Funny Tiny House Video: Portlandia Tiny House Living Satire

This post contains affiliate links.

Have you ever watched the television show called Portlandia? Well, recently, they did a funny tiny house living satire which if you like humor like I do, you might get a few laughs out of it (even though they’re kind of poking fun at micro homes which is okay, right?). They visited America’s first official Tiny House Hotel in Portland to film the skit.

I always like to mention how tiny living isn’t for everyone (especially if you have to share your tiny house with somebody else). And in this one minute and thirty second clip of this Portlandia episode, you’ll get to see some funny reasons why it just doesn’t work out for some people (more specifically, couples and families).

Sharing a tiny house isn’t always easy. And if you’ve shared a small space with someone before, you know how funny daily moments can be. This video will definitely make that point while probably making you laugh too. So get your sense of humor out then please enjoy the video below and re-share it if you’d like to at the bottom. Thanks!

Lots of people feel this way. But since I downsized my stuff in my little 1,000 sq ft home, some are starting to ‘get it’ and ask me more questions. They wonder if they can do this, too. Closets that are not packed to capacity, finding everything easier, drawers not bulging and buying less, especially food as I only buy what we will be cooking for 3 days at a time. These friends are starting to see things differently.

    Yeah….no thanks.
This video is exactly the visual form of what I hear from whiny folk who lack the courage to try a different way of life and get rid of excess STUFF. In fact, I had two people use this video as their reason why tiny homes are a bad idea. Sooooo tired of whiners.

To the first two commenters (your names are already posted), you need to grow a sense of humor!!! I have a tiny house, as do many people on this thread, but your seriousness (as if this were a news commentary) and defensiveness of your lifestyle choice in the face of PURE GOOD-NATURED SATIRE seems to indicate that you’re actually really insecure about your decisions. Why not laugh? It’s hysterical! …and people who are truly confident in themselves and their tiny lifestyles and choices will also find it incredibly funny – with just the right touch of snarky reality!

I thought living tiny was supposed to be freeing, yet it seems to have instead shackled some defensive people who are actually ashamed and unable to chuckle at their own unique quirkiness. Who cares what anyone else thinks, as long as YOU ARE HAPPY!

I agree with Bev, if you can’t laugh at yourself (especially when the satire is good-natured, clever, and with a bit of truth attached to it), then you probably can’t laugh at much of anything. That is simply sad.

Well said, Denise. I think we all need to cool down and stop attacking each other (the whole country has gone mad!) People who are “whiners” are actually people who need to live a different life style (for now). All they have done, really, is to declare that they are not a tiny houser at this juncture; maybe they never will be; then again, you never know. Today’s McMansion lover could become tomorrow’s devout tiny houser (especially when they get sick of the high maintenance and HOA costs (him) and all that housework (her).

And as far as the serious ones in the bunch with allegedly no sense of humor; they probably just need a good vacation in the Pacific Northwest wilderness for awhile to get away from newspapers, radio and TV chatter and all the things that make modern society so annoying and stressful. I’m sure they feel that they are protecting the THM, but I have come to the conclusion that the THM isn’t a fad and it is the future. (Yippee!) 😀

HA HA! Love portlandia! I have had such bad luck with toasters, I just use my oven broiler to make toast. With summer coming on maybe I’ll invest in one and do the sideways thing, it’ll save me from heating up my bijoux apt and occasional burning mishaps.

    Very funny!

This was really funny! I KNOW there would be issues with living tiny, such as the ladder in front of the ref, but I’m sure you get into a routine! The fold-up kitty box made me bust a gut! SO FUNNY!

This gave me some major giggles!!!

I love this spoof but am surprised you chose to share it, Alex. It does show a few of the pitfalls of tiny house living. LOL

This video cracks me up, especially the cutting of toast on the guy’s back and the hot breath she can always feel! Just thinking about it makes me laugh! …Just typing this out and I laugh all over again…. where’s that tissue when I need it…. . . .

It’s a good thing you live in a TH, CathyAnn, because laughing that hard can often cause one to pee their pants…but since your toilet is only mere inches away from, well, WHEREVER you may be in your home, you should be able to leap to the loo even before the force of gravity results in the most minor case of “piddle pants”!

      * I really hope that visual renewed your fit of giggles…let us know if you were able to make it to your WC in time 🙂 🙂 🙂

OK, now you two have to stop that or you’re gonna make me pee my pants and my THOW isn’t built yet! I have a longer run to the loo! 🙂

        Loved the video! Thanks Alex!

I’d have watched it and, from the comments, probably thought it was funny but it says it can’t be watched ‘in my country’. Since I live on an island belonging to Puerto Rico and my country is the US, I’d love to get in touch with whoever makes those decisions to let them know HELLO! Geography? 6th grade?

Anyone really living a small to tiny lifestyle better have a sense of humor or life could get grim pretty quickly. My cat told me to add that; she’s hilarious.

Apparently it’s not available in Australia.
But am sooo building a tiny home.

I found this bloody brilliant. If you can’t make fun of yourself at some point, you’ve officially become a Stroppy Cow!

I like it! From the cutting of the toast on the guy’s back to the fold up kitty liter box. It’s all in good fun. Why shouldn’t it be shared? It’s good clean fun. The toilet/ office means simply that one would be more productive…..in more ways than one. LOL
IDK the term micro management comes to mind. Hilarious and thank you for sharing!

Too funny — too true — maybe a little too mini. If you can not laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at. Thanks for sharing Alex.
