Built around a big beautiful Magnolia tree is this 650 sq. ft. modern cottage. Designed by, Lanefab Design/Build, this backyard cottage is L-shaped with a detached garage that helps create a private courtyard around the centerpiece tree.

Inside the modern cottage is a bright spacious kitchen with large windows and a skylight. The living room also has large windows for natural sunlight to come in.  I like the simple bedroom with the built-in shelves. What do you think of this modern cottage design? Please enjoy and share below.

Why can’t they bring this to the USA ????? I love Laneway Homes. The designs they have are Amazing !!!! The one I like is The Laneway West House. It’s a Loft home. I asked Lane House if I could buy the floor plans. No reply.

    • June 22, 2015, 3:38 pm

Hi – The company name is actually Lanefab Design/Build.

      – Kevin, did you send us an email? The West house wasn’t one of our projects, though we have other loft style lane houses that we’ve designed/built.

These homes can be replicated in other cities, though they’re generally tailored to the Vancouver zoning rules, and so we end up having to do things that are more expensive (like sinking it in to the ground).

We can design custom projects for sites anywhere, or you can purchase plans for existing projects such as this one.

This is a very nice design. I like the open, airiness of it. I was puzzled by the bookcase and then remembered
it’s a permanent house, not a house on wheels.

Love the small but compact bathroom — also the excellent storage options in the bedroom. These Laneway houses are really nice — I’m sure they’re not available where I live, but I wonder if one couldn’t get a designer/builder to use these ideas as a template?? (tho probably
waaay more expensive, I guess). Still, a good model to try to replicate.

Where do you find these big windows and the rollout windows?

If by “Roll out” windows you mean the top windows that open UP rather then slide past each other–they are avail at any window or door company and LOWES etc. Some windows are set up like this top and bottom row to draw in and then vent cool or warm air—I like them because you can leave them open in a rain and not get wet! They generally have a “crank out” handle.

they are usually referred to as awning windows.

Nice house, like how bright it is and that it has a garage
Not crazy about crank style windows
Interesting that the bedroom is in the lower level of the house/basement.

    Re: Laneway Houses
Minneapolis, MN has just adopted/changed it’s city ordinances to accommodate Laneway houses, as well as Tiny houses – the only stipulation there is that they need to be on foundations not on trailers.
I’m ecstatic my city is actually making tiny living possible in an urban setting.

That is terrific news about Minneapolis. We have states (cities) across the nation that are making this life style a very real possibility — Colorado, Texas some areas of California now Minnesota that I know of — we need to start compiling a directory with states, towns and listing of requirements for tiny homes on and off trailers. Even Washington allows small homes in unincorporated areas without having to be worried about illegal building.

This is exactly my style. This is amazing and I have fallen in love with this tiny home. Who do I contact about this tiny home?

Live in a 24x24ft home with an 8×8 add on utility room, built in 1957. In rural America many 20x2o’s and up were built after turn of century until 1960’s, brought in by train as kits. Average $100 a month for utilities. Sadly most communities (including mine) have mandated more square footage. These homes would not be allowed today, yet it’s changing, city by city.

I do like this style. I would change a few things like bigger windows, build in the country and no fence around the house and a bigger area outside for leisure time in comfort. It would work in Ar. or any State, city or country living.

Clean and modern with beautiful windows. I really like this design. So glad you could keep the tree!

To me this looks like an older house that has been remodeled, I am sure it must look better that it did some years ago it ; but please for safety sake ,replace those crumbling back yard? semi- circular steps before someone brakes an ankle falling down those. It would improve the look, safety and would not be that expensive of a D-I-Y job. J.C.

Jean, those back steps are not crumbling – look closer. It’s a natural stone stair using what looks like 4 large stones with small rock filler between.

really like the design and that dinning table, if its an original, I want it! the garage is great, because you can keep all your things which you don’t need every day in it.

e.a.f. That dining room table is a 1960’s kitchen table. Likely you can find them in used stores and vintage stores.

Originals in good condition are hard to come by and are usually quite expensive. there is a company who is manufacturing reproductions. The only reason you know they’re “new” is because they are in perfect condition. there is a furniture store in Courtenay, B.C. which sells them. Actually used to have two of them in yellow, I do miss them……
