and single adults?

Joyce, as a 70 year old man with bad knees I may find it increasingly difficult to climb ladders or stairs in coming years. I’m wondering if those chair lifts for stairs could be adapted to this stairway even if it has to be widened a little. It is a great design and the double lofts are a good idea. The second loft could be used as a computer/video/audio studio which appeals to me.

        March 23, 2013, 9:09 pm

Carl, the chair lift sounds like a good idea. Have you seen the Tiny House plan with a raised dining/kitchen area? There is a pull out bed that is located under that area and the stairs leading up have built in storage. They are really getting better each time with their floor designs. One day I’ll see exactly the one I want or design one just for me. 🙂 Still hanging on to my home of 47 years.

I too have been having problems with stairs for seniors. If travel is where you are going, I am not sure this type of unit is cost effective for traveling seniors. It is a great tool for younger people that are uncluttering their lives and love to travel in a unique fashion(and can DIY) if you have to purchase however rather than DIY maybe a little expensive new. I recoment looking at some Ideas I am sharing on 4Fathoms Designs facebook page to see the larger format that I think fits seniors a bit better. A kind of step before you go tiny house.

These folks do tiny homes in an amazing way…this one is phenomenal. One of my favorite ideas ever came from Molecule in their first house with the studio companion…a tiny house docked at a nice deck connecting it with a studio space built as a small twin to the tiny house. Outdoor space, house, and office, all connected… brilliant stuff.

    March 19, 2013, 12:01 pm

This is a great design. I was staring at this one a few days ago.
I would lose the “back door” and take the space instead because hey, the house is tiny and there’s already a big door entrance. I LOVE that more designers are putting in bigger fridges that you don’t have to bend over and poke around in. You can see where the fridge is placed on top of a box that looks like it might be more storage–I’ve seen it in other pics on their website. Excellent.
I would put awning crank out windows up in the lofts instead of sliders so I wouldn’t have to worry about heavy blowing rain and going up there to close windows.
The tub looks tiny…not sure the length. In the space available I would love to see a deep Japanese style soaking tub or if wide enough one of those tubs with a door on it. I don’t need one now but in the future? Great job on the stairs and just all around guys!

Generally nice design. It looks like quality work.

    Likes:
    the dormers,
    the accent walls,
the steps (thought they could be split tread and take up half the space),
    the arched top door,
the kitchen lay out with shallow base units and built in wall shelf,
the faux roof accent above the patio door.
    Compost toilet-
cabinet over toilet for storage- see comment below.
nice mix of natural wood interior and painted luane wall panels.
nice railings and trim on lofts.
    bathtub.

    Concerns:
gas appliances- gas anything is ON grid and petroleum based. As nice as the alternative stove was, it wouldn’t work in this kitchen because of the shallow base units,
If you were going to go with gas stove, you should have a vented hood.
No 12 volt wiring for lights and outlets- IN ADDITION to some 120 volt AC outlets,
A paper/petroleum roof – (really?) they fail miserably… and they are much heavier than a metal roof,
the windows – there are too many of them, they are cheap looking and not in keeping with the character of this house, no grids, both sliding AND single hung windows on the same house, they look off the shelf from the nearest big box store, no accent around them on the exterior.
A large double panel French door- too big, a single glass door would be adequate. A door like this makes the rest of the house look smaller than it is. Personally, any glass door is a safety issue for breaking and entering,
The protruding 2nd floor on the hitch end- looks weird, looks like a 5th wheel, looks… not like a cottage, look clumsy, If it stuck out farther and had a porch under, that would work. This doesn’t.
cabinet over toilet- good idea, but this one hangs down too far. something half that size would be appropriate and hung from the ceiling. Here one is sure to bump their head.

    Overall, quality work.

      June 10, 2013, 7:32 pm

Excellent feedback, Erik. Nice to see a reaction with a bit more substance than “so cute!!! OMG!!! LOVE!!!”

