Curved Modern Small Home: The Domo Dom in Poland

This amazingly curved modern small home in Krakow, Poland was designed by Arciteckt.Lemanski.

It was created for a client of theirs who wanted to have gardening space even though the lot didn’t have very much outdoor space.

Inside the house, the client wanted a simple and minimalist look and feel while still ensuring the home was perfectly functional. The result is what you see below.

This is great! Unique and beautiful.
How many steps is that? and what is the cost to build?

    Where’s the bedroom?!

Gotta admit, not my cup of tea. Seems like a lot of wasted space under the curve of the roof on the second floor…the dip in the ceiling reduces headroom to crawlspace, so only half the space is actually usable.

There’s also that weird long hallway going from the main entry to the driveway – more wasted space.

Personally, I’d have to call this house a case of too much design and not enough function.

Hallway from the main entry to the driveway? There is no hallway going to the driveway… perhaps you are looking at the floorplan that is shown, and is quite small.

If you go to this website you will see everything rather larger, & therefore clearer…

What looks like a possible hallway is in fact the stairway up to the second level.

Unfortunately 2nd level floorplan isn’t shown, so you can’t get the full perspective of the plane…

And Alex, links to the Architect don’t resolve to the DNS… bummer.

Operator error… not: so you can’t get the full perspective of the plane…

should reada: so you can’t get the full perspective of the plan…

        Damned Fat Fingers… ; )

Derp. You’re right, those are the stairs. I stand corrected.

Not sure that’s an improvement, though…there doesn’t appear to be a door from the garage into the rest of the house, so that means walking around the outside to get between areas. You’d also have to walk around the house to get to any storage under the stairs.

I’m just saying, it seems to me like the house was designed to fit the shape, instead of the shape accommodating the house.

I think that is very creative. I think it is neat that it has a garage. I think it is nice that it has stairs instead of a ladder.

Aha, found a link that resolves…

No floorplans, but more, bigger, clearer pictures. And, alas no sign of the bedroom… but this is ONE AWESOME piece of architecture.

I believe those sofas are large enough to convert into sleep areas. I do wonder how the rain water is channeled at the lowest point of the curved roof design. Was that a solar water heater on one side of the roof or a water collection pipe system? Depending on the climate, I see potential roof leaks or damage from water/ice or snow.

It looks like a house that’s eating another house. And I say to hell with it.

    Freud much????

    Wow–those poor poor neighbors!

Those stairs are SCARY the deck with that “dexwood” crap will be slippery as hell–ask me HOW I know—and the roof–well others have mentioned that.

    No thanks

My main question is how does THIS house solve their stated need:
“It was created for a client of theirs who wanted to have gardening space even though the lot didn’t have very much outdoor space.”
I saw NO gardening to speak of inside or out…
With regards to the rest of the house…meh…not for me, and I agree with some commenters above that it feels heavy on form and light on function.

THIS HOME LOOKS LIKE IT COULD BE IN A SCIENCE FICTION MOVIE. I MUST SAY, THESE FOLKS ARE CREATIVE IN THEIR OWN UNIQUE WAY.
