Man Turns Work Van Into DIY Motorhome Tiny Cabin

This post contains affiliate links.

Right now I’m showing you how this man, Dipa Vasudeva Das, turned a high-top cargo van into a beautiful tiny cabin on wheels. He calls it his EarthShip.

It’s a DIY motorhome project that in my opinion has an Asian and Yogic style to it. I think it’s very well done so I wanted to share it with you for inspiration.

I was also able to get in touch with Dipa and pretty soon he’ll be putting together a website about his DIY camper projects. Yes, he’s converted more than one. Please enjoy and re-share below.

He turned this ordinary work van into an incredible zen motorhome that’s completely custom…

    Nicely done. Serious stove envy!

Wow! Very beautiful. Love the wood everywhere, such a contrast to the outside of the van. I’m wondering if there’s a toilet tucked away somewhere? Also wondering what is done with the stovepipe when on the move? It’s amazing how livable it is in a truly tiny space.

    Wow! Very nice.
The wooden interior makes me think of all the wood I have in a (and my) sailboat, especially older one’s, that give it an older traditional look.
Well made and looks like there’s lots of storage too.

Wow… those first pictures gave me a vision of an extremely oversize coffin due to the shape. LOL

Yeah yeah, I know, gotta go and get some counselling.

Did love the woodwork designs though. Very bohemian like. But for me I just can’t see me living in something like this.

But kudos to the designer and builder of this. Definitely outside of the square that’s for sure.

Well, coffins don’t usually have skylights and other windows, or doors that open to the sunshine, or a windshield. (-::-).

As you say, not usually. Conversely that is saying that sometimes they do… lol

Yes such as Timothy Clark Smith’s safety coffins. Converse that. ?

Some very cool work on the interior. But to call this project some new is incorrect. Those in the hobby of building custom vans have been doing this 40 years. I’m also wondering about the chimney pipe.

Beautiful space. What type of wood stove/fireplace did he use?

Loving your sleeping roll, did you make it? I presume this is what you sleep on. I also presume that you store it away in the floor opening? Very clever. What kinds of bikes are those? I didn’t see where the wood stove was actually functioning, as in, hooked up to flue and a back draft (or whatever you call it), i’ll look again !

Absolutely gorgeous. We also live (part time) in a converted Sprinter and we just love it. It’s not as exquisitely put together as this one is, though.

It looks great – good job. Especially the double floor is a great idea it keeps the weight down where it belongs. Wood is still the best for a
healthy living. The roll up futons are great, too.
It doesn’t appear like an RV which is very good when you don’t like
    to stay on campgrounds.
Unfortunately, I am tall and I guess standing headroom wouldn’t be sufficient for me. The foldout bathroom isn’t for regular use and wood
doesn’t like to get wet very often. I have not seen a toilet.

    Otherwise its very nice.

I’ve no words that can fully express how impressed I am with this beautiful home and concept in general. I long to do something for myself that can be obtained and sustained thru the rest of my life’s journey…
I am nearing 60 yrs of age and so want to simplify things..
may I get a link to follow you ? or would that be imposing? .. Mary

I think you created a nice soft place to fall…
Once upon a time I owned a Sprinter cargo van to work for a transport company that over promised, however under delivered on our contract.
What I did to make it livable while living in it, not spending money in hotels, is I had blown insulation on the walls to keep tight and soundproofed and an Espar heater so not to run the engine to keep warm. I hired a tech. to put a vent fan on the roof and additional lighting. I bought a small portable toilet and several window tinfoil coverings. Also a super single collapsible bed frame and sheepwool mattress that I could bunjy cord to the wall when transporting loads. A couple of the old fashioned card tables to use and my laptop to watch movies while dining before I slept. I loved it. It’s not for everybody but things would have worked out nicely if transport companies could stay honest with expectations, so not to mislead those of us that flip the bill.
Your craftsmanship is nicely done and I see well thought out.
Safe travels and all the best, thanks for sharing your story.

Once upon a time I owned a Sprinter cargo van to work for a transport company that over promised, however under delivered on our contract.
What I did to make it livable while waiting for another load, not spending money in hotels, is I had a company blow foam insulation on the walls to keep van warmer or cooler, and soundproofed, and an Espar heater so not to run the engine during the colder evenings.
I hired a tech. to put a vent fan on the roof and additional lighting.
I bought a small portable toilet.
Walmart sells tinfoil window coverings that are so light and very easy to use. Also a super single collapsible bed frame and sheeps-wool mattress that I could bunjy cord to the wall when transporting loads.
I came across a couple of the old fashioned card tables to use and was able to enjoy my laptop to watch movies while dining before I slept.
This WiFi is great to catch up on emails and search online while grabbing breakfast at McDonald’s, Tim Horton’s…I loved it.
It’s not for everybody but things would have worked out nicely if transport companies could stay honest with earning expectations,
so not to mislead those of us that flip the bill.
Your craftsmanship is nicely done and I say this with great respect to you living a lifestyle that is free from government and also you not leaving such a footprint on the planet. I see you have thought this life out well for yourself and are a free person. If I see you sometime on our roads, I will try to catch up to say Hello.
Safe travels and all the best, thanks for sharing your story.

Beautiful! I love every inch of it. The under floor storage for your sitar is very clever, as are the pull out drawers under the door. The sleeping mats make so much more sense than trying to have a western style mattress in a little camper. That it rolls up for storage or rolls up partway for comfortable seating is a plus!

This van is gorgeous, I particular like the sleep system, I have planned a traditional Japanese bed system for my van. Leaves more space during the day for yoga when weather does’nt cooperate for outdoor practice.

Beautiful work. However I think there are a LOT of us who if we had the 25K for the van could make any number of arrangements. It’s sort o like starting with a huge square nugget and being surprised you can make a bracelet.
