550 Sq. Ft. Modern Prefab House in Spain

Is it a shipping container converted into a modern small house? Nope, it’s a 550 sq. ft. modern prefabricated house located in Alicante, Spain.

Combining the collaborated efforts of architect, Daniel Martí i Pérez of DMP Arquitectura and designers, Jurgen Van Weereld and Karin Giesberts,  they created and built this house.

They decided to build this prototype prefab house to test their ideas for more sustainable and affordable housing. By using light weight prefabricated panels they help speed up the construction process by not having to use heavy equipment or tons of labor.

To keep cost low they went with a rectangular shaped house which at first I thought it was a shipping container.

In this small space they managed to fit a master bedroom, second room/study, bathroom and kitchen. With of course plenty of outdoor space for hanging out or dining al fresco.

What is clear span? How do you get the cost for your zip?

This is exactly what the world needs right now!

I try to keep my comments positive, but as much as I like this design, having to walk into the bathroom to get to the bedroom seems mighty weird to me. Another pocket door to the bedroom seems pretty easy to do. Otherwise, really nice!

Dennis when i look at the drawing…I see a pocket door from the main
living area as well as one into the master.

Oops sorry Dennis I see the point you were making….I am sure an
        easy rectification.

Look at that beautiful pellet stove! They’re doing it right in Europe and here in the states, we’re stuck with the same design the pioneers had. I WANT A PRETTY PELLET STOVE, TOO!

The problem with pellet stoves is that they do not work without electricity. Have a power failure and you have no heat anymore.

Beautiful design but are they on a cliff?

Very nice. Love how neat and orderly you can keep everything. Seems to be very roomy for a small house. Love the light.

    • May 4, 2015, 6:47 pm

This is NOT as roomy as the floor plan makes it appear, OR the conversion of square footage is incorrect. 550 sq. ft. is about a 23′ square…give or take. This appears to be pretty square. That makes the office 6′ x 9′ (maybe). The master bedroom is MAYBE 9′ x 9′ with a double bed (not queen). The bathroom has GOT to be tiny! (maybe 30″ wide on the shower with a 2′ walkway between that and the vanity).

All of the items shown on the floor plan are not typical sizes, and hallways are definitely SKINNY.

As for the overall design of the place, however, given that it is a Tiny House, and if you think about a TH on a trailer, then if you don’t mind a wall-to-wall bed, then go for it. I would just hate for someone to order one of these things and discover that it is NOT as large as they thought.

A good size, but the storage area behind the kitchen seems like a waste of available space to me – if the kitchen was moved back into the corner, you could easily build a big set of storage cupboards in the other corner. Then the floor space currently lost as passageways would be available for every day living, and would generally make the whole area look bigger. I agree about going through the bathroom to get to the main bedroom, as well – unless they were using the wall area, another pocket door would be a better option at least for me. And more windows in the bedrooms, instead of just an external door? Additional doors and windows would increase cost though… Not sure where the laundry appliances are, either (easily built into the storage cupboard area I guess if this is more than a short term holiday home).

storage is very important for me and the laundry area could be put there too. when you have a house you need some tools, some place to store the cleaning stuff and more. I would go for it.

Need to either add another bath or another door into master bedroom. THEN this will be a great house!

  • March 15, 2015, 7:19 pm

Yes, European architects are on the ball. Love the clean lines and clever placements of the usual needed spaces to make a tiny/small place livable and comfortable.

It IS roomy- 550 instead of the usual 200 sq ft or less for a Tiny Home. Double the cost, then???

It isn’t a tiny house but its small and roomy.
What is missing is some covered to porch to sit outside during the day
because it can be hot in summer there too.
Otherwise perfect if the price would be right.

I like the house but the pellet stove should be moved. It is taking away from counter use, in more ways than one.

This house would be a perfect fit for me in Arizona. Would need to figure a place for a washer and dryer (maybe dryer). And a way to use alternative energy sources such as solar and wind in order to keep utility bills low. That is my goal in living in a tiny home. Living as simple as possible and still be able to keep a job in today’s world. I would like to grow a small garden and live in a small home.

I would use the space where he set up a desk as my laundry room. Agree a second pocket door into the bedroom and move the pellet stove…totally blocks the countertop for an eating surface…otherwise, looks great for a small space.

Me too Dora – that’s my dream. Can’t see it happening in the UK where I live though – lack of space and affordable land. Not sure how this gets addressed. I’m completely hooked on the idea of a tiny home so I have no idea how it’s going to happen!

English translations on floor plans would be most helpful. Same with photos showing whole rooms.

LOVE the double sofas! Whenever I see a small or tiny home with just two chairs or an uncomfortable-looking nook-type seating area, I think “I would never spend more time in that room than I had to.” Sofas are so luxurious, and having room for two is really nice.
    Thanks for this pretty design!

That will work, but squeeze in a half bath, please.

While I don’t like the pellet stove in the center I bet it’s there so it distributes the heat evenly throughout the living spaces.

Europeans would have washer/dryer in the kitchen, much smaller appliances

Pretty much agree with all the comments here. As for heating, I would close radiant in floor heating or a heat pump which puts the bulk of it out of the living space. Had a heat pump in my house in TN and it cut my heating and cooling cost by more than half.

550 sq. ft is still pretty small. Beautiful home; I could easily be comfortable living in this…

  • March 23, 2016, 7:48 pm

I am very interested in plans for tiny houses, especially when it comes to the bathroom… am I correct that this plan doesn’t have a tub or shower? Am I missing something?

    Love the design otherwise!

I’d lose the glass wall in the bathroom. Regardless if you have designated hallways or not–you still have a traffic patterns where people walk for access. Enclose it or not–it’s all the same.
This is essentially a box. Anyone can give you a quote on prefabbing it for you–and shipping it. Choose your finishes–or have them give you a “shopping list” with allowances. For snow country choose a pitched standing seam roof 6/12. This would also give you a vaulted ceiling (maybe with loft storage). Bet you can get what you want for under 50k. Add another 10k for a basement. Easy.

Just convert the metrics. Bid a big commercial building at NASA once–plans & specs all in metric–including mechanicals. What great fun.
Lose glass wall that separates shower–too tight–use folding shower curtain and gain the space. Change swing of back door. Eliminate short wall by back door. Make that area utility/laundry. Enclose wall by bathroom and lose wall that separates bedroom. I would like a folding partition wall that would fold against exterior wall when privacy unnecessary. Extend roof over deck by about 6 feet. Gives you cover, can keep doors open in rain, and doesn’t make room much darker. Keep extending deck out ot about 12 feet so you can sit in some sun when you want. Lose pellet stove–simply no room. Maybe a dual-sided fireplce in middle of front wall? This would also give you a nice exterior fireplace on front porch. Something this small–just superinsulate with fresh air exchanger. Add ceiling fans to reciculate heated air. Add big windows along rear wall for light–and maybe a couple along side walls. This private little area can be used as office, pantry, or a million other things. Maybe half height between kitchen. Lose pocket doors behind kitchen. Put TV somewhere else. That’s a start.
