Couple Build Debt-free Double Decker Bus Home

This post contains affiliate links.

Daniel Bond, a self-employed electrician, found it impossible to get approved for a mortgage. So he and his partner decided they would turn a double decker bus into their very own mortgage-free two bedroom home.

Inside it has everything a normal house has. A kitchen, lounge, bar, bathroom, and two bedrooms! And best of all, it’s debt-free. No mortgage? No problem.

Better yet, it’s on wheels, too. So if they ever have a major life change, they can just drive wherever they want or need to go.

Daniel Bond and Stacey Drinkwater from Canterbury bought the bus for £3,000 and have spent £11,000 installing plumbing, a kitchen and a bedroom.

God for Stacey and Daniel. Their bus looks great (nice and spacious within a small footprint). Great job. I love to hear stories about people who went around the banks and came out for the better in the long run; no mortgage, no interest, no worries, no foreclosures… whoever said banks were a good thing?
    Good show, young beans!!!

Love it! There will some double deckers available in 10 to 15 years because of that super bus service here in the US. So much space, no mortgage and it still runs – WOW! Be still my gypsy heart. Thanks for sharing this, Alex.

Yes, there will be some Mega buses available in the next several years, that is if they stop getting into accidents.

Ever since seeing the Cliff Richard movie Summer Holiday way back when I wanted to live in a double decker bus. Never happened so it’s nice to see someone do it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4usgq-F3YYA

Had a similar idea running around in my head for over 20 years. Everytime I see one on the street or in the movies I think’ “There goes my bus”. Good on them for making something kewl. Also for making not quite so bus-like.

I especially covet the double decker buses you see driving around DC with the entirely-glass covered tops; it would be supremely beneficial to have a greenhouse upstairs in one’s own movable-tiny home! Kudos, bus dwellers!

      That is GENIUS.

Love this bus conversion. I think it’s bigger than my apartment.

.. I used to dream about turning a double decker into a home .. I would get tech drawings of AEC and Leyland buses that were ex Sydney Public Transport and draw up all sorts of designs .. I found other interests as I grew up and disposed of all my plans in my late teens .. I now own a 1920’s Melbourne tram that I have on a 1/4 acre in a little country town in Victoria .. Unfortunately I have no money to do anything with it and live a couple of hours or so drive away .. I’d still like a double decker ..

Mark I also own a 1920’s Melbourne tram in a little country town in Victoria! Just outside of Kyneton, converted into 2 bedrooms and lounge area. Would love to see what you’ve done with yours, are there photos online somewhere?

I really love this idea! I have wanted to do this for years. I once saw a double decker bus in a private lakeside USA setting with a paved drive for parking, a fictional bus stop and a red telephone booth with a surrounding of a heavy wooded area to hide an additional cabin behind the bus. Very attractive and pleasing to the eye. What fun to have such bus and home combination!

Believe me, the bus is the EASY part! Now find somewhere to put it where the council won’t be all over you, where the police won’t be REALLY convinced that you’re “new age travellers”. Find the place FIRST is my advice in the UK..

Agree, 100%. Im also in the UK, and it is all but impossible to build tiny houses here due to the crazy Planning laws.

Anybody ELSE recall a late-1960’s Saturday Morning Kids show entitled: “The Double Deckers”? Think it was a group of British kids who used an old double decker bus as their club house. Can almost remember the lyrics to that “catchy them song”! LOL!

Can you imagine waking up in that upper deck bed surrounded by beach, mountains, desert??? Love this bus.

No… but I could see waking up and seeing Ents… (what you say? Go watch Lord of the Rings to find out then!)

Michelle, I love your idea of a greenhouse on the 2nd level! I was thinking that here’s a loft already built with stairs, but I think your plan might be better.

Most likely Lampini is right. This bus is so unordinary, many RV parks won’t allow it since it doesn’t conform. You would need your own property to park .

Hi. I am also in the UK. Where do you park it? How on earth did you manage to get round Planning etc? Would love to hear from you.
      Thanks
