Heart of It All House: 224 Sq. Ft. Tiny hOMe

This is a guest post by Trevor Gay @heartofitallhouseshare your tiny house!

Much like everyone else who’s built their own home or Tiny House, it’s a bittersweet feeling to see the project come to completion. So many long nights and weekends of pouring your family, your friends, and your own blood, sweat, and tears into a project– that it finally comes to life.

After nearly 5 years of contemplation between layouts, designs, and even if the lifestyle was right…. We finally found hOMe. I had stumbled across the Morrison’s house and without a doubt, knew immediately that their house was the closest thing to what I had been searching for.

We literally counted down the seconds for the plans to be released on the TinyHouseBuild.com website. My girlfriend at the time (now fiancé) Mary and I sat a table in our local EarthFare to buy the plans. We bought our trailer from the kind family at Tennessee Tiny Homes in October, and started the build 1 week before Christmas 2014.

I’ve been involved in all sorts of building projects, mostly things associated with bicycles and skateparks- this would be the first home build I laid my hands on. Fortunately for us, I have a wonderful jack-of-all father, Gary, who is experienced with just about everything and would lead us through the construction phases of our house. And if dad wasn’t around, mom (Barb) and Mary were there to always make sure we were moving forward.

After 22 weeks of building after work, before work, during vacation days, the weekend….. and anywhere else we could fit time in- we’re “done” and living in the “Heart Of It All House.” It still feels surreal and I can’t believe it turned out just like we had imagined. We still have some things to tune in and finish up, but I just wanted to share our finished build and part of the journey.

It looks great and the kitchen has terrific counter space, the bathroom has enough room to have a seat, the bed even has headroom and space for a proper mattress. If there is any quibble it is that there is really not enough living space – one bench seat and a built in counter/table for two means that there isn’t room for very many people. But I’d love to have the source information on the outside door lights. Love it though!

Hey! Our outside lights came from LampsPlus.com – there are a ton of great options on there. We absolutely love these lights.

Congratulations, EVERYONE involved in creating this hOme! <3

Wow, what an incredibly rustic home.
So many familiar elements in this place. I almost feel as if I’ve been here before!
The basic structure is quite reminescent of a house I see in a nearby town, except that house has all glass on one side.
The dark wood treatment gives me a sense of a “1970’s Nordic” thing (and who better to judge than the guy who grew up in “Little Norway”).
I almost feel like putting on a white knit sweater, just looking at it!
One curious design element I see is the little shelf over the doorway.
Does anyone know its purpose? It almost seems like its meant to direct the flow of air coming out of the A/C unit above it.
Anyway, wonderful home. I like the little sign too about things tasting better.
We should all have one of those hanging in our own tiny houses. =)

My best guess regarding the shelf and the hanging bridge above the kitchen entrance is that they’re for the cat. They would enable kitty to perch high up and also make its way to/from the ladder loft.

        THAT’S IT!
Of course! Thanks Cheryl. I completely forgot about the cat!

with all the tiny houses that I have looked at this I think is my all time favorite for square footage…he did a great job in designing, decorating, etc….

    Good Job

Nice job. What kind of toilet is that? Composting? Incinerator?

Outstanding job, just love the mix of light and dark on the inside. I’m afraid, the dark exterior would get awfully hot down here in Texas.

Great job you have done! I love the setting you have chosen to place your TH in. It looks very natural nestled into the trees! And I hope your cat knows how lucky it is!

I love the layout on this THOW. The stairs, the catwalk, the spacious yet homey feel of the whole place; really nice. I would love to know where to get those pendant lights; totally awesome. I would also love to know the overall dimensions of the build. Great job, guys; this one really rings the bell! ;D

I have seen some pendant lights very similar to these on Global Market website. If you look on Pinterest there are many similar pendants where to find them.

I absolutely loved this home. It is just a little bigger than most but offers so much more space. Really a great space. Just wondered if it was road worthy at all or if all you could do is move something like this to your spot and leave it.

I see you are an avid cyclist. Where do you store your bike? (I also ride and worry about this part of the equation when living in a tiny house). Beautiful nest!!!

I LOVE this house. I am a huge fan of the original hOMe but I like the look of this one better. It’s actually the only design I have seen that I only want to make minor changes to. I also like the Music City tiny home as it reminds me of this one.

I would likely put in a tub instead of just a shower, and get a smaller bathroom sink so that I’d still have room to fit one of those portable washer/dryer units. I am not a fan of the all-in-ones. I’d sacrifice a few other things to make the table slightly longer. My boyfriend and I both have desktop computers with dual screens.

Yeah, you could totally put in one of those walk-in tubs. It would fit quite nicely!

I could tell this was a cat-friendly design before I realized you had a cat. This is a mobile, mini, rectangular version of the “apple barn” house from “The Cat Who ….” books that I’ve always wanted to build. Nice job!

This is just absolutely beautiful ….and cat-friendly (cat-crazy too). Love everything about it. I like the way they designed the bottom step. It’s just a small detail but it increases the floor space and adds a little pizzaz. Every little detail counts. Now this, defines “pride in ownership.”! Congratulations! Your hard work more than paid off. I’m jealous. 😉
cats rule (it’s a ‘cat person’ thing. :D)

Love this TH! Very well done, the only addition I’d make is a rail for the stairs because I am a klutz.

Quite lovely .. How about a couch instead of a bench, though.
I realized that the odd shaped shelf in the bathroom was a cat shape! Duh. 🙁

Love the layout. Bathroom on one end and kitchen on the other. It doesn’t get any better than that. Great job. I don’t have any animals myself but I love that cat walk.

This design is one of my favs. Kitchen under sleeping loft & bath under “lounge” loft. Storage steps. Tons of storage. Definitely on my short list.

I think this is a pretty nice unit for the money. It has alot of sq. footage, and feels pretty spacious thanks to the high windows. My only concern is that I’m not sure how practical the boxed in couch and desk area is and think it could become a little tiresome. And I’m not sure how I feel about all the empty space above. Otherwise I think it’s very attractive and the reclaimed lumber is very hOMy!

Your home is really beautiful. Can I ask what wood stain you used? Trying to find something similar for my own place 🙂

I like it. The combination of materials and layout of the space, make it a peasantly elegant atmosphere.

Another great example which shows that a decent kitchen can be achieved when putting bathroom and kitchen on opposite ends.
For me its a bit dark and in FL more white would be a better choice.
    Well done!

Very lovely home. The only change for me would be to put doors on storage space under the stairs. I sure that’s just me, I just don’t like things being exposed.

A great build…! And I am so happy that he had shared his experience of this build with us…. It has to be very self rewarding when completing your Tiny House and then walking everyone through it’s phases of construction to show what it was like when he had experienced it and the results of it all…!