I’d add to your list of concerns: too many surface materials! Laminate, knotty pine, wood cabinetry, and it looks like they’ve used floor tiles for kitchen counters. It looks like someone walked into Home Depot and looked for whatever was cheap instead of what worked. I’m all for economizing, but somehow this suggests they just didn’t know any better than to mix so many surfaces in such a small space.

At least they’re not using bathroom sinks in the kitchen anymore or vinyl floor material for the tub/shower surround. Cringe-worthy.

(Sorry for sounding so harsh. Their work comes really close to being something great, but little usability and design mistakes keeping it from getting there. However, each home they build is better than the previous one, so I’m watching closely!)

I’ve been designing and building tiny dwellings of all sorts all my life, and looking at the designs of others, and so far, this is one of my favorites…everyone will have preferences of their own, and there are certain constraints which come from building on a trailer and keeping it road legal…and there is always a compromise between aesthetic and function…adding architectural interest sometimes comes at the cost of usable space. I think this one hits a very good balance…and i even like the purple….with all the natural wood, i think the bath is a perfect place to go for some bold color…or course, it could easily be changed according to taste. Great job in my humble opinion…

Wow. This pretty much sums it up to EXACTLY what we want to build. Nice that there are two sleeping lofts to accommodate a tiny family of three.

    March 19, 2013, 6:17 pm

I agree with Erik Markus above on the windows in particular. Cheap looking, and too many sizes/shapes.
Also wonder about the composting toilet so close to face height in the bathtub – perhaps switch bathroom sink and toilet placement?

On their website, the dimensions are listed at 27′ long, 9′ wide and 13.5′ high. Seems to be built on a 5th-wheeler trailer, although their website says they use flat-bed trailers for all their designs.

    March 20, 2013, 8:12 pm

    Really beautiful design.
Since the whole floor is above the wheels, and the height in lofts is so spacious, it’s hard to believe that trailer and all is 13 ft 6 in.

  • Charles
    March 23, 2013, 2:19 pm

The stairs definitely make me object less to the sleeping loft.

There must be some better way to store the ladder to the second loft? What a waste of good wall space.

    • Adina Hirschmann
      May 31, 2014, 11:34 pm

Folding attic stairs might do the trick. BTW, if this were a park model, the loft height could be increased to a full second story. Also, handrails are required by code in most municipalities. Nice to see some well done. I would have used a flush toilet and plexiglas shower doors in the bathroom, along with a half-size tub.

  • LaMar
    March 23, 2013, 2:59 pm

Nice staircase but it does take up valuable space in the house. Could be integrated with some more storage space for a laundry room under the stairs.

The second loft is an idea I have included in plans and makes a great place to store you seasonal gear and clothes when not in use.

This would make a nice park model but because of the weight I do not see anyone towing it much.

    March 23, 2013, 7:48 pm

I decided months ago to build my own – so I started getting my plans together. I made notes: why a square door?,why not a narrow staircase rather than a ladder?,why not enough windows to make it bright/espec. dormer windows, skylight? In my ideal – working shutters for at night, inside over the door a custom roller door to lock up when away traveling, inserts in floor for removable telescoping pedestals for dining table (like on a sailboat). Also, a small fold down (wall hinged) table for breakfast. A solar panel to top things off would be icing.

OMG I just fell in love with this tiny house. I can’t believe how much room it has. and the stairs!!! I need stairs. that’s the one thing that has stopped me from even thinking about a house on a trailer, those ladders would kill my back. I LOVE it!! this has just gone to the top of my wish list for when i buy a tiny house.

  • Kelley Chambers
    March 24, 2013, 9:37 pm

This is THE house for me!!! I really, REALLY love this (minus the dark lilac bathroom color choice… icky!). Though I’m confused only on one thing… why is there a pull down ladder when there are stairs??? “Things that make you go… hmmmm!”

