Meet this Couple Living in a 204 Square Foot Tiny House

I’ve been following Shane and Carrie’s process for a little while now after finding out about their blog, Clothesline Tiny Homes.

I was excited to find out that they were featured on ABC 12 in a video that you can actually watch (below) so you get the full tour of their new tiny house.

Shane is a contractor and he says he’s willing to build more if people want to buy them. For me, it’s just exciting to see more and more people- especially couples- choosing to live in tiny houses.

At just 204 square feet, it’s going to be a big change from what they were used to. But here’s the exciting part…

The couple’s housing bills are going down to $300 a month from $1300. That’s where part of the power of small comes in.

This allows Shane and Carrie to gain financial independence much faster. Not only that, but it also makes life way easier, simpler, and practically stress-free.

They can clean their new home in about 5 minutes and I just love how their couch faces large windows rather than a big screen TV.

The shelter is 24′ by 8′ and is attached to a trailer so they can hook it up to their truck- much like a 5th wheel travel trailer- and take it wherever they want to go next.

Head on over to ABC 12 to read the original article and don’t forget to drop by Clothesline Tiny Homes to subscribe to their blog. If you want to see even more pictures of their house go check out this post on their blog.

    Hello,
Thanks for posting what Carrie and I are doing. We are striving to Design & Build Simpler Lifestyles through smaller homes. The design that we came up with was something that has not been done before and we are loving it. There is plenty of room for the two of us plus our dog Rio.

We are working on the pricing and I will post the options and pricing very soon. We do believe in what this community of like minded folks are doing and here to support this movement that is unfolding before our eyes. It has helped us move ahead with this idea that I’ve had for a number of years.

Thanks to everyone for there support, and were loving the feed back.

      Shane,
You and Carrie did an excellent job on your home. The layout is a very good one, and I think for anyone who is looking to a tiny home to better their lives, you have nailed it.

I have shared tiny homes as a way to help people make it through the recession, and even a way to help see them keep their dog(s) should BSL become an issue in their area. Being able to have more out of life has also been my selling point. I would love to see what you can come up with for families with more than one dog or cats, and maybe a single parent family. We are all of the above, and I am pretty sure that when we are ready to go for it, we will be looking to see what you and Carrie can come up with. My daughter and I are working towards adopting the tiny lifestyle, and it is a challenge. I cannot wait to read your blog. Are you on Facebook, as well?

Funny, I follow Alex’s blog faithfully, and I have never left a comment. Today, I have left 2.

      Best,
      Nikhhi

Hey Nikhi, I’m glad you came out and commented today it’s always nice to hear from all of you to share and swap ideas, etc. By the way, what’s BSL? Good call on a tiny house designed for folks with pets and single parents. I’ll see what I can do to help make that happen. Shane and Carrie’s Facebook Page link is below but it’s not too active yet:

Again thanks for coming out and chatting!

          Hey Alex!

I am glad I get a chance to tell you what an awesome blog you have. It is the only tiny house one I follow faithfully. 🙂

BSL is Breed Specific Discrimination. Normally it will target Pit Bull type dogs, but, I believe there are about 75 breeds of dogs that pose insurance issues in various places throughout the US, as well as housing issues. There are a lot of people who rent who cannot have their dogs with them, so we see a lot of dogs sent to shelters, or worse. A lot of places are also not keen on renting to people who have cats, or any pets, so being able to own your own tiny home really is an excellent idea. Especially with dogs, because you do get out more to exercise them, which means healthier for the people. Not a bad thing, at all! I think this is also what drew me to this home- it is not often you see people who have pets living the tiny-small lifestyle. I think if more people came forward, more would realize what a viable option this really is. Some homes are not, but, a lot are…like this one.

By the way, Shane, where do you keep the food bowls, for your little cutie? And how do you find life with a dog in a tiny home?

Hey Shane- it’s an honor to have your house here. We’re lucky to have people like you who are making it happen and sharing it with the world so really.. thank you. If there’s anyway I can help in the future just let me know and I’ll be glad to.

I think this is one of my favourite designs for a tiny house. I think it is amazing to see what a contractor and a designer can do together. I would love to see them do more tiny homes.
Going to follow them now. Thanks for sharing their home.

    Hello to everyone,
First off thanks for all the great words. Since we first got this going we have been coming to this site for inspiration and motivation. The community that surrounds the Tiny Home is great. Carrie and I feel very lucky that we can be a part of it.

We have been living in in our Tiny Home for about a week and are very happy to be living the dream of a debt free life. What is funny is that I received the deposit back on the rental house we were living in and it will pay for two and half months worth of rent, electric, and water. What a great feeling that is. We can only hope to help others that want to make it reality.

Carrie and I want to show and prove that living in 204sq’ is more then plenty of room for two + Rio our dog. OK he is only about 13lb but he thinks he 130lb! We were just working on the blog today and did an update on how things are working out so I won’t go into to many details, but here is a link http://clotheslinetinyhomes.com/2012/05/26/living-in-the-tiny-house-first-week/ . But I want every one to know that I will be posting on our blog about some pricing for our models and I’m also working on offering a Dry-in model that one can be finished out them self’s. Part of of joy of owning a Tiny Home is building it. And knowing that your own hands built the roof over your head. But what we would like to offer is the framing and roofing is finished and ready for the trim out. That is some of the most fun anyway. And the most difficult structure end of it is done.

We really enjoy everyone’s feed back and we welcome idea’s on what you may want. We are striving to Designing & Building Simpler Lifestyles Thought Smaller Homes. That is one why we want to live in what we believe in and be able to offer a home that is well sorted out.

    Thanks for our support.
Your friends at Clothesline Tiny Homes,
    Shane and Carrie

I really, really like the roomy layout of this house. Makes it feel larger than it is. I love the way they exploited the character of pipes by leaving them visible in the shower as well as how they use the splitter between the sink and the shower! Would love to know how that Rheem tankless water heater is working out?

    • June 2, 2012, 7:52 am

Glad you liked it, Randy- I also liked how they added closet space underneath the bed and how this keeps you with plenty of headroom in the bedroom.

Yes, yes to this house, Alex! This is a winner. You know I adored this video, just love seeing a glimpse of their life. Yes, to being outside. I am an outside person myself here in rural south central sunny Arkansas.

I would consider myself an advocate for the tiny house movement, too. Of course, I live in a small cabin myself!
Case in point: I read, April 27, 2012
    100 Years of Staying Put
By BENJAMIN WEISER and NOAH ROSENBERG

“They kept the building at No. 502 as a rental property; its rear cottage became a favorite landing spot for writers like Judith Thurman, the essayist, and later, the novelist Donna Tartt, who lived there for about a decade, until 2004. “It was a perfect retreat,” Ms. Tartt said, “like a tree house or a doll’s house you’d dream of living in as a child, with its own secret garden.” “It was also very quiet, and I could work there in perfect seclusion, reading and writing.”
