Floating Micro Cabins Built Using Recycled Truck Caps

This is Truck-a-Float. It’s a floating micro shelter in NYC built using recycled truck caps.

Architects Matteo Pinto and Carolina Cisneros wanted to create a houseboat to live on in the summertime in New York City. The owners of Marina 59 in Far Rockaway, Queens had given them the space to build something (they paid the slip fee). Inspired by the hundreds of used truck caps they saw for sale along the highways of New Jersey and New York, they decided to build a floating home using a cap as a prefab roof complete with windows and screens.1

Saw these somewhere else, love them!! Great minimalist idea for a b & b in a normally very expensive place.

I completely agree! I would be worried the whole time about everything crashing in on me.

I wonder how a semi truck sleeper would look?

These will roll over so fast if a side wind were to hit them it isn’t funny.
Plus their floats have a history of sinking.
It needs to be shorter and wider.

The do look fairly tied up…..I certainly wouldn’t want to float around untethered but I thought the ties would keep them upright, assuming they are tied on the side too.

They have been tied up well and still get blown over made like these. I have a lot of experience living on the water in Key West where anything that can float became a home.
Then one day a wind bust would come though catching many sideways, rolling them both anchored out and at the dock.
Build wider and lower and decent hull/s, not floats that don’t leak, rust, collapse like those shown that have very short lives.
Look up shanty boats for simple very low cost but much safer
        ways.
One would be great with a solar canopy giving A/C, other comforts and catching rainwater and almost free living.
One of the best TH ways to live at low cost.

These are kind of cool and very primitive, but what about any bathroom facilities? Nothing was mentioned about that!

When I was growing up, I was constantly made fun of (by my own parents) for my unusual “forts”. One of them just happened to be a floating fort on the Yellow River in GA. They were for “me”. I never designed them with anybody else in mind. That being said, I’m glad to see adults “playing” around with ideas such as this. And, there are restrooms in the marina. Perfect. Kudos! I’d love to visit one day.
