5 Tiny House Community Websites You Can Explore

As I type this I am sitting at a camping festival in central Illinois. On Thursday, Matt and I presented a workshop on tiny houses and off the grid living.

We had about 50 people attend which is pretty big for any of the workshops here even though attendance for the festival is over 1000 people. We were excited by the number of people at our workshop but it also showed us that there is a genuine interest in this topic from people all over the country and of all walks of life.

Some people were more interested in the tiny house itself and the construction. Some were interested in other types of alternative building. Some were interested in off the grid living and how to make it work in any situation. Everyone was there because they were craving a different kind of life.

Alex here at Tiny House Talk does a really good job of inviting bloggers to share their stories and there are so many more out there. Every time I turn around there are new tiny house blogs showing up and it is so exciting to read their adventures.

We are here to share our experiences and answer questions and maybe inspire someone else to radically change their lives. I’m not saying we become radical Tiny House missionaries but I do think we have a responsibility to make our community as accessible as it can be so people who are seeking this information can reach out to us easily. So I thought I would share some other websites on the movement that I have found helpful for networking.

5 Tiny House Community Sites You Can Explore

  • The Tiny House Map has been making its round for a little while now. It is a great way to know where tiny homes are around you and be able to access the individual builders and home owners in your area to learn more about it.
  • I know you are all familiar with Tiny House Listings, but this website makes me exceptionally happy just by existing. If you’re interested in the tiny life but not in the construction, there may be a small home in your area waiting for just the right owner.
  • If creating a literal tiny house community is what you are interested in, you can check out the information at Tiny House Village Network. I love the idea of using tiny homes to develop a co-housing situation or intentional community and I think a lot of other people are interested in it as well.
  • And of course, there are many resources available at The Small House Society.
  • Also, check out Facebook, Google+ and other social media. There are a number of organizations, networking groups and individuals there who are building tiny homes or simplifying their lives that can be resources for information and connections.

Poem: Tiny Houses on the Rise

This is not a small tide~
Sheds, cottages, shacks, small barns, to shanties are being restored, re-discovered, and adored~
Tiny houses are on the rise.

Like ‘Tiny’ orbits in space, tiny houses do not take up much space~

They can be found on mountain sides, in empty lots, in meadows, behind barns or inside barns, on homesteads, and near the sea shore, in cities, suburbs, rural areas, near rivers, lakes and even in the deserts~

A path of grass and stone, winds through my flowered beds, there’s a spring with pond and fountains that flows down to the garden shed~

For the folks that have not been to Texas Tiny Homes, realize that the livability of a 12′ wide is amazing for just a permit to move or a wide load sign as the difference. If your state allows 8’6 wide for transport on roads, use every inch allowed if you are too timid to go the legal limit with signs/permits. I am into the 400 sq.ft. Park Model size and the $25K ceiling I want to break. But that is just me. In Tiny homes to be inventive is the goal.

Totally off topic or maybe not… I just bought a very cute 288 square Timber frame house that came in two sections and was moved onto a 16×24 Timberframed Daylight Basement. I have been following the Tiny/Small House movement for quite some time and love the storage and interior design ideas that I have come across. But my dilemma is either I can envision using some of these ideas or I am just not talented enough to design the interior of this house and basement living space. Is there help out there or resources that focus on interior design. Kind of feeling stuck….Anyone??

Val — you don’t say where you live but there are a lot of interior design tips on the internet. My favorite spot for lots of stuff is pinterest.com

You have to join to look around but it’s free and they NEVER share your name with anyone. If you search for Tiny House, you will see dozens of ideas — some of them useful and some of them pretty much fantasy — but I bet it gets you started thinking about what you can do with your place.

I don’t live in a tiny home — yet. I live in a little apartment, 1/2 the size of last year’s apartment. And I’m getting ready to make another move to a smaller space. So I am quite interested in how to make the most of what I have and what is to come.

      Hope that helps.

    Hey Mary Sue,

Thanks for the tip. I will definitely check pinterest out. I live in the beautiful kootenays of British Columbia, which is south eastern BC.
I am excited about this new adventure in my life. And good for you that you are taking steps towards a smaller and smaller space. It was funny but since I am going from a 2000 square foot home to an apx 600 sq ft when the basement was poured and I realized just how small the house was going to be I kind of went into shock wondering what have I done. But that is the beauty of re-thinking living space it is a process and I am loving the journey.

thanks again for taking the time to respond

For some reason, the link to join the Tiny House Villages Network is closed. Clicking on it just gets you redirected to the home page, which gives you the link to join, which redirects you (see where I’m going with this, don’t you?). This is exactly the kind of thing many of us would like to explore, so if anyone knows how to access the group, please help us out by publishing a live link. Thanks!

I think Cade Lakes in Caldwell Tx. (has lots of land with few restrictions)could be a great place to start up a tiny house villag. This is what my uncle has out there it’s so neat you can see it at: bvtxweb.com_magnolia_walkup …. Enjoy!
