It’s beautiful, but why such a high price??? I didn’t see any kitchen equipment or washer/dryer. The whole point of THOW’s is that they are supposed to be affordable housing.

No, affordability is just one of the things TH has to offer but it’s not the be all of what TH’s are for, just like a regular house… A TH is still a house and thus follows similar rules on how pricing can vary depending on size, how they’re built, what they’re made of, how they’re designed, and how they’re finished off with furniture and appliances…

A bit of a reality check is comparing these prices to say something comparable like a RV… A brand new 2017 Airstream Basecamp camper trailer will cost you nearly as much as this THOW, but it’s a lot smaller and wouldn’t be nearly as nice to live in as this THOW…

For what you get is a hand made THOW that is designed to be easily customizable by the owner… The 11′ 4″ of interior height is more than you’d get in most THOWs, especially the 5′ headroom for the loft… The Japanese style sidings are said to be able to last up to over 80 years and never needs to be painted or ever repainted…

It’s up to you as to whether that’s worth the price or you’d rather get something more cheaply made or even smaller…

This THOW is on a 24 foot trailer and offers just over 300 sq ft… A TH on a 16 foot trailer can go for about half the price but means nearly half the space…

Though, building it yourself and using mostly reclaimed materials could take off a large chunk of the costs involved… Then something this size could be made for around half the price but that’s a lot of work and a large commitment of your time as the trade off…

While doing it that way means you likely won’t meet building code but even if you do you won’t be able to get certified and that means you can’t get insurance, etc…

Things like RVIA certification means the builder has a factory that meets code, gets official inspections, pays for the certification license and inspection service, and has to meet or exceed the building code requirements… So not something a DIY’er could do but the trade off is their customers can apply for RV loans and get insurance for their THOW…

Along with other trade-offs that just shows you pretty much get what you pay for… regardless of what size the product may be…

Besides, Escape Home also is going to offer a DIY kit… I think it’s going to be around $25K but includes all materials and the plans for building the THOW… You just provide the labor…

Btw, if you want to be off grid then solar can cost anywhere from around $500 for a very basic setup to over $15,000 for powering everything off solar… So pricing can actually go up with certain features costing more than others…

Very eloquently, calmly and wisely stated! Thanks, James.

I signed up for their news letter, and I have seen this Tiny House , earlier today… I love what this builder has to offer, and would have no second thoughts about living in almost any of their tiny houses….. Lucky is he the master of this domain….!

It’s great! My first time seeing this design.

I like the style but not as a tiny house, but as a tiny store! I also plan on building a tiny store. But the high rent you pay for a store is twice the amount of a tiny house. You could have the store open in hour or so. Have heat or AC sure beats a tent.

That’s a great idea Larry! Maybe you could even sleep in the loft in your tiny store? Who knows!

I think there’s at least an option for one 🙂

    Zen is Chinese, not Japanese.
