$3k Modern DIY Tiny House Using Tumbleweed XS House Plans

This post contains affiliate links.

This tiny house is called the Tiny HaHa House

The owner built it for just $3,000 in materials and did nearly all of the work himself.

It’s Jay Shafer‘s XS tiny house design except it has a covered porch modification.

And they added two roof windows which I really like.

I think it has a little bit of a modern look to it too, don’t you think?

The XS is just 65-square-feet without including the upstairs sleeping loft.

The siding and roofing is corrugated aluminum, kinda like the one Jay showcases in his book.

Carpeting was used on the interior and the interior walls seem like painted plywood panels, but I think it looks good. Modern, even.

One of the reasons this project was so inexpensive is because there is no kitchen or bathroom in the design, although it can always be added. In this situation, you can always consider the appliances/products below to make your life easier:

Alternatively, you can use a structure like this as an office or a hobby room instead of as a home.

As you can tell he used carpet for the flooring which keeps it simple and inexpensive. The door is just the right size and has a great style to it.

The black and silver accents throughout gives it a modern look, doesn’t it?

Sort of nice… the price is right for sure.. But what can one do with this.. there is no bathroom or kitchen facilities..With the metal roofing and siding I would think it would be a magnetic for a thunder and lighting storm LOL…

Thanks for posting my house on your blog! 🙂
I did this to inspire others to be more free and happy with “less”, or to re-evaluate “more”. I call this my retirement home. I can’t waste anymore of my time energy doing what I don’t enjoy. Never was very good at that. I didn’t want to make it too intimidating looking so that people would see they could do it themselves or w a few friends in a few weeks. I don’t need a permit cause it’s considered a toy. Found the trailer off craigslist for $850. It was a boat trailer. Get a permanent license BEFORE u build something on it tho. Found all the 2×4’s from construction junk bins. Everything else from the habitat for humanity restore or lowes. I didn’t want a bathroom or a kitchen in it. Just a simple furniture free Japanese space. I eat mostly fruits anyhow so don’t need a kitchen. There is a loft in it to stare at stars/ watch the sun come up. I have a $15 Walmart rug on top and bottom w a camping sleep pad under it (2). I sleep on a blanket over the rug / camp mat. Downstairs in the summer, upstairs in winter. I run a cord out to it and run a heater w a temp gauge on it w auto shut off. Everything is insulated so it retains heat/ cool well. Barely use any energy. My computer is my iPhone. Have almost all my books on my iphone.I have a fan in the top window that keeps things very cool. Also have it in the shade. Love llistening to the rain. The house is grounded so no worries on electrical storms. It’s survived a few hurricanes, even some earthquakes. I have it up on cinder blocks. The metal has a hundred year life on it. I used an old road sign for the window bases so it never rots.

Now Im a homeowner and have the time to do what I want. I have a bike hook inside to store it and ride that mostly. Just outside the city. Most people are pretty supportive of it. It’s my solution to wage slavery and debt and think its a great one

🙂 good luck and feel free to contact me on Facebook if u have any questions. <3

Hey, Andrew. Darling house! Your live-style is unique and it’s obviously a delicious fit for yourself. I applaud you for something that I think escapes most posters: a HUGE congratulation on ditching the mountain of BOOKS that almost 100% of Tiny House folks insist on cluttering up their tiny footprint with! I just don’t get it: they go on and on and on about “decluttering” and owning a couple of shirts and two pairs of pants but then they take up a vast amount of storage space with BOOKS!

I went 99.9% digital over 5 years ago. All my books are on my Kindle or tablet (Samsung) and 100% of my music is on my laptop and backed up on the Cloud. My husband and I actually sold the 4 teak bookcases for a tidy sum, that held all of our books on it, ebayed the books and CD’s and used the money to take a nice vacation in San Francisco. 🙂 So kudos to you for truly and honestly living the minimalist life-style. It’s not mine, but I can appreciate it.

By the way, do you rent out space for your home from someone? You mention that you use an extension cord but to WHERE? I’ve seen several homes on wheels where the people talk about living for FREE, but they’re always parked on someone’s land. Also, like Dee Williams, do you use someone else’s shower and laundry? Just curious, not judging in any way. If you have a barter system with them, then that’s cool.

    Thanks for sharing!

1: Laundry: They have a small manual washer you can use
2: Shower: Can use tiny mobile style
      3: Power: Can use solar

      Hope this helps!

Whats the dry weight of your XS house? And would a V8 dakota be able to tow one?

Who could live in it without a bathroom and a kitchen?

Ok, one can eat out, or eat fruit without a kitchen.
But no bathroom ? ? When you gotta go, you gotta go.
At least, it works that way for me.

I celebrate anybody who is able to live happily with less. I would not be able to live this small, but, everyday, I try and think of ways to live simpler, with less.