    • Kelley Chambers
      March 24, 2013, 9:39 pm

For some reason, the edit button wouldn’t edit. Anyway, I figured it out… it’s for the second loft. Got it!

    • Lonni Baird
      March 25, 2016, 12:09 pm

The movable pull down ladder is for access to the storage loft. The stairs are permanent and are for access to the sleeping loft. I think it would be safer to have a catwalk from one loft to the other, so you can carry things up/down stairs easier.

      • Lonni Baird
        March 25, 2016, 12:11 pm

Oops sorry, didn’t see your edit until now.

      • Maggie
        August 28, 2016, 10:27 am

I too thought a catwalk would be safer, especially if someone uses second loft for sleeping. If second loft is for small children, easy for parents to respond, but maybe not for privacy.
Another thought I have about lofts is, what happens in case of a fire? Plans need to be made for several ways to get out, especially windows in loft big enough to make an exit.

  • Mark
    April 6, 2013, 3:38 pm

This one, in my opinion is a short home run. I agree with previous posters that a standing seam roof much more in fitting, but I love the clear wood. Have you treated it at all, or are you going to let it age?
My biggest concern with true “mobile” trailer tiny houses is wind speed at highway speeds dismantling your hard work. If it’s on a trailer only to skirt the bbuilding codes & permits, I’m all for it, and the composite roof is a good alternative.
Purple is my favorite color, but it looks too trendy for my taste, but “I don’t live there”, and I believe you do what makes you feel good.
Thanks for sharing this with the community!

  • Margaret

  • Ian
    April 10, 2013, 8:50 pm

I like this but think the whole roof is messy. Just extend the shape of the bedroom loft all the way through, cover it with a metal roof. Would be easier to build and cheaper. Just a thought.

  • Susie
    April 10, 2013, 11:41 pm

This is definitely something I could live in for the rest of my life. It is beautiful!
I do have a few concerns. I love that there is so much light streaming in, I think that is one of the most endearing qualities, however, what does that do to the tensile structural strength? If your tiny house is just going to sit on a lot, that is one thing, but let’s face it, one of the benefits of a tiny house on wheels and no mortgage payments is surely traveling around the country. Maybe even further (I have many friends in South America)
I love that it has stairs rather than just a ladder, even if my 50 year old abused knees could continue to handle hauling a$$ up a ladder to sleep in a loft each night, I certainly couldn’t haul my 45lb boxer/pitt cross one. I have only seen stairs on one other model, can’t find them again, they were unique, must have been custom built, but genius- each riser was a drawer front- amazing storage!!
big time kudos on aesthetics!!!!!! I am in love!!!

  • Joel
    July 15, 2013, 4:34 pm

I saw that the stated width was 9 foot. I thought that legally, it cannot exceed 8.5 feet. ?? I love the design, but hate the color. The rounded door top was great. I see a lot of people say that only one door is necessary. Safety wise, I would say that is a bad idea. In case of fire, 2 ways to egress is a must. I lived permanently in a 32′ trailer for 3 years in Florida, and all the units in that RV park had to have 2 doors. I believe this is now my favorite design, but I’m sure the cost would be above my pay grade. Oh well…I can still dream.

    • Joel
      July 15, 2013, 4:51 pm

I forgot to ask what’s the total weight of the house and trailer ??
How big a truck would be needed to pull this baby ?

  • Sandra
    August 1, 2013, 1:45 am

The floor plan is great, but the outside is too dis-jointed. I really don’t care for the exterior at all. It is not very attractive, I don’t even care for the siding. The widows are cheap looking for the price tag of these units and are not consistant in size or placement. I also agree with the person who questioned the hodge podge of materials inside. Planning what you are going to do ahead of time would give the unit more harmony for sure. That said the floor plan inside is very nice.

    Alex,
Who built this house? I am tired of being told we are limited to an 8’6″ width. This is clearly wider which makes the addtl options possible. Also, LOVE the staircase, but the builder needs to provide a better option for storage underneath. With a house that small, every bit of space is priceless.

