Creative NYC Small Apartment Conversion: Modern & Reclaimed

Here’s a reclaimed 500-square-foot small apartment conversion in the East Village Manhattan area of New York City covered by SpacesTV on YouTube.

When the owner first got the apartment it was in bad condition. It was unfinished, had holes in the floor, framing was exposed, and there was a lot of cleaning up to do. The owner, Bill Di Paola, was envisioning it’s potential and began to create a completely customized place for himself. He wanted it to have a spacious feel, give it lots of light, and use as many recycled materials as possible.

Bill chose bright white colors, shiny stainless steel, and a minimal amount of furniture which I think really helped achieve all of that. After you take a look, let me know what you liked best about it in the comments.

There are very few pieces of furniture and they almost blend right into the walls. Bill says, “It’s perfect … it’s what I want.” Take a look at the rest of this home and watch the entire video tour below:

In the kitchen you’ll notice the unique cabinets that were recycled from Pan Am before the airline went out of business. They’re shiny stainless steel and have this historic look and feel to them.

Bill did something else that’s very creative in the kitchen. He “streamlined” his appliances with a unique cabinet design that covers everything. It gives the kitchen this clean, minimalist, and modern look. I also think it has this commercial feel about it but I really like it.

The bathroom which you can see in the video tour below is dark yet spacious since it’s all open. It’s designed kind of like a wet bath because the drainage is built into the flooring and the showerhead is mounted onto the ceiling. Did I mention heated floors?

You can see right through the sink which I’ve never seen before in a bathroom and there’s even a wall mounted LCD television in there for entertainment. And by the way, here’s what the place looked like when Bill first got it:

Bill I am in love with your apartment! Your creativity vision and talent surely is what made this great space a reality. What do I like BEST? Otha’s to be the mirrored ceilings, no… The super looks of the totally enclosed kitchen — the sliding countertop that hides the burners of the stove is brilliant It does remind me of a spaceship. Have you ever seen the interior of the Jupiter ship in 2001?

Dude! What great vision you have. The place turned out gorgeous. Would you consult on my build? Can’t wait to see what you do next.

I see he’s into Star Trek The Next Generation. What post on the ship wears orange?

My thought exactly! I think orange is the new red – destined to die, but not necessarily anytime soon.

Very well thought out and done. A little too sterile and industrial for my taste. Lacks warmth and coziness. But a true work of art none the less

I must admit I live many aspects of this apartment. I don’t think I could live there, but I can be see where he is coming from. Love the way those kitchen doors work! We had a fab wet room in our previous house and I would live to have one again.

Amazing transformation from small, dark and dingy to large, bright and clean. The ceiling treatment doubles the visual size and is very unique – nice job!
