Open-Concept Tiny House with DIY Elevator Bed that Hides to Ceiling

This post contains affiliate links.

Today you are in for a huge treat: This Open Concept Modern Tiny House with an Elevator Bed. The home, designed and built in Alaska by Ana White, would be amazing simply because of the $500 DIY elevator bed she created which solves the “loft problem” — but it gets better! The house is packed full of DIY, multi-purpose furniture pieces that often do two, three — even four — different things. There’s even a hidden washer/dryer combo unit!

If you are building your own tiny house it’s well worth the time to watch the video below to learn from Anna’s brilliance. Because of her rural Alaskan location, most things were built from items you can find at the hardware store. This might be the most creative tiny house we’ve shown you to date! Plus, you can get the free plans for the storage/chair cubes shown in the video, links are at the bottom of this article.

Anna White is a pretty incredible woman, it’s hard to believe how she managed to find all that space in this small Tiny house.

I simply love the clever elevator bed, so much better than a loft, even more if you’re not as fit as you used to be.

The double and triple use of most of the fit-out is the smartest solution I’ve seen sofar.

    It’s magic !

I love this tiny house! The bed solves a lot of problems as well as all the modular furniture items (sofa, table, closet, cereal cabinet, etc).

I am looking as a converted bus tiny and this Ana White layout is a great place to start.

I especially like the elevator bed. It would need to be lowered when driving, to avoid its weight swaying the bus on corners, but that’s hardly inconvenient. And it would allow me far more empty floorspace in a bus.

I would need to put my kitchen along the wall but I would use a flap-up bench extension as extra bench space and also as my standing desk.

I would use the flap-up table for eating. I’d previously thought of a flap-down one but the flap-up one here is much better for me.

Another really great aspect of this design is that all the fittings and fixtures are standard hardware items but it looks so stylish.

I have been following her from the moment I saw this tiny.

Wow, this is perfect! The bed is awesome and I love that much of the furnishings and fixtures are multifunctional.

This Tiny House has everything, and space for lrg dining, the elevator bed is great as are all of the storage places and multi-use of items. I think her ideas are probably keeping her awake at night, I know mine do at times. Now I fall asleep designing my Tiny in my head. lol!

I am so impressed with this tiny house. It is just excellent. Very clever on the multiple uses and design of this house. The only thing I might add, would be out side solar panels. Either on the roof or attached/connected on the outside. What type of water hook up is needed and heating type?

    • Natalie C. McKee
      February 8, 2017, 7:06 am

I think it’d be a standard RV connection from the looks of it? And I’m sure you could add solar. Not sure what the heat was!

I have seen several homes they have built on this site, and this is by far my favorite. I love everything about it. When can you come to Texas and build mine, LOL. I love the idea of no stairs or ladders. The kitchen is perfect for everything I would want or need. The only problem I have would be the W/D combo. I would like separate washer and dryer, how could that work? I suppose the W/D combo would work, I have never used one, but his particular home would be perfect for me and my cat. I could also keep my home based business. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT!!!!
Would also like to know the cost of this home in particular. Thank you for this showing.

      February 8, 2017, 7:06 am

I’m sure there are good washer/dryer units, and for one person you can manage, but the one in my apartment is dreadful haha. It’s actually handy, if the dryer dried clothing after one cycle. You never forget to swap, and if you do a load a day or every other day it all fits. But ours takes AT LEAST 2 dry cycles. But I bet if you research, you could find an awesome option 🙂

Hi Alex, just love these listings. From the questions being asked, it may be something you could add, or whatever, just giving a spot to contact builders on certain /a list maybe, but of course the original Tiny Houses at top.

Hi Cyndi Ann — We always include in the “Resources” section, links to the builders or owners. Builders will always have a “Contact Us” page 🙂 Owners are more challenging because sometimes they shared with us, but they don’t have the time to respond to all the questions.

