This is a guest post by Kelly Patton on her 432 sq. ft. Artist Studio Yurt in Northern California.

This yurt is comfortable rustic living, or as I call it, fancy camping. It is nestled in the woods of Northern California and it is the perfect dwelling for the nature artist and writer that lives here. It was built by the land owner, 15 years ago, I rent it and have lived here for 2 years. Inside you will find a full kitchen with a classic Wedgewood stove, and the very efficient country wood burning stove. Fragrant cedar siding lines the interior and four Low-E windows add natural light. Please enjoy, learn more, and re-share below. Thank you!

One of the enjoyable features of living in a round space is arranging furniture in an unusual way to separate sections of the living area. The living room and lounge are arranged in a semicircle next to the kitchen, as is the studio. A challenge of the round shape is that the kitchen appliances do not fit flush to the wall, that space can be difficult to keep clean.

There is an awesome high water pressure bathhouse under the porch, gray water leads to a fig tree. A little way up the hill, is the outdoor composting toilet. The yurt is built on stilts and the only access to the front door is through the porch. Standing on the manzanita porch gives you a great view of the sunset and hill.

One of the most appealing things about living in a yurt is the feeling of expansiveness in the interior. The yurt‘s diameter is 24ft and is 432 sq. ft. The highest point of the ceiling at the center circular window is 12ft. It also is great for playing records and movie watching with good speakers and you can experience stereo-like sound inside.

It has been inspiring to live in other alternative spaces such as a school bus and a small cabin in the woods. And the yurt is definitely top on my list. Since living in this yurt, I have painted over 10 large oil paintings, wrote and illustrated two books and held band practice. It is a multi-use space, a creative studio and my home.

How much was this yurt? My father worked for moss a tent company and made and set-up yurts but doesn’t know the price and never set one up as a permanent living structure.

Jenna, the article says it was built by someone else 15 years ago, and the artist is renting it. If you’re searching for current prices, I suggest you contact some of the yurt manufacturers via a google search.
Lovely concept and cat, I’m sure it’s inspiring. Thanks to Kelly for sharing with us. It looks very comfortable.

Yurts may not always be as cute as other Tiny Houses on the outside but they are definitely cheaper and larger than other Tiny houses…:)
Just make sure to compare the prices and packages of the Yurt companies selling in the U.S.

Are cats a necessity to manage rodents invasion in this kind of shelter?
    Otherwise, I like it!

Some people think pets are necessary to turn a house into a home! 😀

    Hi Andrea,

What a wonderful yurt this is. Very homey and spacious. Last year I also shifted to yurt living (well, for vacation purposes). I’ve found https://www.simpleterra.com/yurt-kits/, made customized yurts from bamboo, aluminum and 3-layer insulation. It’s spacious and great. Do check out some of their designs.
