Backyard Tiny Hobby House Built from Recycled Windows

This post contains affiliate links.

I love when our readers share what they’re doing to make tiny houses in their own way and this tiny backyard hobby house is one of them.

They’ve been collecting unwanted windows that would have otherwise just been thrown away. And once they had enough of them…

They built this tiny little house in the backyard. I like to call it a tiny hobby house. But it’s also very much like a micro greenhouse, too. Our hope is that it might inspire you to use old windows too!

One of my favorite parts about it are the real trees and plants that are able to grow inside and how they included space to plant them as part of the design. Pretty cool, right? I hope you enjoy below and if you want to feel free to re-share and inspire others to possibly do the same.

I love the windows concept and have printed off the pictures of it….I think it would work for our screened in porch which we want to turn into a 3 season room……If you have more pictures of other tiny homes with bedrooms and bathrooms on the lower level for older folks who can’t climb ladders and steps very well…I hope you post them as well….Would like to see more inside photos of all the homes when you send out your pix. Enjoy looking at them so much and maybe someday I could downsize to something easier to maintain. Thank you very much.

For greenhouse inspiration, yes, but here in Texas, I would die inside that hobby house!

Good use of different size windows. When I lived in Texas my dream was a shade house instead of a greenhouse.

I look forward to building a big greenhouse to go with my small house.

A guy we know built a chicken raising coop-house from one LARGE bow window–the kind with the tiny almost useless “vent” windows on the bottom–he turned the window over so the vents now actually DO vent upwards and used other random windows and doors for the rest of the structure—claimed that even in the middle of a brutal Upstate NY Winter with this South Facing he was able to get it to 101* in there. With a small wood stove or propane/oil heater and some heavy drapes you could use this as a studio or for chickens etc.

Another clever neighbor collected different sizes of windows similar to those used here and filled in the top and bottom of his porch rail opening with them–the open spaces above and below the center hand rail I should say. This gave a center stability point and a horizontal “Focus” line. I don’t know how much solar gain he got but his house faces South so probably a good deal===we face East and have a big gain in winter between the inner and outer door and from our large “picture” window,