So open and creative with the multipurpose uses!
Having a shelf for herbs in the kitchen with sunshine is a great feature to me as well as the lift bed..
Fresh air via a small slider window in the bathroom is a must for me, being right by the kitchen cooking…
The hot water heater behind the toilet, should it spring a hot water leak is a bit concerning, maybe higher up in a slim cabinet, or under kitchen sink? My only concerns.
Anna you have Sheer Genius in space manipulation…. Thank You for sharing!

Ana White is the most creative builder ever, this house is unbelievable (and she’s beautiful too, but not for sale I know).
I love the wide open space and all the small detail of clever ideas and centimeter perfect arrangement. If I lived in Alaska (never, too cold for me) I’d ask Ana to build one for me, she’s so much better than most tiny house builders we’ve seen here from the USA. I am guessing Ana does all the design, and her hubby drives to the store to buy raw materials and help fitting them under her control, lol.
I would love to know how much the client paid for this please? (sure others wanna know too)
Now the only problem I see, all the more in cold Alaska: Ana says the bath has no window (hopefully a fan?) and the clothes are hanging right in it. Let me say from experience: The mould will be a “joy” so much it will cause when just one person showers warm for 5 min twice a week, lol. Also it doesn’t have a sink. I wouldn’t want to wash my hands (not to mention mornings and evenings more than hands) in the kitchen sink.
Regardless, I am sure Ana White would easily be able to adapt this house to my bathroom requirements. 🙂
Ohh, and the bed is even automatic, wow! The tables and chairs, wow! Love it all!! Ohh, and the cleverest way EVER of utilizing that damn corner space: the washer, wow!!
Ana: keep up the great work, I wish you many happy clients with deep enough pockets. 🙂

The washer was so clever! 🙂 Loved it!!!

    February 7, 2017, 1:38 pm

Turns out Ana just called me and so I have the answer: material cost no more than 30k total, and double that with the build included.
(na, she didn’t call (yet) I watched another vid on her site where she mentions the price) so there you have it. A bargain for what it is I say!

Admit it…This has been a month of Amazement..Two of the BEST Tiny Home concepts..This Genius is an exception even for Alaska. I would suggest there has been a Bar established and I do not think we will see better in my lifetime. Imagine what a builder in the World could do not having the Alaska cold to deal with…These Ideas will change the whole industry….And at a cost that most will be able to afford…Imagine what the crew at Tiny Texas Houses can do with their 80K sq.ft. of reclaimed material warehouses?

Yes, the bed idea is very, ever clever.

But what struck me the most, and what I like the most, are the large windows. There is nothing that makes a small space seem bigger than having lots of unobstructed views of the larger world outside.

    • Natalie C. McKee
      February 8, 2017, 6:50 am

Yes I agree. Those windows really do the trick! I was wondering if they have those shades inside them that you can close? Just at night because I’m paranoid hehe.

  • Sharon
    February 7, 2017, 8:57 pm

This is great! So many innovations! The one thing I didn’t quite get – when they have company and the sectional is made into a bed, does it then pull out so the regular bed can be lowered?

    • Natalie C. McKee
      February 8, 2017, 6:37 am

She mentioned “now it’s in bunk mode,” so I think you’d just have to “bunk up” that night. However, it all seemed movable so I bed you could pull it out into that other floor space.

Bravo! This THOW is the best of the best. Anna White you have raised the bar for builders and designers. You listened to your client’s wishes and created a beautiful home with the most creative features. The cereal storage really made me smile. I work in Battle Creek, MI which is known as Cereal City USA. The city hosts an annual Cereal Fest which is known for the longest breakfast table. Your ingenious table could be dubbed the longest THOW breakfast table. Thank you for sharing this gem!

This is the best tiny house design, no stairs taking up space and no ladder. The elevator bed is wonderful. I would like a larger refrigerator and sink in the bathroom. Well designed for storage. Very open and roomy. I could comfortably live in this house and it would be easy to keep clean.

