I love the converted caboose! I am a conductor also living in New York and would love to have one (or a few) of these :0) I’m definitely jealous!

What a rare and inspiring opportunity to restore and modify this rail car. I wish you all the very best in this endeavor. I envy you. Please share it again when you have it habitable. I am interested in your choices. Thank you all.

I think it’s fantastic that this couple has the opportunity to rebuild something like this. According to the news broadcast, Randy worked for the railroad for a long time & had his eye on this caboose for 10-15 years. Sounds like it will be a true labor of love for them. In answer to the questions posed above.

No, I personally have no desire to rebuild an 80 year old wooden caboose. Reason: Time & money primarily plus not really all that nostalgic regarding trains. If it was an airplane, I’d be on the fence. I’ve rebuilt so much old stuff in the past that I’d much rather start with a clean slate. That way I can have the exact design I desire & not have to compromise. (not at all opposed to salvaged materials though) I’m sure it wasn’t cheap to have the unit transported to it’s resting place & looking at the exterior, it seems it will need a lot of new wood.
That said, this is way cool & I hope we get to see the finished product!

I would and I did restore a 1909 wooden caboose in upstate PA. It’s an ongoing labor of love. If you want to see pictures, they are on Pinterest.

Would love to see pictures… What should we search to find them?