  • Crissie
    February 23, 2014, 12:31 am

Very unique design! I could totally see using the large loft with a big flat screen tv, and a bunch of different pillows lying around using it as a media room, or even a cozy place to snuggle up and read a good book! The other loft has ample space for sleeping in my opinion, that would leave plenty of space downstairs for a small table and chairs, and also a desk area with even a bookshelf. You could still probably even have room for some sort of seating, a bench maybe, depending on what u were going for. ………..Maybe one day, in the meantime, thank goodness a girl can dream! 🙂

I love this house. I looks and feels very spacious. I much prefer a staircase over a latter. The space has been utilized very well for storage. And I love the purple bathroom. The loft has lots of head space. Everything is very well done. My compliments to the builder.

This house is for sale for 75,000.00! I thought the whole idea for tiny house was not to have a mortgage! For that kind of money where I live I can buy a three bedroom two bath house with a garage and land.

    • Alex
      May 1, 2014, 10:01 am

I hear ya Maria. $75k is ALOT. But we all have to understand and respect how much work is involved in designing and building one of these and that many of the people behind them are professionals who are able to earn good money in their careers. If you want a really affordable home the cheapest way to get one is to build it yourself because of labor or find a used one that isn’t as nice as something like this. That’s one of the reasons I love sharing them. So we can all gather ideas and eventually use them in our own ways.

I like a lot about this house, but a few things bother me.

    1. I’m not a fan of the gabled roof. Of course, it seldom snows where I live, and then very little when it does. Also I dislike so many gables. Too busy.

    2. For us, the kitchen is the heart of the home, so a tiny galley won’t do.

    3. Is it assumed tiny house people never do laundry? There are great washer/dryers and stackable so out there that could be incorporated.

    4. What about AC and heat? I live in southern Louisiana. Air conditioning is crucial.

    5. Finally, I feel like I would hit my head on the cabinet above the toilet when I sat or rose from using the bathroom.

Again, lots of clever use of space and beautiful look, but not really the right mix of function and aesthetic for me.

I just purchased a small house on wheels that needs to be refurbished and finished inside. One thing (of many) that needs replacing is the ladder to the loft area. Since there are two lofts, I would like to find a rail ladder that I can interchange and use for both lofts. Any resources for purchasing this type of ladder? Thanks for the help!

Hey Alex,I bet you don’t publish this,I couldn’t see a space to leave a comment on the WA course on the next page so I’ll write it here. I signed up with WA.
I got ripped off for $350 which they unlawfully took from my account, which my bank finally refunded.

    — Well, leave it to me to be odd man out but I LOVE the purple in the bathroom! I think it goes beautifully with the blonde wood.
    — I think a stair-chair would be a great thing for seniors and I’m sure it could be mounted on the wall.
    — I, too, would like to know the dimensions. Seems to me that it is so big you couldn’t really move it around a lot because you’d run into problems with special licenses to move it.
    — Also prefer storage in the staircase and under it, too. I like the flip top stair treads best; nothing comes loose and tumbles out in transport, with long closets underneath for long coats/dresses/slacks and hanging shoe organizer.
    — Would like a ballpark figure on this to build/own.
    — This also seems to have a lot of wasted open floor space. It it really necessary? Maybe so if you have a family of four living here.
    — Not crazy about the built-in storage spaces; I prefer the pull out slim panel type with the hidden multiple/stacked shelving for spices/glasses/canned goods, and things; it means you don’t have to pack anything when it’s time to move.

Excellent use of space. It appears so BIG. I’d choose differently for finishes, but the design is inspired.

I really love this home, but it seems to me to too big and unwieldy to tow cost effectively. It strikes me as something one would move only once in a while and only as necessary. However, this would make an excellent foundation home, minus the composting toilet and equipped with a normal flush one.

