8×8 Tiny House Design Contest Submission by Mary Parris

This is my design for the 8×8 design contest. I’m thinking a shed design with a contemporary flair and a tin roof. Keep the windows high and on the front wall only. The two side walls would have a 12″ shelf bout 6′ up running from the bath to the kitchen for storage. Baskets or crates could go on these shelves for clothes storage. Depending on your wardrobe, there would also be room for a few nick-nacks and books There should be enough base and wall cabinets in the kitchen for all the kitchen stuff. A couple of hooks on the right side wall for jackets, purse, book bags, etc.

The Murphy bed would be designed where it would raise up as it is lowered, so that the upholstered chair and ottoman could fit under it and the attached desk would lower without having to be folded up.

The bathroom idea is stolen from the motorhome industry. The floor of the 8×8 would be tile with a very slight tilt towards the front of the house. So, to take a shower, you would just need to close off the bathroom area with the wall panels, turn on the water and start singing. The water could drain into a discreetly placed tube at the front wall and down the drain (or holding tank or whatever system you set up.) kind of like drainage tile used in landscaping.

It’d be good for very, very short people as the bad if that is what the brown thing is is only 5′ long at most.

You’d need a smaller main chair or a folding one and very little space left over if the bed was 6’6” standard that is needed to be comfortable.

Another is the 8’6” or so outside dimension would cause a lot of waste or more labor or both when using standard 8′ stock as most do as lowest cost.

Is the contest 64sq’ inside or outside ?

64 square feet would be the overall base you’re building off, but for the sake of simplicity, you could give ideas with an 8′ by 8′ interior space in mind, and not worry about framing widths and space taken from it…..some good ideas Mary- thanks for going above and beyond with the schematics. Aside from the bed length (mentioned above), the front door/facade wall would have to be taller than 8′ though, as a standard door usually takes up 6′ 8″ or more of height and would leave no room, for the clerestory-type windows. Again, some good ideas within though- thanks!

Is the bathroom a fire hazard? I mean if you have a friend over and you are in the bathroom and a fire breaks out, that friend would have to go through 2 locked doors to get out. And since the windows are so high and small that friend might not be able to get out that way.

That’s a great start to making it a neat little house. The Bed is slightly disproportionate in size and would have to be elevated above the standard height of the chairs and table that you’re using when it folds down though. Definitely make for a simple and unique place to go and hang out.

Seems to me that Murphy beds are greatly undervalued. I am considering using one in my 3-bedrm house. Ten months of year guest rm is music rm and computer office. What a waste!

The Murphy bed is a nice touch.

Suitable for a single person with a daybed, 24″ under-counter fridge and wet bath.

For easy access, try 2 carousel cabinets beneath the daybed.

For additional counter space, try a pull-out board above an under-counter fridge and a cutting board that fits over a kitchen sink.

Store stackable pans and a portable stove top beneath a kitchen sink. Store a utensil basket on a window sill. Store dishes vertically on narrow shelving at the end of a counter top.

Use a pull-out board or folding shelf to dine or study.
