Man Lives The Simple Life in Minimalist Tiny Cabin

I ran into this at the tiny houses category over at Reddit and just had to share it with you.

This is one man’s tiny cabin for minimalist living in the Smokies.

It was originally bought as a getaway cabin in the mountains.

At about 570 sq. ft. with an open floor plan and a great location… I think it’s a great place to live simply in… How about you?

You can check out the rest of the cabin (and read the rest of the story) below:

Couch and Fireplace (Sure beats TV)

I’d much rather get to watch the fireplace than TV just about any day. This is a great spot for reading, chilling, etc.

I like how it’s an open floor plan with no separation although I’d do it differently if I were living here with others. But man oh man what an awesome little cabin to live the simple life in. It’s almost like a modern-day Thoreau cabin… Only the necessities (plus computer and Internet!).

I love this place! Especially with the open floor plan! I love rustic cabins and this would be perfect. I prefer open floor plans.

That fireplace is great! Very pretty little cabin. And very Thoreau like.

Minimalist living, you say, Alex? LOL

When I opened up the link, I was expecting a “less than 100 sq.ft. home with a jug of water and an empty soda bottle as the “loo”. Instead, I see a lovely, expansive and quite roomy home, complete with 1) flat screen TV; 2) complete computer system; 3) ?Bluetooth speaker? 4) killer fireplace; 5) even more killer front porch; 6) extremely comfortable bed that’s NOT in a loft; and 7) what looks like a large screened in porch under the cabin.

Minimalist? If so, sign me UP! 😉

Agree after so many teeny tiny homes on wheels or water this looks very roomy. Interesting how your perspective can be changed.
I do love this one though. I always yearned for a log cabin.

What goes a long way if this cabins favor is it is NOT cluttered with extra “stuff” just what is needed and not over decorated to death. job well done. Nice, simple, and clean lines. comfy and cozy .

    BEEEEE UUUUU TTTTTT FUL!!!!!!

One of the areas we are considering moving to!!!!

I think that the underside is a foundation—there looks to be a small window or port next to the R side of the porch—would come in handy for the pesky things we do seem to need and want esp if there is no shed or garage.

One of the things that I think about—we do almost all of the work on our cars; bike etc and often do work for friends rellies etc. We are far too old and have far too many tools to toss in a canvas bag-and we are not crawling around in the mud! So–we need a garage. All fine n good to say “Oh just use public transport”—invariably this is some City Born person who has no clue that the buses and trains and Town Cars don’t exactly COME here!

And as a person with a handicap—I need to be able to have a car I KNOW I can get in and out of easily and haul the scooter I need for long walking situations—-

Things you don’t think about until this becomes your reality.

If Thoreau were alive today and living in his cabi I have o doubt he would have solar or wind power for lights, internet and probably a cell phone. He was an avid writer, layman scientist and researcher and is said to be very social often traveling miles to town to hang out at the pub. he was also a social activist and those are all enhanced by having internet.

That being said I do not see this as a minimalist cabin which generally would be much smaller with just the bare necessities. My own cabin has been referred to as minimalist in articles and I have had to correct people because I have all the same luxuries of a large house including indoor plumbing, electric lights, internet, cell phone, TV, microwave and washer and dryer. I just power all that stuff with solar and wind and I use that to run a business so I have no monthly utility bills.

I do like the fireplace but would have liked to see more of the cabin. looks like a typical rental cabin in a national park.

I don’t think the interior shots are for this cabin. Where would the double glass sliding door be located. The door on the exterior shot is completely different. Great fireplace – but where is the chimney, or stove pipe ? The windows don’t match up either to the exterior shot. Is it just me, or is this actually two different cabins?

Well, if you assume the door shown in the interior photo is on the back side of the cabin (perhaps with a deck) then the one window seems to match up with the exterior shot. And the chimney might be hidden by the roof peak (although living in FL, I admit to not knowing much about fireplaces and chimney heights).

You can see the top of the chimney in the first picture on the far side corner of the house roof. The other door is off the back of the house.

I see just tip of the chimney ( stove pipe) On the rear far side of the house. The door you see in the photo is at the rear of the house. The windows match! The walls are thick which makes them look different on the inside.

What? Wait….computer and internet are not necessities? 🙂

Sorry Alex but 570 sq feet is not tiny and two desks is not minimalist…

Who is deciding what is minimalist and what isn’t?
In a remote area internet is for me a feature should have for communication and entertainment.
The size of a home doesn’t matter. It depends where the owner is coming from and what he is in need of.
I personally don’t lie to live in a cramped space. That’s why I lke open floor plans and if somebody is an author or loves to write letters a second desk isn’t a luxury.

Alex, any clues on where the desk came from? Is that an Ikea also? Thank you for all the work you do in showing us everything, you help to keep my dreams alive. Thank you to the rest of you too, your comments, and hints on things and even questions help as well. Hubby is not into tiny house styles. Still, I keep dreamin. 🙂 hehehe

This tiny house is wonderful!!!! I lost my house and had to downsize into an upstairs garage/barn apartment. It too is one huge room and am liking the simple things so much. I am really tired of trying to keep up and this suits me so much better!! My son and I have almost completed my space with mostly second hand building things my son has gotten off of jobs. We had a very, very limited budget but it is turning out so cozy and homey!!! I love it so far!!!