I love the stairs, and this tiny house has almost as much storage space as my 487 sq. foot apartment. LOL Personally, I’d lose the back door for more solid wall space. Love the french doors! Excellent job overall!

As a”senior,” I personally won’t climb a ladder to a loft bedroom or sleep on a mattress on the floor. My “senior” husband and I also want a half bath (you young folks will someday understand). We also don’t want a composting toilet, so I guess we are past our “living off the grid” years when we camped in tents. Our Tiny House is slightly more than 400 feet, and I know these smaller units can’t necessarily accommodate these comforts, but the stairway is a big improvement as well as a great place to put storage. This is very attractive and functional. If the owner likes orchid, hooray for that pop of color.

I really like this design a lot! It looks like you guys use metal framing for the loft support areas, am I correct? Are those 4×4 beams aluminum, or steel? I’d be really interested in getting the plans, but I’d want to stay within the legal road width of 8.5′ rather than 9′. Any chance I could get a copy?

what are the measurements of this house? Where can a kit be purchased?

Ok, this is a cute place and cleverly done but I do not get the big deal about “tiny homes”. Motor homes have been around for many years and use space saving technology plus they’re cheaper and made to travel. What is the appeal here, because in my mind, this has already been done by the RV industry.

Ok. Love it. (ft. wide. Is that a problem to transport, given all the others are 8.5 wide. What about kitchen on one side, bathroom on the other making both spaces less cramped? 5ft out from either side. Making a lovely spot for a kitchen table in the kitchen! Still leaving 16 or 17 &9 sq ft (153 sq feet) open in the center of the house. Add small staircases with storage going to either loft. Perhaps enough room to NOT need to climb the stairs to the loft to go to sleep. Murphy bed in living area? Room for a desk? Mainly storage in lofts. Lofts look great, not all that comfortable for me. pretty house.

My favorite, with exceptions! No back door, perhaps placed where glass doors are currently. Back door entrance area in interior can now be walled off to use as bedroom (same size as loft above)!

Molecule does make some nice tiny homes. I especially like their spacious lofts with stairs. Also, this wood is great. Did I miss what kind it is? Thanks for all the great tiny homes, Alex. Looking at TH is my favorite past-time.

I think this could be awesome with a shed roof. The stairs lose their utility when you have to crouch to keep from hitting your head. The trim pieces around widows and shelving look cheap. I like the extra storage in the kitchen walls – but it could use something to keep stuff from falling off the shelves. And purple? really? A deep green or navy or some other pastel would look better. The second loft ceiling would also benefit from a shed roof…

I really really like this one. I appreciate the railing as I do fall down a lot these days and the space upstairs allows several ways to place bed which is good and the layout is comfortable. Thanks for sharing this

Lovely home. Nice size loft and what could be more fun than painting your favorite color over the purple?

Beautiful house! Love the stairs. A little bigger than most tiny houses.
I’d nickname it “The Bacon House”, for the exterior kind of reminds me of bacon strips! LOL

I like it but I would skip the secondary lift so I could have a more spacious feel in the kitchen and bathroom

Wow I love this one totally. The color purple wouldn’t be my choice but it can always be chanced. This is roomy and looked great all around.

I love every thing, but the purple , and pink paint… I’m guessing that the new owner had requested it , and found it a shock to the senses for sure.. But compared to the creative thinking that went into the rest of the house …! The house is really something to look at with the new innovative stair railing that has been added to the design, and the house’s interior main area between stairs and ladder show how vast the interior really is.. A truly larger house for those who are looking to house a family, I would think…!

When I first saw this Tiny on tinyhousetalk.com, I was instantly in love. But back then (4 years ago) I was a lurker rather than a commenter. Now I can say how terrific I think this Tiny is! Love the kitchen, the storage stairs, the size of the sleeping loft, the extra “back” door, the excellence of the workmanship, but I do have to say no to a purple bathroom LOL! But its still at the top of my list of Tinies I could live in!
