Man Moves his DIY Off Grid Tiny House and Lives on the Beach Debt-free

A little while back I told you about Brett‘s amazing villa style off grid tiny house on wheels that he built in New Zealand.

At that time, it was parked at his parents house but that’s not where he planned on living in it.

By the way, you can see that post here in case you already haven’t which showcases and gives you a tour of Brett’s DIY tiny home on a trailer that he built himself after moving back to his home country.

Brett Moves his Off Grid Tiny House to the Beach

Video: Tiny Home Goes Off Grid to the Beach

In this video tour/interview you’ll also get:

  • Tips on how to build your own tiny house the DIY (Do It Yourself) way
  • Suggestions on how to go about finding a place to park and live in it
  • Tips when towing your micro home on wheels (and what vehicle he used to do it)
  • What to do first when going tiny and why

After Lots of Building Brett Can Finally Relax and Enjoy the Fruits of His Labor

After many, many seemingly never ending weeks of 10-12 hour days of working on and building his tiny house Brett is finally done and in a place where he can relax.

AND He’s Just a 5 Minute Walk to the Beach!

And best of all he’s only a casual 5 minute walk to the beautiful sandy beaches of New Zealand. I couldn’t think of a better spot for a tiny house.

How did he find the parking spot for his tiny home?

Great question. If you watch the video you’ll learn that he printed out a photo of what his house would look like when it’s finished and began posting it up everywhere and telling everyone he knew about what he was looking to do (find a place to park and live in his tiny house).

After a while he was led to a woman, then a man, who said, “yeah, I don’t see a problem with that.”

More tips on how to find parking for tiny houses in this post.

Nice place an good that he was able to find such a beautiful place to park!

Many older people need help around their property and may be willing to exchange a parking place for that help if you advertise and are willing to do the work.

The Tiny House Revolution… !!! Perfect song to end the video with… Definitely inspired… and as Brett said… you just have to start, then consistently take action one day at a time. Its like training for an ultramarathon… don’t give up on your dream.

Nice, good for you Brett, and thanks for the plans. To anyone who doesn’t know, Brett has the plans available for his Mobil Villa, they are well laid out plans and drawings.

Amazing, truly inspiring. We are in the middle of our build. A bit bigger 528sq feet and on the other side of the world, but hopefully a similar relaxed feel. Thanks for sharing.

It’s nice to see a place near the ocean that isn’t commercialized and overbuilt. A house on wheels makes perfect sense for such an area, with no permanent site alterations.

NZ is truly amazing like that. There are parts of the coastline that are built up, but the majority of it is completely rural and untouched. my husband and I considered buying a plot that was only reachable by boat. Pretty amazing.

That sounds ideal to me. I’m all into remote areas. Looks like a beautiful country from what I’ve seen thru film and photos. It amazes me when people buy up a beautiful piece of land and then proceed to ruin it by building huge structures, planting non-native or ill suited plantings, or even worse, a monoculture lawn that requires fertilizers, pesticides and irrigation.

It’s tough to immigrate there. We did our best, and ultimately got rejected. 😛

Thanks for posting this up Alex! We all had a really great time at his house warming, and it was fantastic to see his Tiny House being properly lived in. We were especially amazed at the ease in which so many people could work together in the kitchen. Brett’s journey really is testament to great design and thinking outside the box.

Different Subject: Some people use cargo containers for a tiny house, how would a semi trailer work? Can be 53’Lx8’6″Wx13′-6″H (outside), can get a trucker to move it at a good rate, saving from buying a big pick up truck that cost $40-$50K. Looking forward to hearing from you or the pro and con.

I am in the process of turning a truck bed into a living environment. It’s 8 feet wide by 18 feet long. It has the most beautiful butcher block plank flooring. I am gathering my ideas and doing it a little at a time as money comes in so it does not set me back thousands all at one time. It sits on my Estate and will have a beautiful view and a courtyard behind it. Yes a truck trailer will work because I am a Designer and I am going to do it. I am home recovering from being hit by a car on my bike and have rented my rooms in the main house to help me survive the lack of income. Sitting here each day healing and going for treatment I have lots of time to think about this project and it keeps me from going bananas.

Love this house, Brett and the place you found to park it. You have helped me shifting my thinking from finding a location first, to just start designing, planning and then build. The right location will follow.

And a splendid time was had by all. Can’t wait to grill on the barbie…
Story could not have gone any better. Good for him. Many countries now make it very difficult to emigrate there without bringing in a big chunk of cash. Maybe he planned this all along but for me, I’d have to know where it was going to set before plunging the investment.