  • Patricia Chang
    February 8, 2017, 3:35 am

A very ingenious house and quite attractive. I really like the elevator bed. No ladders, no stairs, no problem with headroom. The sectional is fantastic as are the storage cube/seats. I would put casters on the boot box/step. For myself, I would add on a few feet off the bathroom for a stackable washer and dryer and a closet or more shelves and a small sink. This would, of course, increase the price. I wouldn’t be moving the house, once I found a suitable place to put it. I do not like composting toilets, so I would need it plumbed for a regular flush toilet. Also, I would put a narrow plant shelf on or over the wheel well under the window. I like plants in TH to clean and refresh the air/O2 levels, especially in the winter. This is truly an IDEA house. Anna White is an exceptional designer.

    • Natalie C. McKee
      February 8, 2017, 6:31 am

  • PaulaV
    February 8, 2017, 8:26 am

I’ve seen a alot of innovation in the tiny house world from many others however I was missing the “European design mind” in tiny spaces. I always would notice wasted space and lack of consistent multi-function within…..something they do better than us because they have always had to work within smaller confines. There would be a few clever things but not across the board which need to always happen when building tiny. Ana has definitely accomplished this. She’s clever and thoughtful in her work. And I love that she uses everyday materials to show us that spaces can still be aesthetically pleasing, multipurpose and cost effective.

    • Natalie C. McKee

No sink in the bathroom, you are correct.

  • Michael
    February 8, 2017, 7:08 pm

I have been always proposing a lift up bed and multipurpose furniture for non permanent use as a space saving feature for THOW. This is a great example how it looks like. Together with huge windows and plenty of light you can create the illusion of much more than 20 ft which is a great size for towing, too.
I would place kitchen and bathroom on the opposite ends and living space in between because counter space is limited for daily cooking from scratch and a u-shape provides more room for a full size fridge and moving, too.
The barn doors are a bit to rustic for my taste but that is cosmetic.
Multiple table and stool options are perfect. The wardrobe in the bathroom is interesting but not really for the FL climate with its high humidity.
Anyway, I like the approach and most of the details.
    Great job.

I’ve been pumped about planning this tiny new chapter in my life, but I’ve felt discouraged in my research. I’m near NYC and it seems I have very little options for building and parking a tiny home in my area. It’s frustrating that zoning laws and municipalities are not open to tiny homes yet from what I’ve read. The system makes it pretty difficult. I don’t want to have to take out a 30 year mortgage and slave away my life. I want the freedom and reduced stress. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

🙁 It’s a huge bummer, Alex, but it’s true that in many places the regulations are not compatible with tiny house living. Particularly not those close to a huge city like NYC.

This is a great design. I have never built a THOW but I AM aware of artificial products that outgas chemicals. Mass market bed mattresses, carpets, furniture and FOAM are among the worst of them. There are many more including commercial paint and most building products. I would suggest that people pay extra and buy natural latex rubber (talay?) for their cushions which is nontoxic and does not outgas.

Like the house and the elevator bed. My only concerns are the time it takes to lower/raise the bed and the noise it makes. Maybe a winch might make a better lift. Also, being that it’s made for an Alaska environment (I’m assuming), I didn’t see any stove or fireplace. Maybe it could be added in the open area?

Too many windows for my tastes because it might be quite expensive if it were triple-paned. Would there be a problem with wildlife possibly breaking the windows while the occupants are asleep?

    • Natalie C. McKee
      March 19, 2017, 5:10 pm

I think there’s electric heat, and windows certainly do add costs. I don’t think animals typically break into windows, but I don’t know 🙂

This is the third time I have watched this video and I am still in AWE of the design elements that she has come up with. I am blown away each time I watch — not to mention the fact that she is just so sweet — I wonder if she realizes how revolutionary some of her ideas really are. She completely solves the problem for people who do not want/or can’t use a loft bedroom and yet still keeps two sleeping areas. Amazing . The two desks, the two ways to use the table for eating, the”pantry”, the hidden laundry room, the closet and so on and so on. Amazing. AND, it is still spacious and cozy at the same time that it has an amazing view……
AWESTRUCK the more I see it.

