480 Sq. Ft. Double Decker V House by Nelson Tiny Houses

This is a double-decker V House by Nelson Tiny Houses. And I think it’s my favorite tiny house project yet so I’m extremely excited to be sharing it with you.

Normally the V House offers about 240 sq. ft. of space inside. But this time Nelson has built a double V House for one of their customers making it a total of about 480 sq. ft. of space with this double-decker design/build. And it gets even better because there’s an extra 400 sq. ft. of outdoor deck space too. When you go inside the Double-Decker V House from downstairs you’ll find a kitchen, living area, washer/dryer closet, a half bathroom, and loads of windows! I think you’ll be really impressed with the rest of it too.

Downstairs is the beautiful custom made kitchen that features stainless steel appliances along with an awesome concrete countertop around the sink.

Across the sink is a custom built table made from birch that the folks at Nelson built for their client.

Next to the kitchen there’s a closet which houses a stacking washer/dryer along with a hot water tank.

youtu.be-JApDt6kBov4 (12)

On the other side of the first floor is the studio living area.

youtu.be-JApDt6kBov4 (13)

I say studio because pretty soon there’ll be a murphy bed system that can quickly transform this living space into a second bedroom.

youtu.be-JApDt6kBov4 (14)

Still on the first floor you’ll even find an extra half bathroom! So yes, that’s two toilets in this tiny home.

youtu.be-JApDt6kBov4 (15)

Crawl space access is accessible through the living area in case you’re curious about that.

youtu.be-JApDt6kBov4 (16)

Ready to head upstairs? Great! There are two ways to get there. The first is using a ladder from inside which leads you into a closet that’s upstairs (you’ll see that below too).

youtu.be-JApDt6kBov4 (17)

And the second way is obviously to use the outdoor deck to get up there! I know staircases and ladders aren’t for everyone but I think this is pretty darn cool, how about you?

youtu.be-JApDt6kBov4 (18)

The client even set up her own outdoor bedroom to sleep outside during the summers. That’s awesome!

youtu.be-JApDt6kBov4 (19)

Alright let’s take you inside the second level. You’re going to love it!

youtu.be-JApDt6kBov4 (22)

There’s a cozy sleeping loft with plenty of windows and light.

youtu.be-JApDt6kBov4 (23)

You can access it using this custom built storage staircase. Very simple solution!

youtu.be-JApDt6kBov4 (24)

And thanks to the double decker design, there is plenty of room for storage!

youtu.be-JApDt6kBov4 (25)

The tiny homeowner even has a wonderful spot to create art (she’s an artist).

youtu.be-JApDt6kBov4 (26)

Remember the ladder to closet? Here’s what it looks like!

youtu.be-JApDt6kBov4 (27)

Alright! Let’s take you to the bathroom upstairs.

youtu.be-JApDt6kBov4 (28) youtu.be-JApDt6kBov4 (29)

The high ceilings are super awesome! Makes everything feel more open and spacious.

I realize high ceilings make small spaces look better, but I always felt that those high ceilings came at the cost of lost space… and could b better used. This double-decker is great. Love the bath and a half.

Ok. First let me say that I do NOT hate this double decker house. And I know it was owner driven as far as layout. I love the idea of two floors, however if it were my plan…. the first floor is way too choppy. That washer and dryer closet eats up too much floor space. The way to get upstairs is NOT an option. Having these stacked gives a GREAT opportunity to have a nice set of storage stairs that could double as the laundry facilities. The entry closet up to the second floor is wasted space. I do love all the reclaimed items as well as the windows all around. The deck is EXCELLENT aND adds so mich more “living” area. I’d love to design a double decker myself 😉 ty for sharing

I agree with your opinion of the first floor being way to choppy. I disagree as to the wasted space with the closet entry to the upper floor. you have to have a hole through the floor to accommodate being able to utilize stairs to arrive at the upper floor. Actually I think the closet and ladder situation takes up less space than a more conventional stairway would.

I also had the same question Zachery had as regards exactly what is a “V” house and was going to ask, so thanks for checking into that. I sort of expected is to be a modified inverted A frame of some sort.

My thoughts exactly, Lynette…! Nelson Tiny Houses are built with beautiful craftsmanship that I love, but this one’s layout has lots of wasted space. The stairs with w/d underneath is an excellent observation. The half bath could have been put where the w/d is located. And the closet for the ladder almost seems silly and pointless…railing would have opened up the space, which is so important in tiny housing, noting it could have been completely eliminated with the staircase-w/d-storage under a staircase.
The three steps to the loft on the second floor…lol…I’d love to see how people would attempt that…!
Seems the artist had the say-so in the floor plan…oh, well…each to his/her own. If she’s happy with it…that’s what counts.

Really like Nelson Tiny Houses. If only I wasn’t moving across the continent from them, they’d be on my short list of places to contact when I’m ready to build.

That said, I wish I could get something in Nelson! I know that’s where they filmed Roxanne (Steve Martin, 1986) and I loved that little town on sight. If I could run my biz outside the U.S. I’d sure consider it.

In the meantime, they have terrific ideas, especially for storage in small spaces. This double decker was designed mostly by the owner, I’m guessing, so it’s not really a great example of what NTH can do with regard to that, but love to watch them show us around their projects anyway. 480sf is plenty when it’s well planned. This one wasn’t, so much, but still lots to like about it.

So I am new to tiny houses but I’m not sure what others are criticizing as I love this house. I am an artist as well but I don’t think that is it. I just love the outdoor space and the fact that it is not on a trailer plus all the windows as light is so important to me.
Any chance I could get the plans?

Love the house, hate the deck. It’s like a parasitic lumber pile is scrambling up the flanks of the building.

as a retired designer I will have to come out of retirement to design esthetically and economically affordable T.H. either on trailer or container. I sincerely think the market is there and by the way as a 62 year old with physical limits I think there are many I can potentially help. Thanks for the inspiration….Megan

I thought the first floor was just fine. I would have lined up the two counters across from each other so I could lock into place a sheet of plywood to throw a mattress on top. He is young and spry, climbing stairs from the inside is not a problem and he has the stairs on the outside. I love the gardening. The reason the First Nations survived is that they were farmers. When they do not farm…everything goes down hill. Thanks for sharing

I totally love the setting of this property. This lucky lady…she has achieved her “perfect” home and setting.
I love the deck, it is such a lovely size and has great out door flow. I also really like the rusticness of everything but still incorporating modern conveniences. If I was comissioning a home like this for myself I would have a sail attached to the deck so not to hot in the summer. I would have the kitchen and lounge and possibly a toilet and basin on the top floor, I would then be able to enjoy the views while cooking and can sit out on the deck to eat without having to carry food upstairs. The reason for having a toilet upstairs is if I have visitors they wouldnt need to go into my private space downstairs. I would need to have a built in stair case so I would feel safe travelling between floors. I would then have my bedroom….beautiful bath like this one, shower and toilet down stairs which would be like an ensuite. I would have the washer and dryer in another area in the downstairs floor. I also like the idea of having a canopy outside the doors. If I was an artist and needed a studio I would incorporate that into the bottom floor. Ohh with all this dreaming I now want one myself!

      Thanks for reading.
