Mini 16ft Tiny House with All the Comforts of Home – Video Tour

This tiny house is built on a short 16-foot trailer but it feels surprisingly spacious inside with a huge galley kitchen on the main floor and a queen sized bed in the upstairs loft.

Lumbec built this tiny home, La Nautique, as their first tiny house prototype.  They added extra square footage to the home by building out onto the triangular space at the front of the trailer, which created some “bonus” space for a cozy living room/dining room area.

In the center of the tiny house there’s a surprisingly spacious galley kitchen with tons of counter space, and ample storage beneath the countertops. There is an instant hot water heater that heats water for both the kitchen sink and the shower but there’s no water tank in this house, so it would need to be hooked up to city water.  The house is heated with a small Dickinson Marine heater.

The bathroom is the one room where the team ran into some design problems. Since they wanted the tiny house to be livable in all 4 seasons, they wanted to keep all of the plumbing and the grey water tank inside the insulated building envelope to prevent the pipes and the grey water tank from freezing in the winter. You’ll see that the shower is a step up off the floor and that there isn’t actually enough space to stand up in it yet (it is a prototype after all!).  They’re planning to remedy this by raising the ceiling directly above the shower, and using the raised surface this creates in the loft as a bedside table.

A well thought out design (and yeah, I like the afterthought of a built in table/shower bump) and beautiful wood throughout. I would want a 3 burner stove and am afraid that stainless steel counter tops will scratch easily but other than that this is the first tiny home I’ve really liked! Thanks for sharing it.

Very nice job on your test home, but I hope you dialed in the most important factor which is keeping the price down to where it will be affordable to those who like it as well….

On the whole, I like this idea, but I think I’d want a longer trailer, at least 24′. I also appreciate the explanation of the Japanese stairs (I’d seen them many times but didn’t know the origin)–I’m one of those who’d start with my left foot…

I didn’t see the refrigerator. Did I miss something?

Japanese stairs? Hmm, where I come from they are known as ships stairs. Used for aeons on ships to save space and to make it far safer to use. Was even some discussions on this 3 or 4 years or so back here on tinyhousetalk.com… sure Alex would recall.

This one really makes it. The refrigerator is on right side of sink under the counter. I’m about 6 Tiny Homes I’m considering And adding this one to the list .

Yes, the refrigerator is an underbench model on the far left of where the cooktop is.

Too small for me personally… I’d need a standard size refrigerator with a freezer at the bottom to work “for me.”

For me or any one else that is disabled, not being able to stand up in the shower is not a big deal. In fact I use a 5 gal. bucket to sit on. I have a really bad back and cannot stand for very long periods of time, like in a shower. you could use one of the shower shells with a built in seat.

Love your ideas for this tiny home! You seemed to have thought of everything! Great job! Love the idea regarding your living room how your using the triangle effect along with the storage solution. I also like that you can move the table to accomidate if you are entertaining guests. Also pretty ingenious to think of having sliding windows up in the loft area in case you want to get rid of your mattress or if you have something large you want to put up there. Enjoyed viewing your tiny home and looking at all of your awesome ideas! Thank you for sharing!????

Hi Allin, this looks like a prototype, which means it’s not necessarily being mass-produced yet. You can contact the builder (Lumbec) on their website, though, for more info. It looks like this is the page about the design: http://www.tinyhouselumbec.com/protototype/

    I like the design!

Do You have room for a washer/dryer in the kitchen?

And being disabled, I could not climb those stairs, often. Is there a plan to make a Murphy Bed downstairs, by any chance?

    • Natalie
      December 22, 2016, 7:36 am

Not sure about either, I’m afraid. Might not be roomy enough for a washer/dryer, but you might be able to add a Murphy bed. — Tiny House Talk Team

I like the tiny house…I have an idea for that corner area, if you’re open.
There are corner table units where 2 benches fit into that point,
with seating that opens far extra storage, then the table to size and another bench to slip under table when not used. If custom built; that table could be a drop down table for creating extra sleeping for yourself or visitors.
Anyways Tiny Houses are the answer for less is better living, to enjoy a better life.
    Thanks for sharing your home.

I’m always interested in THOWs under 20′. This one, at 16′, is particularly well done in that I really thought it was a 20-footer. I totally love the breaker box behind the spice cabinet. Where I live now, when I blow a breaker, I have to go outside and around the house to reach the box; at night in the dead of winter (yuk!) And I love the way the hot water heater is so nicely contained in the counter; no ugly spots in the house. And I am someone who would be interested in solar panels, so the fact that there is battery accommodations already and waiting is another plus. I’d like to have some kind of water (collection) tank under the counter on the other side behind another metal door. I’d want a w/d combo, though. I’d like to see that get figured in; maybe in the bathroom in a box above the commode? You’ve got some very attractive design appointments going in this THOW. I encourage you to continue to develop your ideas because there are people like me who are very interested in what you are doing. Thanks for sharing! 🙂