This is a brilliant house. I didn’t think that she could do better than her triple bunk arrangement, but she did! Only one little improvement I could suggest would be a trap door in the kitchen floor for better access to the storage behind the drawers in the floor under the kitchen, or possibly just making he drawers full length for as often as they’d have to be pulled right out. I had puzzled over the shower/closet thing myself, but her solution is so, so much better than anything I came up with. I just love her work.

Love this tiny house. Being a drafter and having worked for 2 motor home manufacturers, I know how frustrating it can be to have room for maneuvering and yet all the comforts that you need in a limited amount of space. LOVE the elevator bed, but have you thought of utilizing the space under it? I immediately saw in my minds eye this spice rack system, on a much larger scale

    https://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Kitchen-Storage-Handmade-Containers/dp/B00IC6UXUQ/ref=sr_1_73?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1492637454&sr=1-73&keywords=spice+rack

    that could hold these bins

    http://www.homedepot.com/p/IRIS-58-Qt-Split-Lid-Underbed-Storage-Box-in-Clear-100501/300735855

with a split lid opening, or without the lids even.

Just another storage idea for you.

And because I don’t like seat areas that might slip, I thought that if you router a small groove into both sides of the lids on the storage/ottomans and then staple or glue down a small cord to assist with placement and negate slippage, would make the cubes more stable.

    Sincerely, Lela Gallentine

PS, say hi to my cousins up there!

I really enjoyed this great tiny house!! How much to build? Finding all the uses for stools, storage, shelving and slide out cabinet/washer-dryer was the best. Are plans for sale? How much? Good job! Best I have seen for us in our 70’s!

This tiny house has Everything you could possibly ask for! Amazing storage spaces, hide away area for the washer/dryer combo, perfect solutions for clothes storage & protection from the shower. Love the cereal space! And for those of us who don’t want to climb ladders to access the sleeping area, LOVE the elevator bed! The large windows make the living space seem huge. By far this is the Best THOW I’ve seen! Thank you for sharing!

I can only say WOW! This is an amazingly creative design. The elevator bed is brilliant for those of us who don’t want to have to climb a ladder to get into bed. There is a huge amount of hidden storage, and this hidden washer/dryer combo fantastic. Great job!

Is there an exhaust fan in the bathroom to get moisture escape after showering?

You had to have lost a lot of sleep thinking up ideas to save space and look nice, too. I’m most impressed, particularly since you don’t have to climb a ladder or stairs. Very impressive! Love the light in the unit bringing the outdoors inside and all the comforts that one person really needs. Awesome!

LOVE LOVE LOVE this place. I am at the end of what has turned out to be a disastrous tiny house build and needed an idea for how to get a bed in the small space but also be able to have seating, love her sectional idea and would love to have the plans for that. I have figured that to make things work in the space I have I will need the “couch” to be 45″ wide at the longest point so would love to get the plans for that sectional that I can “tweak” to make it work in my space

Nicely done. If I can make two suggestions: you can build a bookshelf under the bed or a small storage if it doesn’t add too much additional weight for the lift; and build a lip around the top of the seat cube so that it locks in place when you flip it over to use as a seat.

Yet another applause for the creativity in making the housework. With the multi-function of so many pieces, I was surprised how relatively easy it was to make the transformations. The only ‘flaw’ I could see was the closet in with the shower. Yes, the curtain will stop water from directly soaking the clothes, but it won’t do anything about steam. You close it all up after a shower and you have a real possibility of mold growing on the clothes.

I was thinking that as well…but wondering if a “door” to seal off that storage closet wouldn’t work? Like some kind of plastic kind of option…
