Great interview. Though the problem with all the content on this site and others, is that NO ONE talks about the most important and frustrating aspect of tiny living: Where and how do you find a place to put the house?! I would have lived to hear about how these people found the land to park on, and how they expect to find it in the future when they decide to move. They make it sound so easy to just pick up and go. Yet this is the biggest barrier, by far, to adopting a tiny living lifestyle. I want to do this, but i can’t find affordable land to park it and i don’t want to pay rent of $500/mo or more as that pretty much defeats the purpose. In California, especially, land is $200k for anything remotely near a city. Add in a tiny house cost and you’re at $350k, minimum. I could buy a townhouse in wine country for that. We need a site dedicated to tiny house PARKING.

The trouble with the few sites that are dedicated to tiny house parking is that the visitors are almost all current/future tiny house owners. Few land owners are actively seeking to rent out space on their property, much less specifically to a THOW. Of course, that will probably change if the movement continues to grow at the rate it’s currently going. Bottom line is, the land owner must already be tiny house savvy to go posting on one of those sites. We’re just not there yet.
The best option I’ve got is to utilize Craigslist – particularly the parking/storage section (you can find it under Housing). Either look for a post for parking offered or make a post for parking wanted. This works so well because Craigslist attracts a wide range of people for many different interests, rather than a small group of people with one particular interest. You’re likely to reach a land owner that hadn’t even considered hosting a tiny house.
Last month I made a parking wanted post and secured land in under 2 weeks. A farmer who had rented to an old war vet in an RV for years prior saw my post and contacted me. He ended up showing me a couple of different areas I can park on his land, which I’ll be renting for $200 a month. If I were relying on tiny house parking websites, I’d probably need to wait a year or two until they start attracting land owners.

The whole Tiny House Movement is still very new. I’ve been talking about places to park for at least a couple of years now. There have been attempts to get a site going for people to list on, but the movement is still so new a lot of folks are waiting to see if it’s just a flash in the pan, or a wave of the future.

Also, there are home owners and city councils ahead of us in land ownership and management. We have had a couple of breakthroughs in getting certain cities to loosen up their codes and zoning laws to allow for tiny houses. Olympia, WA is dead set against tiny houses and are making laws to keep us out. Then there is Portland, OR which welcomes tiny housers. So, it’s a patchwork of yes and no’s at this point; but we are working on it.

Have a look at the Lucky Penny tiny house and the commune it is located in. Here some people got together and purchased a house with land and then all moved their THOW’s into the backyard. It took work and they had to jump hoops to comply with utility companies and the city ordinances, but they got the job done and now six THOW’s have permanent homes. Maybe you could get some folks together and do the same.

If we all pitch in together and do what we can, we can make this happen. It’s a wonderful lifestyle and the people are grand, so take heart and jump in! ;D

My only thought ?? if you can have a washing machine, why not a real toilet as opposed to a 5 gallon bucket ? Do you have a grey or black water tank ? (I did not watch the video, I will when I get home).

I’d prefer a composting toilet over a “real toilet” even though theirs could use a cover on the front to be more aesthetically pleasing. A black water tank would need to be dumped and would probably smell. A composting toilet is a lot more environmentally friendly than wasting our clean water by contaminating it with feces. It is also simpler to install since you don’t need to worry about plumbing or being connected to sewage or a septic tank. As far as grey water goes, I’ve seen many tiny home owners who empty their grey water onto the ground using a hose, french drain or another system to spread out the water. They use biodegradable soaps and have the greenest grass around.

i LOVE this house! i was so happy to see a video tour and a very detailed one at that… but man, what an awkward interview! not the lovely interviewer’s fault at all… the girlfriend was very passive-aggressive and it is sadly quite obvious she is holding a grudge against the bf and can’t wait to ditch him and the tiny house and run away to hawaii! 🙁

whoa… i agree, what a bummer of an interview, made me feel awkward, turned it off half way thru. agree with what they said about needing space, could we say, 1000 miles perhaps.
however… really cool job on the build out. would have enjoyed hearing more of the nuts and bolts on how he put his project together.

regarding places to put a tiny house. i have to give y’all a heads up, in my area of the country there are thousands of places to put a tiny house. yup… 1000’s. in fact i’ll offer a wager, i will have 100 places to park your tiny home in 24 hours and will wager a $1000 to that affect.

forthwith comes the clue, when you hail from states that have more laws than cooter’s hound has ticks, you are in an oppressive environment. consequently only the wealthy make the rules. the wealthy have no interest in tiny homes, or you, and they never will. hedonism has it’s price. never the less in many states, that are truly progressive, legislation exists that adapts to wealthy and modest means, living small is embraced.

susanne, i won’t keep you in suspense, and you probably have guessed i speak of the great nation, within a nation, Texas. bold, brash, braggadocious, Texas. Texans enjoy other states slanderous comments, considering them like a strand of hard earned pearls, criticism is nourishing milk, and through our veins runs quicksilver. ok, i’ll quit.

but… here is the real gold of Texas, there are no county zoning laws in the 268,820 square miles, or 254 counties of Texas. we built 2 tiny homes, and four tiny businesses on one tiny piece of property, and we had one inspection of our engineered facility, the septic system.

Texas helps people succeed at their dreams like no other state does. say what you will, but Texas creates a gdp of 10% of the united states total gdp. i love Texas, i love Texans, but if you come don’t try to change it, cause many a person has left bruised and battered with their tail between their legs who offended a Texan with the comment “this is how we do it where i come from”.

yes, the wager is real, and it still stands. no intention to cause anyone discomfort with the comments, they are offered as encouragement to those who seek a hope, for a simpler, debt free lifestyle. it exists, but at a price.

Texas? Land of Republicans? Land of opportunity, as long as you don’t want an education or a living wage.
