Modern and Luxurious Tiny A-frame Cabin in Waiheke Island

This post contains affiliate links.

This $695,000 tiny A-frame cabin is modern and luxurious. The home and property offers amazing views with a wonderful outdoor spa.

Located on Waiheke Island, in New Zealand, it’s definitely a one-of-a-kind property. From here you can take a three minute drive to the beach, a nearby shopping village, or the grocery store.

The pricing definitely doesn’t fall in line with the word affordable, but the inspiration it offers costs us nothing, right? So I’m still excited to bring it to your attention. And if you are financially wealthy and want to downsize, this is an awesome option, isn’t it?

Waiheke Island’s coolest pad is now on the market. The cathedral-like glass front entrance will inspire you and tempt you inside the cool white, modern interior. It’s not a bach in any conventional sense it’s more like the experience of living within a work of art. There is a mezzanine bedroom with stunning views through the native bush and an open plan kitchen and dining area leading out to a large deck that is perfect for entertaining guests. Close by, the spa pool is set amongst the native bush and is the ultimate way to relax with a glass in hand of one of the lovely local wines at the end of the day. The location is outstanding, being less than three minutes drive to beautiful Palm Beach, a short stroll to Ostend village and the market on Saturday and the local supermarket as well. When the owners are not there, the property is also rented as holiday accommodation and achieves a very enviable nightly rate. Designed and built by award-winning designer Chris Tate and featuring in this month’s Urbis magazine, ‘The Fin’ is perfect for those who appreciate cool aesthetics and a really convenient lock-up and leave weekender.

While I can totally appropriate the quality of this home if I were planning to spend that kind of money it wouldn’t be on an A-frame.

I always love the way they look from the outside but the inability to make truly good use of space that’s inherent in an A-frame and lack of Windows always gets to me.

Looks like a white-out inside. Not much on design or color.

I love A frame houses but this is way over priced. You can build one for less than one third of this price.

I’m as insane for A-Frames as Alex but I’ll take a pass on this one. The sheer lack of windows makes my skin crawl. ~shiver~

While the design is beautiful, the lack of color and warmth makes me shiver.

This appeals to minimalist in me. I really like it and even tho there are not windows , there is great light source from the glass front. Very nice.

    Amount Swap Convert another pair

It’s possible that the price was quoted in New Zealand dollars. If so, the price in U.S. Dollars comes in at under half a million. Yeah, like that makes a difference. I’m guessing that even the bare lot price would be out of sight for most of us.

    695,000.00 NZD = 470,899.11 USD
    1 NZD = 0.6776 USD

Price is outlandish, but it is really cool. I could see this being built so it could fold up to be used as portable housing or settlements in space. It seems very “tomorrow.”

It’s too bright it’s burning me retina’s, no warmth or color like Sally said.
I’d rather ride my skateboard through it 😉

Does it come with a cleaning robot? That’s a lot of white to keep nice. It does make keeping track of invading creepy crawlies easier.

well, i see windows, and not just the front ones. the design of this place is exquisite, pristene. lacking visual noise, and isn’t that what some people want in a relaxing environment? this way, all the entertainment comes from the people and naseen and felt. ture around you, maybe books (in many forms, and, your own thoughts. now. practical? maybe not for those whose needs are better suited to color, texture,or more of a sense of visible and tangible richness . thanl you alex, for this post. beautiful.

Mein Gott, that is one fugly house.

In an effort to remain positive and uplifting, however, I CAN say it has a lovely deck, and though I’d never, ever use it – a lovely hot tub as well. I’m sure the view is second to none, although in an effort to get someone to part with that much dough you’d think they’d offer a pic of it. Maybe they have some on the real estate listing. I do kind of like the ship’s prow profile.

On the other hand, the rug (what is that? Kangaroo? Wallaby? Giant Mutant Koala?) has GOT to go.

No kangaroos in New Zealand. No wallabies or koalas in New Zealand. These animals are from Australia! SMH! This is a cowhide! Surely even an American knows what a cow looks like???

Thanks for the free to view post Alex.
Whilst I couldn’t live in this as is – like others I need colour and texture and some belongings – I do see some useful structure/layout ideas.
The way the bathroom is set behind the kitchen which in turn allows connection, separate space and traffic flow.
The forward overhang protecting from strong sun and rain is a good thought.
Yes, designed for those with more money than sense but still a good design. Cosmetic finishes are easy to adjust.

I LOVE it. The older I get the more I desire a simple clean exterior and interior.

way too much money for a tiny home.but the pricing on houses nowadays especially in NZ is insane

I like the design on this a lot; I think it’s very well done, but I’d have to put some color splashes in there and definitely get rid of the poor dead animal on the floor. The selling price is beyond my means, but I want to move to Oregon, not New Zealand, so I’m safe there.

I used to love A-frames. Then I bought one and moved in. Lannette is right. No place to hang my art work. I’ve lived here (large house) 10 years and am planning on a tiny rural house very soon!

Interesting variation on the “A-Frame”. Love the floor plan. The winding staircase is beautiful and provides a very appealing divider between the kitchen and living area. Square footage? Does the price include part of the island? 😉

wow, that’s the kiwi’s for you. they do classy style and this a-frame has it by the truck load. there’s alot of expensive finishes and that certainly brings up the cost. beautiful spot to have a tiny house.

I’m divided on this one. First look at the interior and the first thought in my head was “soul sucking”. That’s how it felt looking through the interior. I tried to put that thought aside and concentrate on the layout. The layout is not bad. I just can’t get past the soulessness of the whole thing.

Who cares about the fricking rug? The design looks great and it looks like it could even be split level as the roof ridge seems to dive down at a steep angle, although the photos are indistinct. Interior decoration is a bit too minimalist as there is little spatial effect because of the limited dimensions, but otherwise very engaging and inspirational ideas here, and definitely worth a more extensive photographic review, particularly of the exterior.

Nice clean set for a science fiction movie. We love it or hate it. Easy enough to add some color. Kind of shows off the nature this way though, by contrast. I do miss Cahow…

I’m not crazy about A Frames but this one is kind of cool. The walls are painted a soft white while the floor is a gloss white, I’m thinking epoxy coated concrete? This keep it very bright, necessary due to a lack of dispersed windows. Which again is what I like about it in contrast to the typical a frame with wooden walls.

Looking at the outside this is an unusual A Frame design, more of a half pyramid and I like the sloping roof line.

All that being said, there is no way this house cost anywhere near the listed price to build. It’s maybe 600 sq. ft? The walls are simply sheet-rock, the floors are painted concrete. The only thing that could be expensive is the glass. I’m thinking maybe 150k to build one yourself? The land it sits on may very well have cost much more.

Still, a nice design, for an A-Frame.
