Steel drums, up to fifty five gallons, work as well, and at a lot less cost.
No they won’t.
They have no hydrodynamics, essentially no amount of power will make them go over about 5 knots with any kind load on them.
They have no attachments points.
They provide no longitudinal stiffness (or lateral for that matter).
They are very thin skinned
They sink when holed.
The rust out quickly, particularly in salt water.
For a little while any way. A very little while if in salt water.
Looks as though they have taken the guess work out of it. You could even replace them individually in case of damage. NEED INFO. NEED INFO.
Oh? And just what do you consider ‘awhile’? I’ve known of them being in use for 20-30 years. Most of the people that use them, and want them to last, use barrels that have only been used maybe once, and are in very good condition. I’m not experienced with salt water, as I don’t mess around with water that has fish large enough, and ready, to eat me. I do know people start with good barrels, check them thoroughly, paint them with a good paint, and periodically check them. In other words, they treat them like a steel hull boat, which last for years and years. ‘Course a lot of people don’t like the looks of the barrels, and would rather pay more; more power to them, I’d go with barrels myself.
That kind of upkeep would certainly extend their life, as would hauling them out in winter, which is often not done in the applications I have seen them used for (docks, mostly). Without all that extra effort they perish in 5 years fresh water, and 2 years on salt water. I like the maintenance (read $) free poly idea. There ARE poly drums to be found…for the DIY’er. The stability of a continuos unit is still mor appealing to me over trying to keep 10-20 barrels from shifting and torquing on waves.
Steel barrels don’t last. They rust from both the inside and out. Plus hard to attach, needs welding. I’m not sure $ is the main concern when you’re floating around in deep cold water.

Since they’re in New Zealand, unless they have a vendor in the U.S., these aren’t going to be of much use to me. Interesting idea if someone here in the states wants to take the idea an run with it.

If you can wait for a LTL consolidator they would not be all that expensive to ship. They are relatively lightweight. A fair amount of New Zealand boats are purchased direct from the US.

there are many suppliers of plastic pontoons in the U.S. too.
Even on eBay you’ll be able to find them in different sizes and different colors even, and pretty cheap too.

Too cool! One might actually get a couple extras, place them connected to the house poles on the porch and use them like little tables in not needed times, then replace the ones that need replacing. Like spare tires, spare barrels 🙂

Lots of folks living in south louisiana on homemade boats.old pontoon boats,metal and plastic drums.as long as you don’t have a permenant attached engine,you don’t have to register as a boat.people criticize louisiana,but you live like you want to here.if you can stand the heat,bugs,snakes and corrupt politicians
FYI, check for a liquid smoke factory, we have one close and you can get 55 gallon poly drums free. They only give three at a time but If you have the space to store them, it works. I have already picked up six from here and plan on getting more. Good luck…
