A City That Embraces Bicycles

The City of Davis has a goal: to create and maintain an integrated system of bicycle infrastructure.

Wouldn’t you like to live in a city where there are more people using their bikes to get around? I wish more neighborhoods were designed this way. This particular city is in California.

In it there are more than 100 miles of bike paths while 17% of residents use bicycles for their main mode of transportation. According to this video, this is more than any other city in the United States.

The city planners began protecting and creating new bike paths since the 1960s. In the video you’ll see what it’s like in Davis, CA while you learn more neat facts about it.

That embrace needs to have a better grip. I see pics of bikes without racks to park in and without security locks either. One way to promote use of bicycles is getting businesses to provide bicycle parking and for riders to use security so that thieves do not lock onto an area and target them for bicycle theft.

Are you fixing to move west Alex? 🙂 We like bikes and tiny houses out here! Davis is a great bike town but the commenter above is right. The census shows Davis has slightly more than one bike per resident but only provides parking for about a quarter of that. It seems crazy but when school is in session its tough to find parking off campus. One thing we loved in Portland after living in Davis was the copious parking and wonderful signage telling you the best routes and distances for bikes. 🙂 cheers!

Hey Logan! Glad you pointed that out. I put this post together a while back but it’s true that I’ve been wanting to experience the west for a while now, specifically Portland. Not sure if it would be a permanent move, but certainly something I want to experience. Andrea’s mentioned interest in it too. Thanks for coming by and talk to you later!

Great to see some parts of the USA going green.
